Then apply the best minds in Japan and the US to inventing one asap! Or get permission to set off a small nuke to incinerate the Fukushima site.

Either way it's better to do something than to carp from the sidelines. If the Yanks spent less time whinging at their TVs and more time holding their elected officials to account, the world wouldn't be in the sorry state it is now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9673535

been screaming that one out for almost a year..... the leaders of this world are sick, repugnant and deaf.... really proves that the rich are only worried about their own opulent lifestyles during their own selfish lifespans... .and that for the most part.... the rest of the gullible public are people to pay tax for their lifestyles...... forget about the children of today and tomorrow, whilst you can get your cocaine hit today.....
 Quoting: citizenperth

At least this guy YOUR government done? Maybe now, we'll get some people moving on this. I for one, am extremely thankful that our gov't is at least doing something!

"I for one, am extremely thankful that our gov't is at least doing something!"

yep, raising their profile, there's an election coming up in november after all

truth is, some people tried to awaken people to the dangers of worst case scenario accidents back in the early days. they were right. they're not the type of people to say i told you so.

your government and everyone elses government is doing exactly what is expected of them, talking politics while people die.

i can't quite manage a round of applause for that.or any cheerleading.

you were told. decades ago.

read it and wept
for the innocent
the children
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14517099

I don't think this is about an election winor politics, those same governments will also be affected if TSHTF ( again - reactor 4 and the approx. 7000 fuel rods...).

We all need to work together on this one, as AC is right... for the planet and for humanity's sake, we need to WIN this one, until the next potentially mand made cataclysmic event.

Maybe they were right, the 6th mass global extinction will be caused not by nature, but by that which it has tenderly nurtured, namely MAN himself.

the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance.”

wow my senator being honest?!
 Quoting: miked

He's an Oregon Senator, right? He doesn't want his state irradiated. Just on the other side of the Pacific, which isn't so far for dust with a long radioactive half life.
Her lips were red, her looks were free,
Her locks were yellow as gold:
Her skin was as white as leprosy,
The Night-Mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,
Who thicks man's blood with cold.

No one ever answered this question....

Would a nuke explosion set off at the Fukushima plant consume a great deal of the radioactive fuel and convert it into lesser isotopes? ...or would it just scatter the radioactivity???
Still looking for legit answers from those who know the process.

Also.....wouldn't turning Fukushima into a seawater filled crater be a better solution than leaving it as is??

Fukushima correlates well with lead up to the financial crisis of 2008...and we're still living through.

Remember how Fed and Treasury mouthpieces claimed all was contained with sub prime? Just a minor correction... when many financial people on the 'net knew it was all bullsh!t. And they were absolutely correct.

Same exact thing is happening in Japan. For the same reasons-money and CONfidence. Geopolitical scale is the same- but consequences of a negative result much more dire- for the world.

Words of wisdom from Admiral Stockdale speaking on his days in as a POW in 'Nam. What got him through....

I'm sure Sen Wyden has only the best of intentions but how does this sort of thing usually turn out?

Follow the money.

Cue video of a soon to be belching heavy black smoke unit #4 and then...

Well, shit, we just gonna have to send bechtel and halliburton and GE over there to straighten that mess out. How much it gonna cost?

Well, shit, the best way to handle it would be to give them boys some open ended no bid cost plus contracts and then just wait and see...

the only thing our govenment has done is.... most people prefer lindsey lohan and who's got talent.... says it all....
 Quoting: citizenperth

Here's the thing. Kudos to you for keeping on it. I've seen you posting from day one and your efforts to bring it out should be admired. If your press is reporting on it, than good for them as well. Ours isn't. Nothing we can do about that but keep pushing.

But when a Senator comes out and says something about it, don't bitch about "what is he gonna do?" He set the cogs of the wheel in motion. That's pretty damn good. It's friggin better than nothing, and that's what we've been seeing so far. He sent for information from different people requesting them to find out what we can allocate to it. What resources we have. Resources, not only being financial, but it could mean great minds being put on it. That's what we need. Even Arnie (who should be sainted) said he was stumped on how to fix 4.

My point is, when you're so frustrated by no one doing anything, when they DO do something, don't hack at them! At least they're doing something!

if you think about it... if #4 goes.... so will 5 and 6 as well, because they won't be able to get close to them either to maintain cooling.... if anything, they could mitigate by shoring up the emergency containment of 5 and 6 NOW....

... who the hell believes some make shift walls and a 'fabric' roof on a destroyed reactor will help..... geezus.... look at Chernobyl.... even there the corium still burns like molten lava to this day.....

OK then...explain WHY it would not work? 1dunno1
These are the questions that need exploring.
Since you say it wouldn't work.....please explain the logic and physics as to WHY.

Unless you can do that....it STILL appears as a plausible solution in consuming much of the fuel....and turning the reactor areas into a sea water filled crater.

Answers???

Since you say it wouldn't work.....please explain the logic and physics as to WHY.

Unless you can do that....it STILL seem plausible in consuming much of the fuel.

there is very much a BIG difference between a china syndrome and a nuclear bomb event..... i shall try to find a link to the research for you, as i compiled it back in may last year.... will get back to you ;)

Thanks....I would appreciate that.
Consuming the fuel seems a logical approach.

Re: BREAKING: US Senator issues press release on No. 4 Spent Fuel Pool — Warns situation worse than reported after tour of Fukushima plant
I agree with the above poster, Trying to create an uncontrolled fission reaction in the fuel rod containment using a nuclear trigger would simply result in a a very tiny amount actually being fission into lighter isotopes, which would still be radioactive The rest would be vaporized and spread mostly into the pacific ocean and western north America It is an insane idea.

The solution is to remove the fuel rods and bury them deep in a geologically table area encased in concrete and separated from each other. It won't be cheap and there will be hundredths of people that die in the process of removing the fuel rods, but the alternative is possibly the contamination of the entire northern hemisphere of the planet with nucleotides that have half lives in the thousands of years.

Re: BREAKING: US Senator issues press release on No. 4 Spent Fuel Pool — Warns situation worse than reported after tour of Fukushima plant
here is a link to berkey, where the idea was being floated around...

[link to www.nuc.berkeley.edu]

point being, is that nobody knows if it would work as it has never been done before.....

... there is other research that suggest a both for or against argument.... again, nobody knows....

the bottom line is that the energy from a nuclear bomb is expended in fractions of a second, rather than leaching out continuously into the atmosphere.... hence, we did not ELE during the sixties with atmospheric and other testings..... (it is still bad today however)

what nobody knows, is if this would work on corium or kill us all in the end by increasing significantly the spread of irradiated "stuff"... i guess the jury went out and shrugged.. called it a hung-jury....

again, nagasaki and hiroshima have populations still there....

The 9.0 last March will be nothing....
...compared to the devastation of that MASSIVE spent fuel pool going critical. :hide:

No one ever answered this question....

Would a nuke explosion set off at the Fukushima plant consume a great deal of the radioactive fuel and convert it into lesser isotopes? ...or would it just scatter the radioactivity???
Still looking for legit answers from those who know the process.

Also.....wouldn't turning Fukushima into a seawater filled crater be a better solution than leaving it as is??

yeah mate, i postulated and researched that one back in may last year...... bit late now tho i suppose.. they did seriously consider it....

THAT is what I wanted to know.
Thank you. thumbs

So a tactical nuke WOULD eliminate much of the problem. hmm
That is truly fighting fire with fire.

BS. A tactical nuke wouldn't work. What you read was a blog of someones opinion that is very wrong. Nuking Fukushima is the worst idea ever.

It was considered as an option by the military as soon as the gravity of the situation became apparent. Since it was not done, one can assume that it was determined to be a bad idea.

Don't forget that this is an unprecedented situation and the answers are not evident to anyone, even those with scientific expertise.

It may have worked if done immediately. It may have merely made the contamination worse. Better to err on the side of caution; which is ironic considering nuke power is inherently dangerous to start with.

I sincerely hope we never find out what happens when you nuke thousands of tons of nuclear reactor fuel..

It won't work because the fuel rods are not concentrated enough to create an instantaneous fission reaction. They are NOT headpins grade concentrations, there is no way this method is storage of this type of material would be allowed by international laws. What you are suggesting is the ravings of a lunatic who knows nothing about science or nuclear physics, which knowing you from this website does not surprise me in the least.
