ACP Vasant Dhoble rescues 24 kids forced into begging by their ‘parents’

ACP Vasant Dhoble is now training his guns on those who force children into begging.

The assistant commissioner of police, social service branch, led an SSB team on a raid of the Girgaum chowpatty area on Wednesday.
The team rescued 24 children forced into begging.

The children were aged between one-and-a-half to 11 years. This is the first such raid by the SSB on those forcing children into begging.

Eight women have been arrested for making the rescued children beg at signals near the Girgaum chowpatty beach, and a case has been registered at the Gamdevi police station under The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, and under the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959.

Dhoble said that the children have been sent to the rehabilitation home at Dongri, while those arrested have been handed over to the Gamdevi police for further investigation .... more ....

UN polio suspension affects 22,000 children in Pakistan


* WHO suspended polio vaccinations over Gadap shootings last month and has not yet been approved to join next campaign

KARACHI: Around 22,000 Pakistani children are at risk in Karachi after the World Health Organisation (WHO) suspended polio vaccinations over a spate of bloody shootings, a UN official warned on Thursday. WHO, a partner in government efforts to eradicate the disease, suspended activities in part of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, last month and has not yet been approved to take part in the next campaign due in September.

On July 17, a UN doctor from Ghana working on polio eradication and his driver were shot in Gadap Town and three days later a local community worker who was part of the same campaign was shot dead in the same area.

"We had a successful campaign in Karachi until those attacks," said Elias Durry, senior WHO coordinator for polio vaccination in southern Sindh. The campaign targeted 2.2 million children in Karachi, but 22,000 children in Gadap Town were not administered polio drops because of security fears, he added. "We fear the children of Gadap could be in danger of polio if we cannot go to them during our next campaign in September," Durry said.

More than 200 policewomen and former officers have filed a class action lawsuit against the Canadian federal police force, allegedly for being sexually harassed on the job.


Hearings opened on Thursday in Vancouver’s British Columbia Supreme Court to verify a suit filed by a young veteran after more women joined in on the complaint, said lawyer David Klein, AFP reported.


The women came forward in support of the suit filed in March by Janet Merlo, a 19-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), saying they were also subject to sexual abuse and harassment on the job.

Klein said the lawsuit declares "that there are problems with the system," which are "problems the RCMP has been aware of for many years, problems they should have fixed many years ago, problems my clients now want them to repair."


Numerous accounts of sexual harassment against the policewomen have found their way into Canadian media.

Gunman opens fire in US temple, at least six dead


OAK CREEK, Wis. // At least six people were killed yesterday when a gunman opened fire at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee, and the suspected shooter later died in an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities said.

Police were called to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in the suburb of Oak Creek, where witnesses said several dozen people were gathering for a service. Authorities found four people dead inside the temple and two outside, Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt said.

Sunny Singh, 21, of Milwaukee, said a friend pulled into the temple's parking lot, heard shots and saw two people fall down. The friend then saw the shooter reload his weapons and head to the temple's entrance, Singh said.

The first police officer to arrive at the temple engaged in gunfire outside the building with a man police believe was the shooter, Wentlandt said. The suspect was killed, he said.

B.C. man found guilty of pimping stepdaughter



A B.C. judge has found a Penticton man guilty of sexually abusing and prostituting his teenage stepdaughter.

The man, who can't be named in order to protect the identity of the girl, was found guilty on 10 charges, including sexual assault and living off the avails of prostitution.

Judge Greg Koturbash weighed several days of conflicting testimony that pitted family members against one another.

The stepdaughter, who is now 18, told the court the abuse started when she was 12 years old.

She said the accused forced her into prostitution when she was 17 in order to financially support his drug habit.

Some family members testified they saw the accused naked in the same bed with the girl.

A soldier accused of killing two women who waved a white flag during the "Cast Lead" operation in Gaza reached a plea bargain with the military advocate general and will be jailed for 45 days. The agreement will be submitted today to the Jaffa military court, after negotiations between MAG and the soldier's attorneys. The soldier, Staff Sgt. S', from Givati Brigade will be convicted of a relatively light offense - illegal use of weapons.

The soldier's indictment is considered the most significant case handled by the MAG in relation to Operation Cast Lead. S' was originally accused of killing a woman and daughter whose names were mentioned in the UN Goldstone Report. Ria Abu Hajaj, 64, and her daughter Majda, 37, were killed as they were waving a white flag on the first day of the Israel Defense Force's ground operation in Gaza, on January 4, 2009.

Argentina’s parliament passes new anti-child labor bill


Argentina’s parliament has introduced a new bill in order to impose a range of penal sanctions against those who exploit children for labor in the South American country, Press TV reports.


Official statistics show that more than 450,000 children are forced to work in agriculture, mining and fishing activities and domestic service in Argentina. This is while the country’s national legislation prohibits “all employment ways” of anyone under 16.

Deputy Chairman of the Labor Committee Victor De Gennaro has called on the country’s parliamentarians to protect and “decriminalize” popular organizations that provide children from vulnerable sectors with job training to change their future.

Man arrested for 'shooting at mosque as 500 Muslims prayed inside'

..A 51-year-old man has been arrested for shooting at a mosque near Chicago while hundreds of worshipers prayed inside.

David Conrad, from Morton Grove, Illinois, used a pellet rifle to fire multiple shots at the Muslim Education Center mosque neighbouring his house, just after 8.30pm on Friday.

One of the shots narrowly missed a security guard stationed at the place of worship, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Christian girl with Down’s Syndrome arrested for blasphemy in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD — A Christian girl with Down’s Syndrome has been arrested on blasphemy charges in Pakistan, accused of burning pages inscribed with verses from the Koran, police and activists said on Sunday.

Police arrested Rimsha, who is recognised by a single name, on Thursday after she was reported holding in public burnt pages which had Islamic text and Koranic verses on them, a police official told AFP.

A conviction for blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan.


The official said that the girl, who he described as being in her teens, was taken to a police station in the capital Islamabad, where she has been detained since.

Angry Muslim protesters held rallies demanding she be punished, said the official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

“We had to register the case fairly quickly to prevent any unpleasant situation,” he added, referring to the demonstrations.

Rimsha was produced before a court on Friday and remanded in custody for 14 days, another police official said. She is expected to go before the court again by end of this month.

The girl’s plight is likely to reignite debate about growing religious intolerance in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where strict anti-blasphemy laws make defaming Islam or the Prophet Mohammed, or desecrating the Koran, a capital offence.

Human rights activists say the law is often used to settle petty disputes, but in the face of huge public support for the legislation, the government says it has no plans to change it .... more ugly facts on site ....

Jail for bingeing mother who left baby alone for a week

A young British mother has been sentenced to 15 months of prison by a local court after she left her toddler home alone for a week while she went out drinking.

When police broke into the house after being called by neighbours who heard the child's screams, the 15-month-old baby girl was found 'starving' in her cot, the Daily Mail reported.

Police found the house in Brecon town of Mid Wales in UK was dark and cold, with dirty clothes, empty wine bottles, beer cans and dirty nappies strewn over the floors.

The child had been on her own for more than 24 hours. She was examined by a doctor and was found to have severe nappy rash, which was bleeding.

Rakhine people cannot accept Rohingyas as citizens: Myanmar president


Myanmar’s president says people in the western state of Rakhine cannot accept Rohingya Muslims as their fellow citizens amid a hate campaign led by Buddhist extremists.


"Political parties, some monks and some individuals are increasing the ethnic hatred. They even approach and lobby both the domestic and overseas Rakhine community," President Thein Sein told Myanmar's lawmakers in an assessment report AFP revealed on Friday.

Catholic boarding school ‘torture’ on thousands of children uncovered in Switzerland

Parents who killed daughter with acid say it was her destiny

' ... A teenage Pakistani girl allegedly murdered by her parents for looking at a boy begged for her life before they doused her with acid. Her mother said it was the girl's “destiny” to die in such a fashion.

In the latest twist to a saga that has created outrage across South Asia, where acid attacks are common, the parents of the 15-year-old girl gave an interview in which they justified their actions. They said their elder daughter had previously brought "dishonour" to their family and that they would not tolerate it again.

The couple were arrested last week in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in a remote village in the Kotli district. Muhammad Zafar and his wife, Zaheen, were detained after allegedly confessing to officers that they had poured acid on their daughter, Anusha.
Though she suffered up to 60 per cent burns on her body, the couple did not take her to hospital until the following day. She died of her injuries ....

Police bust 12 gangs that kidnapped kids

" ... Ninety suspects were arrested on charges of abducting Xinjiang children and coercing them to be thieves or robbers, the Ministry of Public Security said on Wednesday.

A total of 28 children were rescued in an operation launched by police in places involving Beijing, Jilin, Guangdong, Shaanxi and Xinjiang in October, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

The police busted 12 gangs on Oct 30.

Police said the gangs are suspected of kidnapping children in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and forcing them to commit crimes such as theft in major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun in Jilin province, and Changsha in Hunan province.

Suspected gang members "beat, abused or threatened" these young children to force them to steal and rob in public places, such as shopping centers, underpasses, and railway stations, Huang Shihai, spokesman for the ministry, said on Wednesday.

The children will be sent home as soon as possible, Huang said ... ' ...

A new report reveals that thousands of children in England are being sexuality exploited by gangs each year.

The office of the Children’s Commissioner says it found almost two and a half thousand victims in the fourteen months up to October 2011.
But it has warned that even this figure might be an understatement with some agencies failing to pay enough attention to vulnerable children.

A child through a lack of choice, a lack of consent will be forced, coerced or controlled into sexual activity with 1, 2, 3, 4 or many members – sometimes adults, sometimes other young people.

It’s a terrific portrayal of powerless children suffering abuse in a variety of forms. Carlene Firmin is one of the authors of the report from the Children’s Commissioner:

“It may be that a young boy or a girl has run away from home for a variety of reasons and they’re met by a group or an individual who’d say to them, “You can stay with us, you can live in our place, but you have to have sex with this person, you have to have sex with my friend.”

Children are groomed over a number of months, sometimes years to believe that somebody is their boyfriend to later engage them in sexual activities. Organized crime groups actually arrange parties where people pay to come and sexually assault children.”
