NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Royal Dutch Shell says a sheen of oil, 10 square miles in size, has been spotted in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell said late Wednesday that it reported the sheen to the National Response Center.

The sheen is one mile wide and ten miles long and is located in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, between the Mars and Ursa drilling platforms, said Shell. The platforms are both located 130 miles southeast of New Orleans.

Shell shares down 5 percent in London
HOUSTON/LONDON, April 12

- Shares in Royal Dutch Shell fell on Thursday as the company stepped up efforts to monitor an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, in a market still jittery after BP's 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Shell has sent a spill response vessel to the area and is seeking aircraft to monitor an oil sheen - a layer of oil floating on the sea - near its platforms in the central Gulf of Mexico, it said in a statement on Thursday.

Shell shares fell 5 percent in London, while the U.S.-listed shares were down 3.6 percent in pre-market trade. News of the sheen comes almost exactly two years after BP's deep sea Macondo well disaster that saw nearly 5 million barrels of oil escaping into the Gulf of Mexico, rocking BP's reputation.

130 miles does not put this in the "middle of the Gulf of Mexico." That's extreme northern Gulf of Mexico, something like 150-200 miles south of Mobile/Pensacola.

So, more like 130 South-Southeast of New Orleans. Still extreme northern Gulf of Mexico. A little west of where I posted earlier.
