April 23 starts "Cybersecurity Week" . . . CISPA vote - watch this 8 minute video from start to finish
KEY POINTS ABOUT CISPA:

An overly broad, almost unlimited definition of the information can be shared with government agencies. And because that info is shared “notwithstanding any law,” CISPA trumps any federal or state privacy law that currently prohibits disclosure.

Enactment is likely to lead to expansion of the government’s role in the monitoring of private communications.

It could shift control of government cybersecurity efforts from civilian agencies to the NSA.

It creates a backdoor wiretap program because the information shared with the government isn’t limited to just cybersecurity, but could also be used for other purposes, such as law enforcement or by intelligence agencies.

Especially listen to what he says during the final minute of the video, about how everyday people will have no recourse, can't even get a lawyer to sue if their (innocuous) information is somehow used against them, because TPTB have "litigation immunity".

It's interesting that no one has commented . . .

Does the information presented in the video concern anyone?

The idea that people can misuse that private information with no possibility of repercussions is amazing. That's like asking someone to guard a bank vault and telling them if they take everything in there no one will do anything. Sure some people might do the right thing but I'm gonna assume most come out with their pockets stuffed.

It's just another expectation of privacy that they're chopping away at. If your e mails to your spouse and children are no longer private how long until the conversations you have around your dinner table or in your bedroom aren't either.

One more small step.

Yes, just more rights taken away from citizens.

The thing is, anyone who's on the internet is at risk, susceptible to privacy breaches, but this legislation appears to be way over the line.

Per CISPA, (like so many other things in society today), people who are doing nothing wrong and have absolutely nothing to hide are basically thrown into the same group or classification as those who ARE doing illegal or nefarious things and have plenty to hide.

All the everyday citizens who are doing nothing wrong but still feel their emails, surfing, etc. should be their own business have no say-so and no legal recourse.

More info about CISPA:

Organisations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Sunlight Foundation and Avaaz.org have all voiced their concerns about the extent to which the government would be able to monitor private information.

The Sunlight Foundation's John Wonderlich wrote in a blog post that Cispa "is terrible on transparency" and that the shared personal data between firms and the government would be exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

"Information that shouldn't be shared is already protected by law, through largely uncontroversial exemptions," wrote Mr Wonderlich.

"The FOIA is, in many ways, the fundamental safeguard for public oversight of government's activities. Cispa dismisses it entirely, for the core activities of the newly proposed powers under the bill."

The Electronic Frontier Foundation said in a statement on its website that the language used in the act was too vague.

"The broad language around what constitutes a cyber-security threat leaves the door wide open for abuse," stated the organisation.

Here's a BIG surprise . . . Facebook supports CISPA!

According to FB vice-president of US public policy:
Cispa "would make it easier for Facebook and other companies to receive critical-threat data from the US government".

Uh-huh.

So this gets unpinned and drops to page 3 with only a few replies . . .

Is this yet another example of the apathy of most people?

Opposition grows to CISPA 'Big Brother' cybersecurity bill

CISPA is met with a last-minute wave of opposition, including from Rep. Ron Paul and 18 House Democrats.

But it may not be enough to stop the U.S. House of Representatives from approving the bill on Friday.

Can this be pinned for the week, since they are scheduled to vote on Friday?

Everyone should watch this video.
