I don't think the cost would be more than flower beds with plants that are NOT edible. Flower beds would take more work than a forest of fruit, nut and berry trees with some fruit bearing shrubs mixed in. |

Actually, this will probably be more cost effective in the long run, than planting and maintaining flower beds.. this will be somewhat selfsustaining given a few years of growth. Plus, It looks beautiful and provides food for any one wanting to pick it for themselves..not to mention the wildlife..in the park. So I'd say, it was a very SMART person who thought of this..mmm...probably a woman's idea. |

They mention nothing in there about existing parks with fruit trees already there. Carkeek was a homestead originally. After some volunteers cleared out the black berries they found apple, pear, and plum trees. Some of the apples taste like they already have cinnomon in them. There are other parks around town with lot's of fruit trees and berry bushes. I hope they plant salal and kinikinik. Those are native plants and their berries are edible. |

[link to www.heathcote.org] Yes, here in Winnipeg, we see a lot of people cutting down the fruit trees on their yards, because it creates work when the fruit is ripe.. and a major clean up, if they just let the fruit fall.. Too bad.. It'll take me a few years to get our edibles mature enough to enjoy.. and they have the mature plants and cut em down. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13204508 Pesky homeless how dare they eat That is the idea! Let everyone eat! They will be a lot healthier if they eat from a forest like this, than they will be rooting through garbage.. getting sick and in the end costing you in health care. So it's a win, win.. for everyone.. less cost to you for feeding and keeping the homeless healthy, the homeless enjoy some dignity, and you can eat there as well. |

Most suburbanites are too lazy to forage anyway. Good news for once. Wish they would do that in the Peg. I would love to have fruit trees in my yard. Already have strawberries, blueberries and a mini veggie garden, all on a really small west end lot.
