seeker2 (OP) User ID: 14903365 Thailand 04/23/2012 04:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There has been catastrophic flooding everywhere! What lack of water to fill the aquifers? Quoting: Being * gnieB The way he explained it is that the water table, I mean deep water tables have dropped. Much of the water from rain runs off and it takes time to refill the aquifers. How much of the surface water actually makes it down that deep. He told me about one place in texas where a whole lake was devoted to pumping water into the ground but it was drying up. Don't recall the name. |
seeker2 (OP) User ID: 14903365 Thailand 04/23/2012 04:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Water injection [link to en.wikipedia.org] Secondary recovery Over the lifetime of the well the pressure will fall, and at some point there will be insufficient underground pressure to force the oil to the surface. After natural reservoir drive diminishes, secondary recovery methods are applied. They rely on the supply of external energy into the reservoir in the form of injecting fluids to increase reservoir pressure, hence replacing or increasing the natural reservoir drive with an artificial drive. Sometimes pumps, such as beam pumps and electrical submersible pumps (ESPs), are used to bring the oil to the surface. Other secondary recovery techniques increase the reservoir's pressure by water injection, natural gas reinjection and gas lift, which injects air, carbon dioxide or some other gas into the bottom of an active well, reducing the overall density of fluid in the wellbore. Typical recovery factor from water-flood operations is about 30%, depending on the properties of oil and the characteristics of the reservoir rock. On average, the recovery factor after primary and secondary oil recovery operations is between 35 and 45% |

As water tables fail, the springs that feed rivers also go dry, reducing flows. Numerous nations are overpumping aquifers as they struggle to satisfy growing water needs, including each of the big three grain producers--China, India, and the U.S. More than half of the world's people live in countries where water tables are falling. There are two types of aquifers: replenishable and nonreplenishable (or fossil). The shallow aquifer under the North China Plain and most found in India are replenishable. When these are depleted, the maximum rate of pumping automatically is reduced to the rate of recharge. For the fossil variety, such as the vast U.S. Ogallala aquifer, the deep aquifer under the North China Plain, or the Saudi aquifer, depletion brings pumping to an end. Farmers who lose their irrigation water have the option of returning to lower-yield dryland farming--if rainfall permits. In more arid regions, however, such the Middle East or America's Southwest, the loss of irrigation water means the end of agriculture. |

One crucial source is a huge underground reservoir, the 800-mile Ogallala aquifer which stretches from Texas to South Dakota and waters one fifth of US irrigated land. The aquifer was formed over millions of years, but has since been cut off from its original natural sources. It is being depleted at a rate of 12 billion cubic metres a year – amounting to a total depletion to date of a volume equal to the annual flow of 18 Colorado Rivers. Some estimates say it will dry up in as little as 25 years. Many farmers in the Texan High Plains, which rely particularly on the underground source, are now turning away from irrigated agriculture as they become aware of the hazards of overpumping. At least if there is no one is drilling for it. Have not seen one oil rig any where in Thailand and I have been around. From what he said a combination of things could create a problem. Notice a lot of small earth quakes in areas that have had few and it would seem to follow a pattern of places rich in oil, gas and coal Perhaps the earth quakes are methane explosions. sk Last Edited by seeker2 on 04/23/2012 05:45 PM |
