It can be a fucking nightmare for the prisoners. They ride for 24 hours in shackles with 12 hour breaks in between along with limited bathroom breaks. Each van has two drivers who take turn sleeping while sitting up during the 24 hour ordeal. The vans smell like urine because there often aren't enough bathroom breaks. The average criminal passenger is in the vehicle for 3 to 4 DAYS before he or she reaches his or her destination! The guard told me about one woman who was transported for something like 24 days as the van hopscotched back and forth all over the place picking up and dropping off prisoners. It is brutal to be in leg- and handcuffs sitting in a van with no window for hours on end. One prisoner wrote that his 4 days in the Transcor van was worse than the three years he spent in prison. |
