When looking at the map ( go to site ) notice where the red 300 microsieverts/hr areas are ... Some are CLOSE BY the Ocean ! Are those Discharging radioative waters at 300 Micros/hr ???

And if they send a car around to take only Liniar measurements ( along the roads ) than Why didn't they send a Flying Drone to take more 3-D measuraments and a Boat in the waters facing the plant ?? I would ! Wouldn't you ?

Radiation Levels Inside #Fukushima I Nuke Plant Compound Exceed 300 Microsieverts/Hr in Some Locations


TEPCO did the survey of the air radiation levels within the plant compound on May 9, 2012, using the GPS system for the first time.

Unbelievable as it is, that's what the company says in the June 2012 report for the Working Group for the Decommissioning of Reactors 1 through 4 at Fukushima I Nuke Plant. TEPCO's Space-Age Decon Tool Can Visualize Nuclide, Direction and Intensity of Radiation


Finally there's something sort of "high-tech" about the whole "decontamination" business which has boasted screw drivers, brooms and blue tarp as effective decon tools outside Fukushima I Nuke Plant, and vacuuming and strip-painting inside the plant compound.

One of the "high-tech" items is GPS used to map the contaminated areas (see my previous post), and the other is a Compton camera developed by Japan's space agency.

TEPCO has been doing the GPS survey assisting the government research institutions OUTSIDE the plant to identify the radiation contamination. Examples of the survey were announced at the press conference on June 15, 2012.

Browsing through the press handout on June 15 titled "Developing Technology on Monitoring Radioactive Materials and Decontamination", I found a very interesting picture taken by a "super-wide angle Compton Camera" developed by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).

According to TEPCO's explanation (page 5 of the handout),


The utilization of the Compton camera experimentally produced by JAXA for decontamination is currently under consideration (JAEA and TEPCO).

A “super-wide angle Compton camera” allows to visualize radioactive materials such as cesium-134 and cesium-137 by identifying the nuclide, direction and intensity of radioactive materials excluding the air dose rate of the environment (See below) .... go to site for amazing radiation visualization :

UK's Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station in Automatic Shutdown, Cause Unknown

Sizewell B nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast has had its second automatic shutdown in four months. Owner EDF Energy said electricity production had ceased at 17:11 BST on Wednesday and it was investigating the cause of the stoppage.

A spokesman said: "The reactor was safely shut down, with the plant responding as expected and at no time was anyone's safety at risk." The plant had an 11-day automatic stoppage in March.

The 865-megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactor's trip was caused by an elevated high-steam generator level after it was restarted at 1930 GMT on Wednesday, it added.

The reactor was previously shut a month ago due to oil leakage from a transformer, and was expected to be back in full operation after maintenance by Thursday evening.

Government Commission's Final Report on #Fukushima Nuke Accident Blames Government, Experts, TEPCO


The investigation commission on the Fukushima accident set up by the Cabinet Office of the government has just issued its final report.

You can download your own copy from this page, but the main report in English has to wait.

This commission conducted the investigation and carried out interviews with people involved since the start of the nuclear accident in March last year in private, unlike the National Diet commission who also released its final report recently.

Some have criticized the government commission for not making its sessions open to public.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing. The National Diet commission should be applauded for its openness and its highly critical final report (anyone reading?), but in some of the public testimonies of the commission that I watched it was rather a place for the expert commissioners to display (or show off) their expertise and knowledge of the nuclear issues in general... more ...

Now They Tell Us: Ministry of Education Says Strontium-90 of #Fukushima Origin Found in 10 Prefectures


It took about 15 to 16 months for the Ministry of Education and Science or MEXT (the very name is a joke at this point) to announce radioactive strontium (Sr-90) was widely dispersed from the broken reactors at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant last year in 10 prefectures in Kanto and Tohoku, to the levels last seen in the Chernobyl accident.

Caveat is that it excludes Fukushima and Miyagi, probably the two most contaminated with radioactive fallout from the Fukushima accident. MEXT's excuse is that the stations in these prefectures have been damaged by the earthquake/tsunami.

From the press release by Ministry of Education and Science on July 24, 2012, "Analysis of Strontium-90 in the monthly environmental radioactivity levels (fallout)" (in Japanese; labels added by me) , I wonder what the levels would be if Fukushima and Miyagi's data were to be added . Radioactive strontium from Fukushima disaster found in 10 prefectures


Radioactive strontium-90 from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant has been detected for the first time in 10 prefectures outside Miyagi and Fukushima, the science ministry said July 24.

The highest reading was in Ibaraki Prefecture and nearly matched the maximum level of strontium-90 recorded in Japan following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The nine other prefectures are Iwate, Akita, Yamagata, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa.

But experts say the current levels of strontium-90 will have little impact on health.

"The health impact of the strontium will be much smaller than that of cesium," said Takumaro Momose, deputy head of the Radiation Protection Department at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

"There is no need to worry as long as we keep track of radiation doses derived from cesium. There is no problem about food, either, as long as the cesium content remains within the safety standard."

The latest measurements were part of the science ministry's release of data on the concentrations of strontium-90 in monthly dust deposits collected in outdoor receptacles at measurement stations in all 47 prefectures between April 2010 and December 2011.

Data was unavailable for Miyagi Prefecture because the tsunami that triggered the nuclear accident on March 11 last year also destroyed the measurement station. In Fukushima Prefecture, the ministry’s analysis was obstructed because the measurement station is located within the no-entry zone around the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.

The science ministry said soil samples taken in June last year already detected strontium attributable to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in the two prefectures.

The ministry said the strontium found in the 10 other prefectures came from the Fukushima plant because the measurements exceeded the pre-disaster maximum of 0.30 becquerel per square meter and rose in March or April last year following the onset of the accident.

According to the ministry’s measurements, a maximum concentration of 6.0 becquerels of strontium-90 per square meter was recorded in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, in March 2011. That is 20 times the 0.30 becquerel per square meter observed in Hokkaido in February 2006, the highest measurement taken in Japan between April 2000 and February 2011 ... more on site ...

Canadian Magazine Worries About Radioactive Fish


The Georgia Straight is a weekly entertainment magazine in Vancouver, Canada. Its July 19 issue's front cover features salmon with three eyes, setting off an alarm on the geiger counter that's going overscale.

The article titled "Post-Fukushima, Japan's irradiated fish worry B.C. experts" is in that issue:


Are fish from the Pacific Ocean and Japanese coastal and inland waters safe to eat 16 months after the Fukushima nuclear disaster?

Governments and many scientists say they are. But the largest collection of data on radiation in Japanese fish tells a very different story.

In June, 56 percent of Japanese fish catches tested by the Japanese government were contaminated with ce-sium-137 and -134. (Both are human-made radioactive isotopes—produced through nuclear fission—of the element cesium.)

And 9.3 percent of the catches exceeded Japan’s official ceiling for cesium, which is 100 becquerels per kilogram (Bq/kg). (A becquerel is a unit of radioactivity equal to one nuclear disintegration per second.)

#Fukushima I Nuke Plant "Roadmap" Monthly Progress Report (1): Workers Picking Up Radioactive Debris for Future Testing, Getting 0.3 Millisievert for 1-Hour Work


Hardly anyone seems to pay serious attention to Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant itself these days, except occasional, perfunctory mentions of how radioactive materials are still spewing from the reactors and how the groundwater is being contaminated because the basements are leaking (almost always without citing the actual numbers).

All the talk about imminent collapse of Reactor 4 has all but died down, and no sensational stories about the plant are circulating on Japanese Twitter.

So what is TEPCO, now officially the government company with the capital infusion of 1 trillion yen (US$12.8 billion), doing these days at the plant?

Very prosaic, mundane jobs like picking up concrete debris to save for later testing, trying to unclog the pipe to insert a thermocouple, hosing down the fuel assembly. They have been also building the multi-nuclide absorption towers (Toshiba), trying to replace Kanaflex hose for the transport of contaminated water, trying to clean the subdrain pit water, and asking workers from affiliate companies how they are doing.

This post is the first installment from the monthly report, about the workers picking bits of concrete rubble near the blown-up reactors at Fukushima I Nuke Plant. In the report, it is the last item, but it stuck with me as I browsed through the report yesterday while listening to the press conference given by Naoto Kan and his "Zero Nuke" group of politicians.

The workers got 0.3 millisievert radiation exposure for one-hour work of picking up concrete bits, and the concrete bits are not very "radioactive" in Fuku-I standard (it would be considered extremely high outside the plant), at 2,000 microsieverts/hour (or 2 millisieverts/hour).... m uch more on site .....

Fukushima butterflies affected by radiation


Radioactive exposure might have caused mutations in butterflies found in Fukushima, where nuclear meltdowns happened after Japan’s 2011 tsunami and earthquake.


According to a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, Japanese researchers observed an increase in leg, antennae and wing shape mutations among butterflies collected after the Fukushima accident.

The team confirmed the link between the mutations and the radioactive material by laboratory experiments.

"It has been believed that insects are very resistant to radiation," lead researcher Joji Otaki of the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, told the state-funded BBC.

"In that sense, our results were unexpected," he added.

The Japanese team collected 144 adult pale grass blue (Zizeeria maha) butterflies from 10 locations in Japan two months after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in March 2011.

The adult butterflies would have been overwintering as larvae at the time of the accident.


By comparing mutations found on the butterflies collected from the different sites, scientists found that areas with greater amounts of environment radiation were home to butterflies with much smaller wings and irregularly developed eyes .... more on site ....

#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: Highly Contaminated Water From Reactor 3 Leaked in Reactor 4 Turbine Building


It's been about 14 months since the hastily rigged system of transporting and treating the contaminated water and circulating the treated water back into the Reactor Pressure Vessels (1, 2 and 3) to cool the melted fuel somehow. The pipes used were Kanaflex pipes, which TEPCO just started to replace with rigid pipes.

But the company didn't replace the Kanaflex pipe that goes from the Reactor 3 turbine building basement through the Reactor 4 turbine building first floor in front of the room with electrical power panels on the way to the building that stores the highly contaminated water before the water gets treated by SARRY. That's what leaked, and the water got inside the electrical power panel room.

The water, coming out of the basement of Reactor 3's turbine building, has 85,000 becquerels/cubic centimeter of radioactive cesium, as of August 9, 2012 at 3:20PM, according to the company's handout for the press on August 13, 2012. One order of magnitude more cesium than in the water in the Reactor 4 turbine building basement.

There is no information of air radiation levels inside the electrical power panel room. How are they going to clean this up, I have no idea. It is not like the past leaks where at least "treated" water leaked.

If they cannot clean up the room, and if anything happens to the power panel, they may have some serious problem ... more on site ....

High levels of cesium found in fish caught off Fukushima

A record high concentration of cesium – 258 times the normal level - has been detected in fish caught off the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), reports.
Rock trout caught in the 20-km area around the Fukushima plant measured 25,800 becquerels per one kg, while 100 becquerels is the norm .... more ....

At a gathering of politicians from prefectural and municipal governments in Japan, the veterinarian head of a non-profit organization called "Ecosystem Conservation Society of Japan" told the audience, quite off-handedly,

People in Fukushima, Tochigi, Saitama, Tokyo, Kanagawa where the radioactive plume went by, should not marry because the deformity rate of their offspring will skyrocket.

Than remember that radiation is still coming out of Fukushima while the Japanese are going nowhere , an increasingly radioactive seating ducks as probably the above veterinarian sees it ...

KYOTO — The risk of a fire starting in reactor 4's spent-fuel pool at the Fukushima No. 1 plant continues to alarm scientists and government officials around the world, prompting a leading U.S. nuclear expert to urge Japan to tap global expertise to avert a catastrophe.



Go global: U.S. nuclear expert and opponent Arnie Gundersen addresses an audience Monday in Kyoto, after traveling to Japan to meet with Diet members and citizens' groups over conditions at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant. MICAH GAMPEL


Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear engineer and former executive in the nuclear power industry who is now one of its foremost critics in the United States, has been monitoring the No. 1 plant since the March 2011 triple meltdowns through his Vermont-based Fairewinds Energy Education nonprofit organization ....

" In 1997, the laboratory did a study showing that if a nuclear-fuel pool were to boil dry, it would release enough radiation to cause the permanent evacuation of those living within an 80 km radius (of the complex).

" The Fukushima plant's reactor 4 (pool) has 1,500 fuel BUNDLES . That's more cesium than was released into the atmosphere from all of the nuclear bombs ever exploded, (which total) more than 700 over a period of 30 years. That's also why the U.S. recommended an evacuation with an 80 km radius," Gundersen explained.

But even today, concerns persist among experts worldwide that reactor 4's pool is still at risk of boiling dry. If this were to occur, it would necessitate a massive and immediate evacuation of the surrounding area.

Nuclear fuel rods are extremely thin and clad with zircaloy, a zirconium alloy that contains a tiny amount of tin and other metals. But zircaloy burns if it is exposed to air, as shown in a test conducted at the Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico just two weeks before the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated the Tohoku region .... more ....

WHO would build it on the Third floor ( instead of burried into the ground ) so in case an earthquake cracks the concrete the whole cooling water will drain in a flash while the crack itself will be very hard to patch .

Now open a strong drink and Seat Down for this , ya , you don't hear me say this often but this is beyond a polite warning , take a look at this ' brilliant ' piece of engeenering that is threatening now the human kind welbeing ( the I steel bar slides into the pool at the end of the video , hope the Japanese guy was wearing diapers when it happened :) , oh ya , DO notice the total absence of a roof - which now rests on the bottom of the pool - and the overall Ruin-like aspect of the building - that's when the strong drink comes in , and Ya , they have to pump water in there yet observe the Absence of Ripples on the water surface :

In the video below, released by TEPCO on September 24, 2012, the accident happens toward the end, at about 3:30.

The crane grabber couldn't get a good grip on a relatively small piece of metal right on the edge of the pool, and the metal piece slid into the pool with a small splash.

... Following up this article... You can’t work longer than 30 mins in reactor 1 because of too much radiation .


The detailed data of the endoscope operation [LINK] was published.

The dose meter indicated 10.3 Sv/h near the surface of flooded water, which is 10 times higher than the radiation level measured in the basement floor of reactor2 and 3.

However, when they put the dosemeter deeper than 2m in water, it indicated 100,000~1,000,000 Sv/h and it stopped decreasing though it was lifted up. Tepco states the dosemeter went out of order.

... the canotations are deep : considering the thousands of half-years of the radioactive materials on their high-density population soil , it meant the Politicians didn't care about the future of Japan , it will roll into the Pacific anyways . Or the waste will be sold as Nuclear Weapon grade material ...

But what about the nuclear reactors , they ' thought ' ?
Those will roll into the Pacific as well so why not build them right on the ocean shore !
So when the Big One hits it will burry the F***ers into the ocean and literarly wash-you-hands of the radioactive problem including Storage of radioactive waste ! Now that's Creative Engineering ! Kudos !

Japanese Net Citizens' (Anecdotal) Response to TEPCO with No Money to Buy Batteries and No Permit to Transport Batteries : " TEPCO Should Have Used Credit , and We Need New Emergency Laws and Regulations "


" One month after it was first reported by Asahi Shinbun, some Japanese net citizens on Twitter seem to be slowly realizing what happened on March 13, 2011 when Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant workers didn't have enough money to buy car batteries which would have given them a good fighting chance.

Sadly, their response to this revelation indicates to me the same thing would happen again and again ." ...
