LARGE VERY BRIGHT CROSS-SHAPED PLANET or STAR is visible in the Western Sky

That is the exact thing I saw in the sky last week, was staring at it - just like you described! The night I saw it was the same night that that tired pilot thought it was an oncoming plane, took the jet plane into a dive, and injured 16 of his passengers. They said it was the planet Venus. I can see why he was confused, as it was quite a sight. It has gotten badly overcast here in San Diego, so cannot look tonight. Take some pics, maybe?

Yes. It seems like Venus at its brightest. It's in the right quadrant of the sky.

But why is it cross shaped? The pictures I am seeing just show a round white object or the disk of of the plant. I am seeing this through the binoculars (ignore the zeros):

Why does it look like this? Reflected light? Pollution over LA? Our Atmosphere?

Well whatever. Its cross shaped. What makes it look that way. I tried taking a picture but it doesn't come out well enough. Too much ambient light in Los Angeles.

Venus is so bright right now because it is a crescent. This is also probably why some of you are seeing the different "shapes" of the light being reflected. Most of what you see from Venus right now through a telescope is the dark side. The reason it is so bright when it is crescent is that it is at it's closest to Earth.

Venus is not currently visible from the US. Saturn however is visible and very bright in the western sky tonight...

Venus is visible from the US, I was just looking at it here in AZ an hour ago. lol.

OP, I have been hearing rumors that there is a huge glowing orb in the center of the solar system. Some people even think that it may be powered by thermonuclear explosions. Sounds crazy I know but maybe you should look into it...I mean look directly into it.

I thought it was Jupiter. Due to the size of it....That was before I relised it was getting bigger and bigger.

if you look carefully you can now start to see a moon orbiting this thing.

After sundown Venus IS visible in the west. Saturn is in the east.

Well Northern US hemisphere here (Illinois) and I literally looked at it with Binoculars last night and was frustrated because I could not get a clear shape in view either. For me it almost looked like 3 large bright lights converging on one another.

Also the glare did give it a cross shape to it but definitely seemed like it had three sources of light all the same brightness, I was pretty sure it was Venus but if you guys are saying Venus is NOT visible in the US northern hemisphere then W T F !?
