They all flow from the core. we have lots on our doorstep, some much closer than kermadec have you seen a map of them? :kermadec volcano: Yep. I've seen that map. One scary place. Magma will always choose the path of least resistance. Magma traveling the chamber to Fiji/Vanuatu has to either bust out or displace the rock to make room. No telling how this all plays out. |

New Zealand/Kermadec & South Pacific QUAKE/VOLCANO WATCH Deep 6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of lower North Island of New Zealand [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] map July 3, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND - A strong earthquake struck off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island on Tuesday, shaking residents across a wide area and toppling goods from shelves but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injury. The 7.0 (6.2 USGS) magnitude quake was centered 170 km northwest of the capital Wellington at a depth of 230 km (147 miles), the national GeoNet website reported. Some people were reported to have evacuated to higher ground on the Horowhenua coast, however a Civil Defence spokesman said there had been a low tsunami risk as the quake struck so deep. The deep depth of the earthquake spared NZ extensive damage. The U.S. Geological Service earlier reported the tremor at a 6.2 magnitude. There was no tsunami warning issued. The quake was felt throughout central New Zealand, sparking a flurry of activity on social network sites, but local media reported only minor damage. “It was a good shake but we see no damage. I felt the whole building shake,” a spokeswoman at the Opunake police station told Reuters. The quake was centered 60 km from Opunake. The New Zealand dollar dipped to a session low near 80 U.S. cents following the tremor. Christchurch, the New Zealand’s second-largest city, is still recovering from a shallow quake measuring 6.3 which killed 182 people in February 2011 and caused some NZ$20 billion ($15.5 billion) in damage. –Reuters |

New Zealand/Kermadec & South Pacific QUAKE/VOLCANO WATCH New Zealand’s 7.0 earthquake was strongest to strike the region in 119 years [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] map July 4, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – Last night’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the South Taranaki Bight is the largest to strike the region in more than 100 years, GNS Science says. The quake struck at 10.36pm, 60km south-west of Opunake in Taranaki, at a depth of 230km. It was felt strongly around the west coast of the lower North Island, and was widely felt from the Bay of Plenty to Canterbury. No tsunami was generated by the quake. Waiouru resident Adrienne Murphy told the Herald it was the “biggest shake we have felt in years.” Residents in Wellington reported being startled by shakes, which lasted for about 15 seconds. Some said the shakes were strong enough to topple household appliances, but the central Fire Service communications centre said it had received no reports of earthquake-related damage. Wellington resident Sam Rowe said he felt the walls of his house shaking. The South Taranaki Bight is no stranger to large earthquakes; A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck on March 15, 2005, at a depth of 150km. Seismologist Lara Bland said the quake was the largest to strike the South Taranaki Bight in about 119 years. In 1893 a quake struck measuring about magnitude 7.2. Only one aftershock has been recorded following the quake – a magnitude 4.6 aftershock nine minutes later – although GNS Science will be doing a background check today to see if there were others. “But we’re not expecting a very rich aftershock sequence,” Ms Bland said. GNS Science said the quake was typical to other deep North Island tremors, in that the strongest shaking occurred to the east of the epicenter, rather than directly above it. “To an extent, an earthquake that large will often be felt reasonably widely anyway, but because of the subduction zone and where it occurred, the energy has travelled very efficiently back up the dipping plate that it has occurred on so it has come to the surface in a very efficient path,” Ms Bland said. Large earthquakes are not unusual in New Zealand, with a quake larger than magnitude 7 occurring on average every three years. –NZ Herald |

New Zealand/Kermadec & South Pacific QUAKE/VOLCANO WATCH (Major) Earthquakes list July 3, 2012 – Very strong but deep earthquake in New Zealand [link to earthquake-report.com] diagram Very strong but deep earthquake in New Zealand Very deep earthquake which will probably make it harmless for damage and injuries What a difference in Magnitude ! Geonet, New Zealand’s seismological agency is referring to a Magnitude of M7.0 at also a depth of 230 km. Although much more powerful, also this Magnitude would not make a lot of difference at this very deep hypocenter. The epicenter was closest to Hawera and Opunake on the North Island, but this is is less important for deep earthquakes than for shallow earthquakes. The energy is arriving at the surface in a much wider area. Update : the earthquake has been felt all over both islands. This is normal for powerful deep earthquakes Update : considering the many people who reporting light to moderate shaking, some minor damage cannot be excluded but is not likely Update : NO tsunami danger with these very deep earthquakes Update : Geonet’s i have felt it system is down because of too many users! Update 11:13 UTC : Luckily NO damaging reports have been reported at the New Zealand seismological agency |
