I spend alot of time trying to think about what we could design or utilize at present to help remove the Fuel Rods and allow a real clean-up(if possible)of the entire site..but it is just such an horrendous mass of twisted metal and puddles of death that knowing where to begin alone is a massive challenge.

The correct solution would be to not build nuclear reactors on active sysmic faults.

The greatest health threat from this disaster to the world, and especially to north America, if one is to disregard Japan, is materials being vaporized and entering the atmosphere.

That reactors have completely melted through and that water is and will continue to be contaminated is inevitable.

Like bug said, dilution is important, and the fact is that the mass of the ocean provides a better sink and protection from the effects of the materials, than does the air, or the ground water.

I don't deny that the radiation of the oceans with this pollution could be an ELE for some ocean species. To say this is sad is an understatement, but in the big picture I see why it is reasonable for them to pump radioactive groundwater to the ocean, although they should filter it as well as they can, even if that is not totally effective.

On the other hand I feel that there are some things that could be done that aren't being done, to reinforce spent fuel pools that are weakened, to remove fuel rods, and to cap over hopeless melt-through areas in boron and concrete.

Honestly Perth, I am not sure, but I did study nuclear sciences some in college, never got a degree however, and I suspect that much of the effect of sea water contamination will be better mitigated, sequestered, and diluted, and possibly not create so much damage as up on land and in the air. But it is complex, the various materials involved and their effects, and of their dispersal or concentration areas for sure, and I am not 100% sure of my opinion on that matter. By all means correct me if you think I am wrong.

I have no doubt at all that warehouses filled with charitable donated stuff is still locked up permanently and will never get distributed - or it's been stolen or sold.

Fund raisers! Don't make me laugh! The charities that might have made a positive difference were not there or never mentioned in the media here. Rothschild's Red Cross is now collecting on the interest of the money conned from idiots who wanted to feel they were helping. Actually the Red Cross is still sitting on money and getting interest from the Hanshin Earthquake back in 1995.

Volunteering for clean-up missions? Well if it makes you feel good. But if you're a young man or woman who still wants children and/or a good chance at a long and healthy life then I hope you took the necessary precaution of bringing along your own radiation testing equipment because the figures released by the government and thus the figures used by organised charity missions - have never been accurate and have invariably been skewed or simply omitted.

The one and only thing that can help those poor people living where the radiation is accumulating is to GTFO People are moving from Tokyo-on-up at a quickening rate as they realize they have been duped. That is the situation as best as I can ascertain from the info out there. It would be good though if more people actually understood what is going on.

I also have an uneasy feeling from all of this now as I think that TPTB now view nuclear weapons as viable again for limited use due to the fact that we had Chernobyl and now Fuku and the resulting contamination. They have been using the depleted uranium bombs like they are going out of style ................ I just have this bad feeling that I can't shake.
