#Radioactive Japan: US High School Students Did Visit Fukushima, on "Strengthen Kizuna" Project

A Japanese independent journalist posted this photo on his tweet. It is an air dose measurement of 0.54 microsievert/hour in front of a junior high school in a village in Fukushima Prefecture, and the village name is Tenei-mura ...

.... Well that village was one of the locations where the high school students from the US were sent, as part of the "Kizuna" project by the Japanese and the US government to show support and solidarity with the "victims" of the disaster and to spread the correct information about recovery and decontamination effort by the Japanese government by having young people from the US visit Fukushima.

Remember those high school students, who followed the footsteps of the students from Middle Tennessee State University?

The original meaning of 'Kizuna' is "a tie that binds a domestic animal so that it can't escape" ... "

Cesium above new limit in Miyagi beef

Meat from a cow shipped by a farmer in Tome was found to contain more than 150 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram, the Miyagi Prefectural Government said Wednesday.

The stricter limit of 150 becquerels for beef and rice took effect Oct. 1. The previous limit was 500 becquerels per kilogram.

It is the first time beef with radioactive cesium levels above the tightened limit has been found ..." .

Let me state here for the record that only in the last two month I started seeing readings above fifty CPM on a Daily Bases . I know because before I was startled to see a sensor at 50 CPM , but now there is at least one most of the time , if not more sensors .
Further , those higher readings now approach an average of sixty CPM which means I see often sixty-some and seventy CPM .

But we still seat with our finger up our ass , no ?

#Radioactive Fish off Northeast Japan: Charts of Radioactivity of Bottom-Dwelling Fish Don't Show Much Downtrend (Halibut)


These charts are made by one of people I follow on Twitter, Kontan_Bigcat, who seems to have been very meticulously following the published data (both official and private, like NPOs) on radioactivity in Japan and been producing excellent charts visualizing the data.

From his updated togetter on radioactivity in bottom-dwelling fish in northern Japan on the Pacific Ocean side, charts and his comments (I added some English labels):

Halibut, north of Miyagi (Miyagi, Iwate, Aomori, Hokkaido), up to 9/30/2012 data: 20 to 40 Bq/kg in Sendai Bay (Miyagi), no discernible downtrend in radioactivity. Aomori is seeing an increase, from 5 Bq/kg at most in spring but 20 Bq/kg since summer : .... see charts ....

Now the biggest risk of Japan is reactor4. However, we are only supposed to be worried about an “earthquake” to seriously damage the SFP of reactor4. Is this true ? No, it is not enough. According to Mr. Murata, former Japanese ambassador in Switzerland, the coolant system of SFP of reactor4 was stopped from 12/8 to 12/11, and the concrete base is terribly damaged already.

Knowing this trouble, mass media did not report it at all. On 12/11/2012, Mr. Iwakami Yasumi, Japanese journalist received this email from Mr. Murata. ....

threshold in which the hydrated-water molecule bond begins breaking [17].
Sakr and EL-Hakim [30]
studied the effects of temperature on heavyweight concrete; temperature of 100°C starts decreasing the
strength of the concrete.

Furthermore, if the temperature increases beyond 500°C the strength drops sharply [18].

Sakr and EL-Hakim [18] also noted that magnetite and silica fume have high residual
compressive strength after high temperature exposures. Based on the information presented above, the
high temperatures are very detrimental to concrete. However, the concrete in the biological shield
suffered from the breaking of the hydrated-water molecule and decrease in strength as depicted above.

El-Sayed Abdo and Amin [17] conducted a study that dealt with the temperatures caused by slow
(thermal) neutrons of the order of 109 neutrons/cm2 and their effects on concrete and found that the heat
generation by thermal neutrons occurs in the first layer of the concrete (10 – 50cm) with values of 0.2
mW/ cm3 (rise of 1.7°C) and 6.6E-3 mW/ cm3 (rise of 0.125 °C), respectively.
As denoted by the latter, the heat generated by the thermal neutrons is quite insignificant in comparison to the temperature generated by the reactor vessel as a whole ....

The Counts Per Minute ( CPM ) math and the size of the radiation Sensor :

An average-small human body has some one square meter surface ( skin ) and it receives radiation from all sides .

An average radiation Sensor has a measuring surface of one centimetre square .

There are 100 X 100 = 10,000 centimetres square in one meter square such a small human body .

If such a sensor would read a 30 CPM it would actually mean that the entire human body took 30 X 10,000 centimetres square ( sensors ) = 300,000 CPM !!

Ya , EVERY MINUTE ( for a sensor of one centimetre square )... add on top the Fukushima contribution ...

MOX nuclear fuel shipment leaves France for Japan

CHERBOURG, France -- MOX nuclear fuel bound for the Takahama Nuclear Power Plant in Fukui Prefecture was loaded onto a special cargo ship here on the morning of April 17 .

MOX fuel, or a mix of plutonium and uranium nuclear fuel, is derived from reprocessed spent uranium fuel rods, and is intended to be burned in standard or specially designed "pluthermal" reactors.

On the morning of April 17, three 6-meter-long cylindrical containers of MOX fuel -- produced by French nuclear technology firm Areva -- were lifted one at a time off the pier and lowered into the hold of the U.K.-registered vessel Pacific Egret .
