Christchurch residents were woken by a "violent shake" overnight.

A magnitude 4.2 quake struck at 2.34am and was felt widely throughout the city, GNS Science reported.

It was centred within 5 kilometres of Christchurch and was 9km deep.

The quake woke some Christchurch residents, including Simon Hunter, who described it as "violent".

Another Cantabrian described the quake as "annoyingly big, rumbly and ill timed."

"[Quake] wakes up Christchurch, and more irritatingly, my family," Andrew Cain said shortly after the quake struck.

"Things fell down and its too cold to check what they were."

Alpine Fault considered ticking time-bomb

GNS Science and University of Nevada-Reno scientists have found that the southern part of the 800 kilometre-long fault _ which runs along the western edge of the Southern Alps from Marlborough to Milford Sound _ causes quakes of around magnitude 8 every 330 years on average.

Dating leaves and seeds from a river terrace at Hokuri Creek near Lake McKerrow in far northwestern Southland, just north of Milford Sound, revealed 24 Alpine Fault quakes between 6000BC and the present.

Other research has found the most recent was in 1717, meaning the next may be only 30 or 40 years away, based on averages.

Professor Richard Norris, from the geology department at Otago University, said the Alpine Fault had the highest level of probability for rupture of any fault in New Zealand.

``Westland obviously is at high risk, with widespread damage likely and roads, bridges and other transport links likely to be badly affected (as well as the tourist trade),'' he said.

The fault crossed the main West Coast road in many places, and with an estimated 8m displacement would completely destroy it.

''Intensities further east in places like Queenstown, Te Anau, Wanaka and Mt Cook will be high enough to cause landslips and do damage,'' Norris said.

Project leader Kelvin Berryman of GNS Science said ''a major earthquake in the near future would not be a surprise''.

The last personal conversation I had with him he blathered on about being a fascist and how much he admired Franco (of 1940's Spain, where the Nazis practiced for WW2).
I knew him years ago when he still exhibited slight signs of being sane.
Down to about .021% by my estimation and the only thing that really keeps him going is the transmitter M16 implanted when he was a lecturer in psychology in Oz, before they reassigned him to Satanchurch.

But rationally -which means disregarding the blatherings of born again loony xtians also-here's how it is.
Shortly after the EQs began a man I know who is logical and sane and has some experience formulated the following theory which has been borne out by subsequent events and also (through the gossip network) been confirmed by the EQC people-who kept it quiet.
The basic source of the EQs is in the area of the Greendale fault.
From there, there are two fracture lines that run west to east.
One is along the northern border of Satanchurch, the other on the Port Hills side, with an arm heading south via Diamond Harbour.
The pressure has been released along these two lines, out to sea, with Satanchurch caught in the middle, hence the devastation.
Once the energy has dissipated offshore then things will be pretty much over.
His theory fits with what has actually happened.
I can remember a time when there were several noticeable quakes each day (not to mention the big ones!)but now whole days or even weeks go by with nothing much happening.
Barring a freakish collapse of the continental shelf line it's all pretty much over.

P.s for those that don't know, Satanchurch has always been a dark and sinister place, as locals will confirm.
