Jailed for $280: The return of debtors' prisons

How did breast cancer survivor Lisa Lindsay end up behind bars? She didn't pay a medical bill -- one the Herrin, Ill., teaching assistant was told she didn't owe. "She got a $280 medical bill in error and was told she didn't have to pay it," The Associated Press reports. "But the bill was turned over to a collection agency, and eventually state troopers showed up at her home and took her to jail in handcuffs."

Although the U.S. abolished debtors' prisons in the 1830s, more than a third of U.S. states allow the police to haul people in who don't pay all manner of debts, from bills for health care services to credit card and auto loans. In parts of Illinois, debt collectors commonly use publicly funded courts, sheriff's deputies, and country jails to pressure people who owe even small amounts to pay up, according to the AP.

Still think you're free, slaves??

I was jalied over a $108 clerk of the circuit court fee, which I had paid. My payment mysteriously vanished from the books after I told the clerk that she needed to be trained in customer service people skills and then they issued a bench warrant for my arrest.

Maybe next time you'll think twice about being a smart-ass. Hint: you were not a "customer" if you were paying a fine/court fee, etc.

It would be cheaper for the state just to pay the debts instead of incurring more debt with incarceration.

Stupid what they do.

It was a fee for handling child support payments. I was a customer. You fail.

You are a customer if you are paying for a service.

This service provided for by the government.

Watch out, a paying customer!!!

Re: Jailed for $280: The return of debtors' prisons!!
How many millions are behind on their mortgage payments right now?

How many millions are behind on credit card payments?

How many millions have lost or will lose their jobs?

How many millions are dealing with things like illness, divorce, widowhood, aging, etc. that prevents them from working?

And the legal system intends on jailing all of them?

Another pearl of idiocy from America.

Re: Jailed for $280: The return of debtors' prisons!!
I just did 23 days in jail on a civil debt, and yes it is child support. I have to turn myself back in on Tuesday, and don't even go to court until May 18th.

The funny thing, is they say it is not punitive incarceration, they call it coercive. How am I supposed to find a job from Jail? There is no access to the internet, and since I can't afford to pay child support, how can I afford 3 dollars for a phone call?

Also, as a side note, I also don't "earn" credit for time served, so really, all it is, is charging tax payers to feed and house me. They don't even try to educate jail, they just put you in a pod, and turn on the TV.
