Stephen Wolf thinks something strange is happening underground in eastern Shasta County and it is draining water wells and maybe even causing sinkholes and subsiding pavement.

A retired marine geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Wolf said he has seen what is happening in eastern Shasta County before. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, water well levels in the area of the quake fell significantly, he said.

Following the 6.9 magnitude quake in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Wolf wrote a paper for the USGS about the effects the quake had on surface and groundwater.

"The correlation is there. The behavior is identical," said Wolf, who has lived in the tiny eastern Shasta County community of Cassel since 2001.

I am sure that they have had dry winters there before, but then what do I know? I am not even in your country, although given everything that is happening if I were, it certainly would give me pause for thought.

It does give me pause for thought, a lot of us in the northwest are experiencing really weird weather patterns. Our winter never really got started, so I am open to a lot of explanations on that.

Being the quaktard I am, I watched the swarms, just as I'm watching the Indio California activity. It most likely is quake related but the lack of rainfalls has to be accounted for first.

We had a bad drought 2007-2009, which may have something to do with the disappearing water currently, but IMO this winter hasn't been dry enough to cause such a drastic change.

I think the most important info contained in the entire article was overlooked, the known data posted for radius of water wells affected by magnitude is very revealing.

Now we have indicators that USGS stands behind, has accepted and doesn't deny. We now can use these indicators across vast phenomena like " mysterious booms " or rumblings, to see if well levels within known reports are changing.

Usgs has given up an Ace card.

also, we may have had a dry winter but, we had mad snow pack, does that count for anything in shasta?
