I want to buy a gun this coming May
I want to buy a gun this coming May, my friend has an AR-15 and I was thinking about buying one as well. I remember that people on here saying to go for the AK-47, but the AR-15 will be more easy to find in America considering it is used in the armed forces and police forces. I would buy the barrel that allows me to fire the 5.56 round along with the .223 round. What other guns would you guys recommend that I look at, more for a SHTF scenario?

How experienced are you? And how much $$ can you afford including ammo?

Re: I want to buy a gun this coming May
no there is a NATO 5.56 round which does not shoot in the barrel of a stock AR-15 hence buying the barrel that works with the NATO round :) I will have about $1000 to spend including ammo. The AR-15 kit would cost around $600. And I already have a shotgun, I need either a rifle or a handgun

No you're the noob. .556 can handle .223 but .223 can't handle .566 because it can blow the barrel off due to the higher pressure release from the .566

Beretta CX4 Storm - pistol carbine.

[link to www.berettausa.com]

Highly customizable (Pistol grip, sights, barrel shroud, etc).

Comes in 9 mm, .40 S&W, and 45 ACP. Gun can easily be reconfigured for left or right handed shooting. You'll save $$$ on ammo too buy getting a pistol carbine. 40 cal version holds 15 rounds and could be modified to accept larger Beretta clips if you wanted, but that might not be legal depending on your state laws. Highly accurate.

Retail is $800-900.

The differences between the 5.56x45 nato and 223 is guns chambered for the nato round has a .10 longer throat in the chamber to account for the crimping in military rounds, I don't think I have seen an AR-15 that is made just for the 223.

sounds like you have enough $$ for about a thousand rounds ammo which you could burn through pretty fast with an AR15. they're fun to shoot so be disciplined or you'll end up with a gun and no ammo.

in all honesty there is probably as much 7.62x39 ammo stashed in this country as 5.56 or .223. i would recomend an ak. they are less money, they go bang every time, a total ratard can maintain one. i'm am not saying you are a ratard i'm just saying when shit happens u want a weapon that works. u might not be shooting matches whith it but when u pull the damn trigger things happen. just my .02

Fuck yes
I love my px4 and cx4, both use interchangeable 17 round 9mm magazines
I like the AR and the AK too but to ask any group which to get is a waste of time
Everyone has an opinion and they are all wrong
If I owned a 12 gauge and only had $1000 bux to throw down I would get a smith and wesson mp15-22 and a walther p22 then spend the remaining $200-$300+ on ammo
thats my take
whatever you get, it will be awesome

fuck yeah

5.56 and .223 Remington are not the same.

Wannabe mistake.

They have slightly different specs. .223 Remington is the sporting round. 5.56x45mm is the NATO designation of a similar round.

Before you go buying guns, you need to know what you need.

Google the word "yontg". There is an article out there written by "NetRanger" that has a comprehensive explanation of what you need. In his words he claims its irresponsible for any household to not have these three guns and some ammo. He mentions several packages as do the comments below.

Good luck!

I'd go with the AK myself. Can't go wrong with either one but with 1000 bucks to spend you can get more ammo with the AK purchase. A nice AK will run quite a bit less than the AR purchase and they both tear shit up!

Noooot Exactly.

The 5.56 has increased muzzle pressure and the breach as well as the barrel need to be able to withstand it.

Re: I want to buy a gun this coming May
I've got 3 Mini-14s. They outshoot and outperform the ARs. Though the AR platform is a good one, its a tinkertoy compared to the construction of the Mini-14.

Worst thing about the AR is its "shitting where it eats". Lost of blowback and powder residue right up into the action. None of that with the Mini-14. Clean as a whistle no matter how much you shoot it. I've got one that I've run about 2000 rounds through and I've never wiped it off and I've never cleaned it. Pretty damned amazing if you ask me.

AK, AR, M14. Just pick one.

Don't let them tell you an AK isn't accurate either. They may not be able to hit a golf ball at 100 yds but they're. good enough and, frankly, that 7.62x39mm round makes the 5.56x45mm look a little bit wimpy. 125gr at 2800fps beats 55gr at 2900fps any day.

Personally, I fell in love with the .223/5.56 back in the late 70s. I've got autos, bolts, break actions and pumps in the chambering. It rocks. I've shot over 400 rock chucks with one of my bolt actions and a number of them with my first Mini-14 (I've had the bolt since 1978 and the one Mini since 1982).

Pick what you like but don't be afraid to "fall out of love". I had an AR once. Wasn't impresse. Same with the AK. Hehe. I traded them both for stainless Mini-14s.

But, don't expect to put a scope on a Mini-14. You'll be disapointed. At least I have. But the factory peeps on them are pretty good.
