Expert warns of another quake in the Andaman region

Posted on April 13, 2012

April 13, 2012 – NICOBAR ISL – A fierce earthquake from the Nicobar Islands could strike over Songkran, sending a tsunami crashing into the Andaman Coast, an expert warned yesterday after finding that the 8.6 magnitude Sumatran tremor three days ago was exceptionally deep. “Whenever there is a quake rooted in the [Earth's] mantle, a following quake will be likely in the next few days,” said Professor Thanawat Jaruphongsakul, a senior seismologist at Chulalongkorn University. Fear of another devastating tsunami panicked Thailand and Southeast Asia on Wednesday.

Aceh Earthquake Surprises Scientists
April 12, 2012

The massive earthquake off Indonesia surprised scientists: Usually this type of jolt isn’t this powerful. The biggest earthquakes tend to occur in subduction zones where one plate of the Earth’s crust dives under another. This grind produced the 2004 magnitude-9.1 Indian Ocean disaster and the magnitude-9 Japan quake last year.

Wednesday’s magnitude-8.6 occurred along a strike-slip fault line similar to California’s San Andreas Fault. Scientists say it’s rare for strike-slip quakes, in which blocks of rocks slide horizontally past each other, to be this large.

“It’s clearly a bit of an odd duck,” said seismologist Susan Hough of the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena, Calif.

As one of the world’s most seismically active places, Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Pressure builds up in the rocks over time and is eventually released in an earthquake.

Wednesday’s quake was followed by a magnitude-8.2 aftershock. Both were strike-slip quakes.

“A week ago, we wouldn’t have thought we could have a strike-slip earthquake of this size. This is very, very large,” said Kevin Furlong, a professor of geosciences at Penn State University.

THIS week's earthquakes off the coast of northern Sumatra did nothing to reduce the risk of the much-feared big one - a gigantic quake and tsunami that could devastate the city of Padang further south.

Seismologists predict it could occur at any time, due to a build up of stress under the island of Siberut that has not been relieved for more than 200 years.

John McCloskey, from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, said the 1 million inhabitants of Padang would receive very little warning. ''There will be very strong shaking and 30 minutes later, the wave arrives,'' Professor McCLoskey said.
