They live in chains we helped forge by our apathy.

The given dates here tell me this must be old. It's one of those e-mail jokes you get. My apologies. It's brand new to me.
-------------------------------------------------

You should know that by today's standards none of us was supposed to ever make it!!!

HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2010

Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack..
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock..
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by the state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

I grew up in the 70s and 80's and it seems like we all had tons more imagination than a lot of kids now when it came to keepig entertained during the summer and after school.
Or maybe its just my kids, but I swear they are always wanting me to take them somewhere, they are soooooo bored. I say "Make up a game, figure something out." They look at me like I have 2 heads.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12115729

Kids do not have imaginations today...

I remember as a Kid all the kids in my neighborhoods and my own brother's spent countless hours souping up their Bikes, building Skateboards, building homemade swimming pools, these kids were our future:

Builders
Carpenters
Electricians
Plumbers
Auto Mechanics

Boys today do not know how to use their hands unless it is typing on some kind of Keyboard.....

Though I'm a child of the 70s, I never lost my love for video games. Sending me back to 1957 would mean I'd have to wait 54 years for Skyrim. It would be a hard choice for me.
 Quoting: JoeJett

No, if they didn't exist you would not miss them! That's like saying you'd miss flying cars and Mr. Scott's Transporter machine. Maybe someday they'll be a reality, but until they are, how can you miss them?

There were PLENTY of interesting and exciting things to do back in the 50's and 60's. Most of them involved playing OUTSIDE. PS, there were very few fat kids. We also used our IMAGINATIONS, which is much frowned upon today. TPTB have assumed control over everything today's kids are exposed to, everything is presented to them already maxed out as far as what they can do with it. No imagination necessary. Just buy a new app, or a new video game.

All according to plan.
 Quoting: Eggcellent

I had fun with rocks, sticks and a apple tree I climbed up in and spent hours sitting up there.

Today I dont even have a smart phone or IPAD or MP3 player cause Im already overstimulated as it is.

I have a desk top computer, laptop, Satellite tv, VCR, DVD player. and a netbook for travel.

Why so much stimulation 24/7?

Must be the porn people cant unplug from. I hate humanity sometimes, were disgusting.

I stopped watching porn after I saw a girl passed on between two men , she was legal age but no breasts and asian and about 80-90 pounds, She looked like 12, This was from one of the major porn networks on cable, a pay per view so she was legal age.

But they chose her cause she looked way younger. I had enough then and never went back.

The minorities think it's better now than in the fifties?

What, free to buy drugs from the dealers on every corner?
Free to dodge bullets from drive-by shootings?
Free to HAVE TO put iron bars on every window and door,
living like animals in cages?
Free to watch their kids wind up crackheads or thugs in gangs?

Go ask a minority who grew up in the fifties
what life was like, compared to 2012.

Its not just your kids. Like. Even as a grown adult when I hang out with my younger sister. Id be acting a fool. Dancing and pretending. And. It seems like they dont understand what imagination is. Ya know?!
 Quoting: sako

They are encouraged to grow up so quickly by society. Thats why I be my goofy self with them too even if they think I'm a dork (although i know they kind of like it too). And I'm not saying technology is bad, its just hard for a lot of kids to put down the electronics and go outside. It gets pretty addicting. We make our kids do other things other than always playing their video games and such, but I wish they would want to explore and play outdoors more.

She never complained about those days. She got to stay home and raise babies and cook.

Her house always smelled good and she would invite me over to eat. She had the grace of someone who lived back then and her voice sounded nothing like the ghetto. She had the down south purr of a southern lady. She treated me like a Son. She was great.

I did grow up in the 50's and 60's. Yes, there was racism, but as a part of life not a judgement. But we also became the generation to try to bring it to an end.
What is being brought to the table here seems to be an understanding of freedoms lost. I don't think anyone can say we didn't have our problems, we just handled them differently.
