Criminal parents

A nine-year-old, a 10-year-old and an 11-year-old spend the afternoon at Singleton stealing and damaging vehicles, a rampage brought to an end when a car owner chased and caught the youngest and the oldest.

Police, so we read in The Herald yesterday in a report by our chief police reporter, Dan Proudman, were waiting for the 10-year-old when he arrived on a train at Muswellbrook at 7.45pm.

Police know the 10-year-old well - he's on bail on a charge of armed robbery going back to September, and bail conditions are especially relevant: he is not leave his home unless accompanied by a responsible adult and he is to abide by a 6pm-8am curfew! A responsible adult may have been asking too much.

So, where are the parents or carers for these three boys? Why are they not held responsible before the courts for these boys' crimes?
Because of their age the boys' responsibility for these crimes is greatly diminished, and not recognised at all in the case of the nine-year-old, and, I say, because of the boys' ages the parents' responsibility for the crimes is greatly increased.

Burmese army moves in after seven die in religious clashes

Burma's President declared a state of emergency yesterday in a western state where tensions between Buddhists and Muslims have unleashed deadly violence.

Thein Sein issued the declaration in a speech televised nationally. A state of emergency allows the military to take over administrative functions for the area affected.

The move follows rioting on Friday in two areas of Rakhine that state media say left at least seven people dead and 17 wounded.
Hundreds of houses were burnt down and the unrest spread over the weekend. State television had earlier announced that a 6pm-to-6am curfew had been imposed in Rakhine's capital, Sittwe, and three other townships..... more ...

An 11-year-old boy in Bahrain has been released without bail after nearly a month in police custody.

One of the child’s lawyers, Mohsen al-Alawi, told Al Jazeera on Monday that judges had decided to release the boy but that his trial was set to continue on June 20.

The boy, Ali Hasan, faces charges of joining an illegal gathering and other claims related to the ongoing unrest in the troubled Gulf nation.

The Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) had reported that Hasan was detained near his home in the Bilad al-Qadeem neighbourhood of the capital Manama by plainclothes officers on May 13. The prosecution then charged him with “joining an illegal gathering”.

Bahrain's chief prosecutor for juveniles, Noura Al-Khalifa, said in a statement on Sunday that Hasan was arrested on May 14 while blocking a street outside Manama with garbage containers and wood planks.

She said he pleaded guilty, admitting that he blocked the road repeatedly after police would clear the blockade, and that he was arrested on his third attempt to shut the road.

She claimed he confessed to have done that after a man accused of stirring trouble gave him and some of his friends three dinars, or about $8. ... more details ...

Catholic official found guilty of covering up sexual abuse by priests

Monsignor William Lynn, who served as secretary of the Philadelphia Archdiocese from 1994 to 2001, was acquitted of two other counts — one of conspiracy and a second charge of child endangerment.

Lynn, 61, who took the witness stand for three days during his 10-week trial, is not charged with molesting children, but rather with covering up crimes of priests who did.

A mother has been charged with abusing her 10-year-old daughter who was found locked in a cupboard that reeked of urine.

The 29-year-old woman faces charges of assault, child abuse and endangerment in Kansas City in the United States.

Officers freed the girl, who weighed only 14kgs, after responding on Friday morning to a call to a child abuse hotline.

Neighbours told police they did not know the malnourished child even lived there.

A Russian mother threw her four and seven-year-old sons off a 15th floor balcony because she was “fed up” with having children.

Galina Ryabkova, 30, was arrested shortly after the incident, which took place on Sunday at the Moscow tower block in which she and her family lived.

The family live on the eighth floor of the building, but Ryabkova is believed to have taken the children up to the 15th floor before throwing them off. Her husband was away on business at the time. ..... more ....

‘Social protests’ continue across Israel


Thousands of Israelis demonstrated across the country on Saturday, continuing their resurrection of the social protest movement that rocked the country last summer.

Protesters in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the northern city of Haifa chanted slogans including “The only solution to privatisation is revolution” and “Power from money is the underworld”.

According to public radio, police were told to be on their guard following accusations of excessive force at similar protests in Tel Aviv last weekend. Eighty-five people were arrested overnight on June 23 following the detention of Dafni Leef, one of the leaders of the 2011 movement.


Protestors want the costs of food, housing and education to come down.

One of the leaders of Saturday’s protest, Uri Metouki, said that demonstrators wanted “an economy that serves the people, not just a minority”. ... more ....
