Why is that?

Papers, press releases, and getting published. Great stuff giving credence conspiracy to withhold information

That would be a consideration for them why?

Out there in the real world the 'lunatic fringe' doesn't even register on most people's radar.

Lunatic fringe and the study of water from Lake Vostok have nothing in common.

They just don't care. Nobody gives a shit about this monumental event.

Maybe what they found was unexpected, otherwise they wouldn't have announced the project to the public to begin with.

And if it were a front project for something undisclosed they probably would have had the "results" ready in advance.

A million year old pristine water sample was taken from Lake Vostok over two months ago.

How many months does it take to analyze a water sample?

Not long if you have the sample with the right equipment.

What does take long getting the sample to the right equipment and then analyze the results when publicizing them.

It seems as though this potentially magnificent event just disappeared into the abyss of historical snuff...

Last night I was reading the Hopi Indian beliefs about Mother Earth and the birthing of the new world, or the new earth.
Theres so much that describes the laboring of the earth, the birthing process..
and when Lake Vostok has this 'sterile' water, like the water that breaks when a woman gives birth... well, there you go.

Antartica is the birth canal/vagina if you will.

What the scientists did by drilling that hole into the ice was akin to a woman getting stabbed by a needle into her womb.
Not nice.
So, thinking like an Indian or a woman who just got stabbed, I'm guessing that Mother Earth is on the crankytrain to PaybacksVille.
