Japan, with assistance from the U.S. government, needs to do more to move spent fuel rods out of harm’s way at the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden on Monday

Wyden, a senior Democratic senator on the Senate Energy committee, toured the ruined Fukushima plant on April 6, and said the damage was far worse than he expected

Wyden said he was most worried about spent fuel rods stored in damaged pools

He urged the Japanese government to accept international help to prevent further release of the radioactive material if another earthquake should happenWyden said the only protection for the pools from another tsunami appeared to be “a small, makeshift sea wall erected out of bags of rock”

Wyden said the spent fuel should be moved to safer storage sooner than anticipated under a 10-year clean-up plan

I felt compelled to email Senator Wyden to tell him how much I appreciate the illumination he brings to the ongoing disaster in Japan. If only we had more open and honest public servants like him!

Then apply the best minds in Japan and the US to inventing one asap! Or get permission to set off a small nuke to incinerate the Fukushima site.

Either way it's better to do something than to carp from the sidelines. If the Yanks spent less time whinging at their TVs and more time holding their elected officials to account, the world wouldn't be in the sorry state it is now.

“The scope of damage to the plants and to the surrounding area was far beyond what I expected and the scope of the challenges to the utility owner, the government of Japan, and to the people of the region are daunting,” Wyden wrote in the letter. “The precarious status of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear units and the risk presented by the enormous inventory of radioactive materials and spent fuel in the event of further earthquake threats should be of concern to all and a focus of greater international support and assistance.”

said senator is a mouthpiece clown

only humans can attempt to carry out any work at fukushima daiichi,so when he calls on japan to accept international help, you can rest assured that he has no intention of sending any of his own 4 children there but someone else's.

not only a clown
In 2011, Wyden expressed support for the no-fly zone and other intervention in Libya

a murderer

This idiot is a year late and a trillion dollars short. The situation was and is an ongoing emergency. It's being handled like a stupid government highway project, just loafing.

Engineers can create emergency fabrications to stabilize #4 fuel pool, arguably the worst problem. Some problems are intractable, but can be mitigated, like the criticality in the corium in #1,2,3. I'm totally disgusted with the absolute apathy regarding this ELE potential event.

Meanwhile, we're arguing about thugs shooting each other in Florida and Obama's vacations. Wake up people!

Re: BREAKING: US Senator issues press release on No. 4 Spent Fuel Pool — Warns situation worse than reported after tour of Fukushima plant
Since "saving face" is a major deal in Japanese society don't expect them to open their country to outside help any time soon.
What should be happening right now is, Obama should be on the phone to the Japanese government telling them in no uncertain terms to get their shit together or we'll send our people over to mop this up. Someone must do something and quickly, otherwise the Northern Hemisphere (and maybe the Southern too) is toast. There's enough radiation to wipe out all Human and animal life, which of course presents nuclear radiation problems locally from 200 some odd nuke plants here in the U.S. I say unmanned because if these fuel pools at Fukushima start burning, the radiation will be released into the air and we're downwind folks!
So the time to act was a year ago, it may already be too late.

I know they could clean all that shit up and dump it into lead lined ships and put them in a remote location, but it would cost a $$LOT OF MONEY$$ to do it! So they'll just skirt the issue and let it be a threat to mankind.

Here's the thing. Kudos to you for keeping on it. I've seen you posting from day one and your efforts to bring it out should be admired. If your press is reporting on it, than good for them as well. Ours isn't. Nothing we can do about that but keep pushing.

But when a Senator comes out and says something about it, don't bitch about "what is he gonna do?" He set the cogs of the wheel in motion. That's pretty damn good. It's friggin better than nothing, and that's what we've been seeing so far. He sent for information from different people requesting them to find out what we can allocate to it. What resources we have. Resources, not only being financial, but it could mean great minds being put on it. That's what we need. Even Arnie (who should be sainted) said he was stumped on how to fix 4.

My point is, when you're so frustrated by no one doing anything, when they DO do something, don't hack at them! At least they're doing something!

Re: BREAKING: US Senator issues press release on No. 4 Spent Fuel Pool — Warns situation worse than reported after tour of Fukushima plant
...

been screaming that one out for almost a year..... the leaders of this world are sick, repugnant and deaf.... really proves that the rich are only worried about their own opulent lifestyles during their own selfish lifespans... .and that for the most part.... the rest of the gullible public are people to pay tax for their lifestyles...... forget about the children of today and tomorrow, whilst you can get your cocaine hit today.....

At least this guy YOUR government done? Maybe now, we'll get some people moving on this. I for one, am extremely thankful that our gov't is at least doing something!

agreed.. i think of it like a hand grenade thrown into your fox hole... you all jump out... wait for it to go off... and if it's a dud?... you can then go in and fix it.....

... my point being is i think they had to wait until it was somewhat safer before venturing in... which only points out how dire the situation really is....
It's life as we know it, but only just.

people who are determined to highlight the dangers of the accident at fukushima are motivated by truth, not any solutions to the meltdowns, because there aren't any.
it has happened, they said it never would.
deal with it by telling the truth

it's 2012, how many satellite images of fukushima daiichi have you seen since this shit happened? none. because there aren't any satellites? or because the truth is being hidden?

I honestly can say I hope it kills every human being on this fucking planet. I want to see devastation, destruction and mayhem. Fuck this species. I want to watch it all burn.
