Kiwi tsunami bomb back in the news

One of New Zealand's best kept World War ll secrets, a tsunami bomb to attack Japan, is making headlines again 14 years after its cover was last blown.

London news sites the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph, in a stories appearing around the world this week, say the United States and New Zealand conducted secret tests during 1944 of a "tsunami bomb" designed to destroy cities by using underwater explosions to trigger the waves.

As was revealed in 1999, when the government declassified the "Project Seal" paperwork, much of the testing was done at Army Bay on Auckland's Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

One of the survivors of the covert group, Toby Laing of Nelson, said in 1999 that he was left with a lasting legacy.

"It was 'bang, bang, bang' all day long, that's why I'm so deaf now," Laing, then 87, said at the time.

Nearly 4000 bombs were exploded at Whangaparaoa and in New Caledonia in a bid to generate a tsunami.

Seal proponents called it an "awesome" weapon of "tremendous importance chosen to administer the coup de grace to Japan".

US Navy South Pacific commander Admiral Bull Halsey wrote to the New Zealand Government, asking them to work on it.

"Inundation in amphibious warfare has definite and far-reaching possibilities as an offensive weapon," he wrote.

A New Zealand author, Ray Waru, told the Telegraph he discovered the files buried at the national archives.

"It was absolutely astonishing," said Waru.

"First that anyone would come up with the idea of developing a weapon of mass destruction based on a tsunami ... and also that New Zealand seems to have successfully developed it to the degree that it might have worked."

It didn't come close.

An Auckland University engineering professor in charge of the project, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Leech, predicted 11-metre high waves up to four kilometres from an explosion with 2000 tons of high explosive.

"I can definitely state that I could inundate the Hutt Valley, Wellington City, and the suburbs adjacent to Lyall Bay," Leech said at the time.

But Laing said in 1999 the experiments at the dam were a failure, with few explosions producing more than a ripple.

"If you were in a small boat, you could have ridden out some of the waves," he said.

The files never revealed the intended target, but Laing said they all guessed it was intended for Japan.

At Whangaparaoa, Seal had a fenced-off compound holding a large dam in a gully.

While everyone else watched from safe positions, Laing would walk along a platform built out into the dam, set off the explosive - and run.

Seal was probably the biggest war research project New Zealand undertook, with 31 scientists and technicians from Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), who were made honorary officers of the NZ Army Engineers.

They were ordered to bring their own slide rules and graph paper.

But the head of the DSIR, Dr (later Sir) Ernest Marsden, was appalled at it and had it closed down in January 1945.

It never came close to generating a tsunami but with the Cold War, it was reactivated in 1948, and run using engineering students.

Leech, who died in his native Australia in 1973, missed out on the trip but a member of the US board of assessors of atomic tests, Dr Karl Compton, was sent to New Zealand instead.

"Dr Compton is impressed with Professor Leech's deductions on the Seal project and is prepared to recommend to the Joint Chiefs of Staff that all technical data from the test relevant to the Seal project should be made available to the New Zealand Government for further study by Professor Leech," said a July 1946 letter from Washington to Wellington.

was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1947 with the New Zealand Press Association reporting that he had been closely associated with a secret weapon which was "an effective alternative to the atomic bomb".

At the time The Dominion reported that his work "cannot even be hinted at because of security and other matters".

Leech returned to his native Australia in 1950 where he later was appointed to a project to investigate the vulnerability of Snowy Mountain dams to nuclear attack. He died in 1973.

Seal was reputedly well known in Auckland academic circles and many in the Engineer School knew the theory and knew it would not work.

But because it was secret they were not allowed to let on that they knew, and thus it continued to have a quiet half-life.

Another secret that has since come out is that New Zealand sent 11 physicists to a super-secret project in the US.

That was the Manhattan Project out of which came the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs which ended World War Two.

A series of earthquakes hit Taranaki early this morning.
Powerful earthquakes that rocked Taranaki this morning do not mean a bigger one is on the way a GNS scientist says.

Partying or not all Taranaki residents started 2013 with a bang when a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck 30km off the coast of Opunake at 3.11am.

The big shake was followed two smaller aftershocks and then a powerful 4.3 magnitude quake at 3.42am.

GNS Science duty vulcanologist said Steve Sherburn said it was not unusual to have seismic activity in the Cape Egmont fault zone where they quakes have been located.

He said between 100 and 200 earthquakes were recorded in the area each year and today’s shakes did not imply more were too come.

”There was a magnitude 6.1 in 1974 offshore of Opunake so these things are not unusual. We don’t see any evidence of a build-up phenomenon. I would be very surprised if it didn’t just fade away,” he said.

Letter To NZ Green Party: Your Credibility Will Suffer If You Don’t Acknowledge Chemtrails

This is a letter I sent to the NZ Green Party on the 13th of December, 2012. I have not received a reply yet:

Thank-you Green party for the Seasons Greetings and all the wonderful work you have done this year. Please read my enclosed copy of a letter to the editor Nelson Mail this week about aircraft emissions over Golden Bay on the 10.12.2012. The con is that we are told it is only ice crystals, and believe it! It is an enormous and on going pollution and the Green Party’s credibility will suffer if it is not taken on board as a real and happening thing. The photo I have enclosed (below) shows a triangle shape that has been overlaid over my home, no commercial aircraft is ever going to do this. Wake up, look up. Yes Aotearoa is a country to love, and the earth is a planet worth fighting for. Please do some more research. I would appreciate a reply.

It is interesting to see the publicity given in the Media about our wonderful clear skies. Yesterday both Golden Bay and Nelson were hammered yet again with trails from jet air craft that dissipated into haze and strange clouds that blocked the sunlight and obscured the stars.
If it was a factory or trucking company polluting the atmosphere as much as the aircraft are doing now they would be shut down. How is it that day after day of fine weather is blotted by haze from overhead jet trails that linger for many hours? Leaving out any theories, this is pollution and a con on a major scale. NZ Clear Skies and 100% Pure are quite hard to swallow.

I grew up in Nelson, New Zealand and travelled to and from Europe as a childand adult before settling with my son back in Nelson in 2007. I soon noticed trails coming out of planes, not realising then that they were “chemtrails.” Prior to then, I had never seen anything coming out of the back of aircraft.

Interestingly, not long after I moved back, I developed bad headaches, and my son got asthma. I went through a period of taking pharmaceutical drugs to try and address the problems. Quadrantid meteor shower to start around midnight

January 3, 2012 – SPACE – Just three days into the New Year, and star gazers are in for a treat. On January 3 (starting at midnight tonight and lasting into the morning hours), the Quandrantid meteor shower will put on a show for the Western coast of the United States, as well as Asia. The Quads, as it is more commonly known, typically produce 60 to 200 meteors per hour, but will sadly fall during daylight hours for certain time zones. The Quad showers have been observed since the early 1800s, and are relatively short lived compared to some meteor showers, starting at about midnight tonight. The shower’s peak takes place from approximately 5AM to 6AM PST. Because that places the shower’s best performance after dawn in the Eastern Time zone, those beyond the west will have trouble getting a satisfactory viewing of the event. What makes the Quads shower special? Unlike most meteor showers, the Quadrantids originate from an asteroid dubbed 2003 EH1 instead of a comet. Viewing the shower outside of the peak hours isn’t recommended; unlike some other meteor showers, there won’t be much to see outside of the strongest time of the shower. On average, viewers can expect about 120 stars per hour. Although the Quads is a major meteor shower, it is also one of the most least viewed, usually having to do with a combination of holiday distractions and an ample amount of cold weather, not to mention the low visibility on the eastern half of the US. Still, if you want to set your alarm clock, those in the mid-to-southwest will have the best weather for viewing the event. Moderate shallow earthquake near Mount Taranaki, New Zealand

Relatively strong and shallow earthquake near coast of New Zealand’s North Island
A relatively strong earthquake NOT reported by the international agencies which occurred at 03:11 on New Years night. Shallow and close to one of the bigger cities in New Zealand, New Plymouth.
Also very close to Mount Egmont (also called Mount Taranaki), an active volcano, but there are NO signs that this earthquake has any volcanic link.
The Magnitude of the earthquake was reported as a M5 at a depth of 5 km.
Geonet New Zealand has labelled the intensity as “severe” although NO report of damage was received by the authorities so far.
The mainshock was followed by a number of aftershocks.

Some more information of the volcanic activity of Mount Taranaki (we like the Maori word) :
The most recent volcanic activity was the production of a lava dome in the crater and its collapse down the side of the mountain in the 1850s or 1860s. Between 1755 and 1800, an eruption sent a pyroclastic flow down the mountain’s northeast flanks,and a moderate ash eruption occurred about 1755, of the size of Ruapehu’s activity in 1995/1996. Description
A small tornado has hit the Mayfield Golf Course near Ashburton, accomplishing four seasons' worth of pruning in four minutes. The twister struck about 6pm tonight and appears to have been confined to the golf course and an adjacent paddock of rape. It ripped out trees and scattered debris across fairways. A golf club member who sent to the course to assess the damage said some of the trees torn out were about 30-years-old. Several silver birch trees were destroyed, but the clubhouse escaped damage. While the damage around the golf course was significant, the club member, who did not want to be named, said the twister appeared to have spared Mayfield township.
