Korean Airlines flight 777 makes landing in Comox BC after "threat"
Just saw on CTV news that flight 777 landed at CFB Comox after a possible "threat" on board. The flight was in the air for approx. 3 hours before being diverted back to Comox via a F-15 fighter jet escort. No one has been allowed off the plane or onto the plane but the explosives detonation unit is on site from the Airforce.

Re: Korean Airlines flight 777 makes landing in Comox BC after "threat"
There is an unconfirmed report that a Korean Air flight was diverted to and landed in Comox because of a possible threat on board.

The report said the Korean Air Boeing 777 had a fighter-jet escort and was being forced down at Comox after being diverted from Vancouver International Airport.

There are reportedly 149 people on board. The flight appears to have left Vancouver Airport at 2:34 p.m. headed for Seoul, South Korea, and was diverted and landed in Comox at 5:35 p.m., according to Korean Air’s website.

The duty manager at the Comox Valley Airport told the Times Colonist he didn’t know what was going on. “It’s not a scheduled flight, that’s all I know.”

I hope, Canada doesn't get drawn into the North Korean mess in the middle east, more than what it already is, because of this.... set up?

Re: Korean Airlines flight 777 makes landing in Comox BC after "threat"
What I want to know is why would they scramble American fighter jets from Oregon as Standard Operating Procedure to deal with a threat in Canadian airspace? Surely Canadians have perfectly capable assets to deal with these sorts of incidents. Or is this a new wrinkle in that secret border- security-perimeter-agreement-thingy that our governments signed but which no-one is willing to discuss the contents thereof?

Because The US and Canada have this thing known as NORAD...the North American Aerospace Defense command (formerly known as the North American Air Defense Command). It's been around since the early days of the Cold War, when the threat of Soviet nuclear missles was very real.

NORAD - a joint U.S.-Canadian air force command responsible for detecting aircraft and space vehicles deemed a threat to the continental airspace.

Yes of course I know but the question is why were the F15's from Oregon scrambled instead of fighters from CFB Comox? Look at a map. I guess maybe it depends on where the call came in and where the plane was initially intercepted. Of course if it had been in the far north rather than so close to the border they might not have been so jumpy.

Yes.

Essentially, Canada is no more a sovereign nation.

Only by name.

Next thing to occur is hockey will now be played on wooden floors, and the puck will now be declared a sphere and shot at nets suspended by hoops about 8' from the ground.

Oh, sorry. I believe the flight originated in Vancouver, BC. Oregon NORAD assets would have been closest. And, that may have been the on-call unit for the NW Air Defense Sector at the time.

The incident comes at a time of heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula.

South Koreans voted in parliamentary elections on Wednesday, overshadowed by a North Korean rocket launch, as the ruling conservatives sought to overcome allegations of sleaze and growing discontent over the power of big business.

Opinion polls indicate that the conservatives and the left-wing opposition parties are in a dead heat in the election that serves as a curtain-raiser for the more important presidential vote in December.

We have joint agreements.

Both forces were launched.

Comox is a well equipped air-force base on the island.

It was FULLY covered.
