Police shoot dead Cisco the Dog - Policeman writes article for Statesman saying No Blame

You have probably all heard about Cisco the dog that was killed by a cop a couple of weeks back.

Quick recap

The Scene:

- Officer is called to an address in Austin for a domestic violence dispute

- Officer goes to wrong address and confronts a man in his garden, draws his weapon and tells the man not to move.

- Cisco the mdog, comes bounding through the garden and 3 seconds later is shot dead by the officer.

The Follow Up:

Cisco get a national audience and a Facebook page and the story goes viral and national

Austin PD investigate, and find no fault, and there are zero consequences for the officer

Outrage from the public pours into Austin PD.

The Latest:

An article appears in the Statesman called "No Bad Guys to Blame", here [link to www.statesman.com]

And it just so turns out that the journalist that wrote the article is none other than the President of the Police Association in Austin. Note, all comments are turned off at the bottom of the article.

There are increasing dog shootings and general abuse of police power everywhere, we can all see that.

Some key questions not asked as yet or covered in the newspaper article:

1) An officer may use deadly force? I may be wrong here, however I thought a police officer was only allowed to use deadly force if they believed their life to be in danger?

2) Clearly there is a huge difference between a dog barking on private property and defending its own territory, versus say a snarling aggressive attack from a pack of dogs loose on the street.

2.1) Is there any differentiation made in police training or is it simply up to the police officers discernment? It seems to be that current police standards and training are wide open to abuse and an easy out, as we see with the Cisco case.

What are your thoughts on the white wash and the increasing abuse of force?

I know some great and honorable cops, and yet surely this kind of white wash is just going to increase the divide between the public and the police. The public that the police are supposed to protect.

Do they really believe that the public is so ignorant and stupid that an article like this can be written and people wont see through it?
