Many were saying radiation can't be that bad if those plants survive in it. As you can see now, they're dead. Sol Dominvs Imperi Romani Imperium Romanum Sacrum In Varietate Concordia |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 14303964 United States 04/13/2012 04:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do you remember during the months after the nuclear disaster many people were looking at the TEPCO webcam and saying... "look at those plants and trees close to the reactors. They're doing fine, don't seem affected by radiation." Quoting: Vlad Tepes Well take a look at them now: [link to www.tepco.co.jp] DEAD Don't forget that the whole area was exposed to extensive foot and vehicle traffic, not to mention ruptured fuel and chemical tanks. And firefighting chemicals. And who knows what other chemicals in their efforts to make the area less radioactive. And the area was likely inundated by saltwater from the tsunami. It's no wonder the vegetation is doing crappy. It's even possible they killed it off themselves to keep the ground-cover down so that the area is more navigable. Kind of a small sample area to judge the health of the local flora and fauna. |

I used to see a racoon there as well, and lots of birds, in the 30 mins I've been watching now, nothing. Plus there could well be a nasty event today. Not around the vegetation shown in this webcam, that's for sure. There has been no ground activity in that area. Sol Dominvs Imperi Romani Imperium Romanum Sacrum In Varietate Concordia |

I'm not quite sure how comparable they are. Chernobyl=Concentrated, Fukushima=? Chernobyl was on fire, which released actual radioactive fuel particles and ash into the environment which is insanely radioactive, while Fukushima had the hydrogen explosions that released radiation into the atmosphere but not the actual fuel itself. Then there's all of the irradiated seawater used to cool the fuel that leaked into the basement, but just how radioactive was/is that water? To tell if those plants received a lethal dose of radiation is difficult to say, without knowing the radioactivity of the stuff that was released. |
