Could Bush have avoided the Iraqi war backlash- a moral duty?

Could Bush have avoided the backlash that formed amongst the people then the congress by selling the Iraqi war on grounds that:

a) Iraq would be imploding eventually anyways, and better on our time than theirs
b) Better now than later as the country sucked and indications were Saddam might host muslim fanatics that would be a threat later
c) It was a moral duty to correct the wrongs in past US policy and depose Saddam for his past acts and noncompliance with UN sanctions,
d) It was reasonable to presume he'd be developing more weapons in the future that posed security risks.

At the time I recall being distinctly unimpressed with the notion that Saddam was a direct threat to the US, and this now seems to be the consensus. It seems furthermore that the language Bush and the administration used to sell this war was pretty cynical- basically continuing cold-war-era rhetoric of patriotism and good vs evil that sells far worse amongst people with some understanding of the nasty and dishonest US policy in that era.

The more I look at it, I think Bush made a mistake in the way he sold this war. While he did manage to get a blank check from congress, the people and their representatives turned pretty quick. Could this have been avoided by a more realistic and honest, less cynical, strategy of promoting the
