You think Fukushima is the worst? Guess again
Fukushima No. 4 has only a few hundreds of spent rods above the reactor, and former Japan's Ambassador call it a potential catastrophe.

In Taiwan Nuclear Power 2, there are 4000 spent rods stored in similar way, equal to the radiation material of 50,000 small atomic bombs! The design is GE Mark III. Because Taiwanese govt cannot find a nice place to store these rods, they've been accumulated there "temporarily" over 30 years.

If it fails someday, we have a ELE for the world. (Taipei is definitely doomed, only 20 km between Taipei downtown to the nuclear reactor!)

On Mar 16, it generated very strange 0.29G vertical vibration on the No. 2 Nuclear Reactor when they inserted control rods to perform routine shutdown. (Anyone can explain it?) It is about the vibration of a M4 earthquake. The power plant was only designed to resist 0.4G earthquake.

Taiwanese govt tried to cover up until the media and congress found out after Apr 4. They found 7 bolts broken (total 120 bolts used to fix the position of reactor). No one knows for sure if there are other bolts with issues.

If the bolts fail to work, the worse scenario is failure to insert the control rods! Then we have a nuclear reactor that cannot be shutdown! Cool?

In Fukushima, the control rods are successfully inserted, although meltdown still happened.

This reactor has been operating over 30 years, exceeding the warranty time of GE. TaiPower, which seems as corrupt as TEPCO, wants to keep it running for cheaper cost. TaiPower insisted that Taiwan Nuclear Reactor 2 is all fine. After brief repair, it will be started again on Apr 20.

Actually the worst case is very unlikely to happen since we still have many unbroken bolts and no big earthquakes happened yet (although Taiwan is on the ring of fire). I just don't get what the FUCK they are thinking!

Well then, since Fuku is already f*cked, they should send those rods over to Japan. Taiwan will be "safe" and the Japanese can make some money from it to restore their economy.

Or is this wishfull thinking...?

Lol... Actually if Taiwan nuclear power 2 is gone, we have a ELE, they can also write human history by destroying the world! This won't happen because it's unimaginable.

Post-Fukushima is Pre-InsertyourHometown!

And Taiwan is not even really bad compared to the US
where you will find much bigger Amounts!!

They/ We are really crazy to playing this Game!

It could be very bad for the Taiwanese People,
they cant (or don't want) to return to China
and Taiwan is even smaller that Honshu!

If control rods cannot be inserted because of a slight geometry change, I would guess that pouring in powered control-rod material or other neutron absorbent material through a flexible hose snaked into the opening for each control rod would work to some degree -- anyone have a knowledgeable opinion about this?

that was, powdered (crushed) control rod material, not "powered" control rod material, sorry.

Its only bad when your country knowingly builds the damn things on known highly dangerous FAULT LINES!

ENGLAND is one of the few countries in the world if any that should have the right to nuclear power plants.

I understand what you mean, but consider this. Taiwan's spent fuel is in a potential state. Fukushima, Japan's is kinetic. Considering that fact, which one is really the worst? Just asking.

Ya, right. But you may not know that many (I mean MANY) wealthy Taiwanese are also American citizens. Life will find a way. rockon

Actually I don't feel things will go bad now. I just wonder how few people are aware of this danger.

In a report of Nature journal, two of the three most dangerous nuke power plants in the world are located in Taiwan, a small island. The 4 nuclear power plants in Taiwan (three operating, one constructing) are all related to an American construction giant Bechtel, who won many contracts in post-war Iraq.

Bechtel joined venture with a construction company owned by KMT, who lost China but is still the wealthiest party in the world, to build these nuclear plants. Nuclear power plants are very expensive to build, which means a lot of money to make. The politicians seem to put money above the interest of nation.

Yes, he steals 10~20 million dollars. He is not KMT. In 2000, he tried to stop the construction of Nuclear power 4, which would cost more than 100 billions USD. This really pissed off KMT. After his terms finished, he went to jail directly. lolsign

Taipower survey raises concerns about nuclear storage site
A geological survey conducted by Taiwan Power Co. in a remote part of the eastern county of Hualien has caused concerns about plans for a permanent nuclear waste storage facility.

Lawmakers demanded an explanation from the Atomic Energy Council April 16 following reports that the survey had been under way for some time in Xiulin Township without the local government or residents having been informed.

Aboriginal legislators Lin Cheng-er and Kung Wen-chi called on Taipower to abide by the Indigenous Peoples Basic Act.

The area is home to the Truku and Sedig peoples, whose consent should be obtained before a development project is allowed to proceed, they said.

The Truku and Sedig People are the Aboriginals
and very different than the Chinese-Taiwanese!

Broken bolts shut nuclear reactor
Taiwan Power Co (Taipower), the operator of the nation’s nuclear power plants, said yesterday it has finished replacing and repairing six anchor bolts after local media reported that seven anchor bolts of the first reactor at the Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant in Wanli District (萬里), New Taipei City (新北市), were found to be fractured or cracked during annual maintenance last month.

Because the seventh anchor bolt interferes with other devices on site, it will be necessary to use alternative means to repair it, and its replacement has been scheduled for inclusion in the next major rehabilitation project, Taipower said.

The first reactor, which began commercial operation in 1981, was temporarily shut down on March 16 for routine maintenance. Earlier this month local media revealed that one of the anchor bolts was broken, two fractured, and four cracked. The report was later confirmed by Taipower

Yes, Lungmeng is the official name of Taiwan 4th Nuke Power Plant, still under construction.

Remember Ferdinand Marcos? He took 80 millions USD as commission for Nuclear Power in Philippines. This was huge money at that time.

Maybe it's how elites sell nuke power to developing countries.

Thank you Atom Boy for the link to English news. I find it interesting that GE's 30-year warranty expired in 2011. Then it starts to have issues now.

I wish our govt can shutdown this "no-warranty" power plant permanently.

Re: You think Fukushima is the worst? Guess again
Sorry I provided wrong number of spent rods in Fukushima unit 4.

1,535 spent fuel rods in unit 4. (30m high)
6,375 spent fuel rods in common fuel pool above unit 4 (50m high)

So Fukushima is the winner! It has more spent fuel rods than Taiwan 2nd Nuclear Power Plant (4,000 spent fuel rods).

No matter in Fukushima and Taiwan, these spent fuel are all not protected by containment vessel. They are for "temporary" storage in GE's original design.
