We live near Whakatane too.. tho a safe distance from the coast. We felt the Te Kaha quake strongly too... my alarm clock fell off the shelf... tho it was near the edge.

How much you feel a quake depends a lot on your house foundation. If you are on a concrete slab.. you dont't feel much. If you are on piles.. more.. and if like us you have a pole foundation.. you really get swung about. At the pole end of the house I can feel the smallest quakes.. and the Te Kaha one went on and on...

I have felt the big Kermadec quakes.. they travel right down the "Volcanic Zone" and we sit very close to it. Amazing.. it is half way to Tonga..

hiya kiwi25

great to hear from you

ah, i am on a concrete floor, that may be why i dont feel the quakes

my dog sure feels a few of them, though..

yes, the GLPer whakatane said it was a long quake, too...

One strong alignment on this day (Mercury-Sun-Saturn), as well as other significant astrological aspects involving the Neptune and Uranus which may represent a possible 7.1 Magnitude earthquake for this day..

Lunar modulation indicates that the South Pacific Ocean best fit the profile that could receive this event. Best mapped location:

Easter Island Region

This is my own analysis using Heliocentric Imagery, geocentric portrait and harmonic translations to predict possible effects here on earth. i am using astrology in this forecast in-conjunction with lunar modulations.

Results will be annotated as the end of this video

Three Gorges Dam is Full; Earthquake Risks Increased
Posted by Eric Lander on October 28, 2010 6:10 AM

"It's like dipping a piece of bread in milk. The deeper you go, the more difficult it is to hold on," Fan said.

The unprecedented mass of water also increases the risk of earthquakes, he said.

Yang Yong, a Sichuan-based geologist, clarifies Fan's warning:, "When the dam reaches 574 feet (the capacity mark achieved Tuesday), it will push the region's geological instability to the fringe of catastrophe."

Three Gorges' revealed its shortcomings when floodwaters raced into the dam's 400-mile-long reservoir in July, prompting a government official to admit that the dam's flood-control capacity "is not unlimited."

Thousands of tons of garbage also accumulated amid the heavy rains, threatening to block the locks of the dam.

When approved in 1992, the dam's original cost was estimated at $8.3 billion. That figure has risen to approximately $27 billion by Beijing's estimate, while other predictions make the final cost at $88 billion.

The project received additional funding Wednesday when China Development Bank announced that it would lend more than $11 billion to China Three Gorges Corp., developer of the dam, over the next five years, Xinhua reports.

New boiling hot springs near Christchurch? New volcano activity?
BY EYE – MARCH 10, 2011

IceAgeNow posted a letter from concerned reader writting about new hot spring formed in the area of Cass Bay near Christchurch. There were various reports recently about new hot springs boiling in the peninsula. People also reporting the stench of sulphur emanating from the harbour area. Navy and army are apparently combing the area with geological survey tools. Residents are scarred that Ruaumoko volcano is coming to life. 36 million liters of water mysteriously disappeared from a reservoir in Huntsbury New Zealand following the February 22nd 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch. In past 7 days there were 88 earthquakes reported in Christchurch.

Subduction zones always have associated volcanoes inland from the point of contact and on the east coast of the South Island are several, each one occupied by a major town or city: Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin. Subduction zone volcanoes are never extinct, only dormant. New Zealand in general and the South Island especially sits astride a subduction zone where the sea floor on the west side is pushing under the sea floor on the east side causing uplift.

Volcanoes of very fine silt have sprung up around the Christchurch area since the initial quake, some as high as 2 metres have been likened to termite hills. These cones seem be linked to the smell of sulphur in some places.

Banks Peninsula forms the most prominent volcanic feature of the South Island. Geologically, the peninsula comprises the eroded remnants of two large shield volcanoes (Lyttelton fand Akaroa). The peninsula formed as offshore islands, with the volcanoes reaching to about 1,500 m above sea level. Two dominant craters formed Lyttelton and Akaroa Harbours.

New Zealand lies on the rim of the Pacific tectonic plate which is the same fracture in the earth’s crust that passes through Japan and the west coast of the United States. This fracture passes through both the North and South Islands and causes high mountains in both islands, but the geological process are different. In the South Island, the Pacific and Indo-Australian plates are smashing in to each other. This collision has created the spectacular Southern Alps mountain range. In the North Island, one techtonic plate is sliding under the other, and the result of this geological process is volcanic activity. The vast majority of thermal activity in the North Island is centred in and around Rotorua and the Central Plateau area, which makes up the centre of the island.

New Zealand has a lot of active volcanoes and a high frequency of eruptions. There are three major types of volcano in New Zealand. Volcanic activity in New Zealand occurs in six areas, five in the North Island and one offshore in the Kermadec Islands. Volcanoes in New Zealand are grouped into areas of more intensive and long-lived activity, whose position (and the composition of the lavas erupted) can be related to the large-scale movement of the tectonic plates in the New Zealand region.

Most New Zealand volcanism in the last 1.6 million years has occurred in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). The zone extends from White Island to Ruapehu. The Taupo Volcanic Zone is extremely active on a world scale: it includes three frequently active cone volcanoes (Ruapehu, Tongariro/Ngauruhoe, White Island), and two of the most productive calderas in the world (Okataina and Taupo).

The biggest and most dangerous volcano in New Zealand and the world, is actually Lake Taupo which is New Zealand’s largest lake, and is located in the centre of the North Island. This volcano last erupted in the year 186 AD, and erupts approximately once every 2000 years. This eruption was over 50 times the magnitude of the Mt St Helen’s eruption. Mt St Helens moved 3 cubic kilometers of earth, and Krakatoa (the biggest in recent times) in Indonesia moved 8 cubic kilometers, compared to 110 cubic kilometers for Taupo.

This eruption is regarded as the biggest in the last 5000 years. The event was recorded by the Chinese and the Romans. The Chinese actually heard the bang and made a record of the brilliant sunsets that lasted approximately 6 months. About 26,500 years ago, Lake Taupo had the worlds biggest and most destructive eruption in the last 70,000 years. That event dwarfed the 186 AD eruption.

The Rotorua area contains many thermal reserves that all contain good examples of boiling mud pools, hot springs, geysers, thermal rivers, boiling lakes, steam vents (fumeroles) and volcanic terraces.

Re: WHAT IS HAPPENING AT WHITE ISLAND VOLCANO??? New Zealand/Kermadec & South Pacific QUAKE/VOLCANO WATCH

Yes and you won't believe it but guess what I found that the buoy readings and water level readings are more than likely correct and are happening because of world wide rapid increase of mud volcano eruptions and that It has long been established that many mud volcanoes release enormous amounts of methane into the atmosphere [Higgins and Saunders, 1974; Hedberg, 1980] Recent improvements in seafloor imagery and seismic exploration led to the discovery of countless mud extrusive provinces all over the world (Figure 1). In fact, compared to the compilation by Higgins and Saunders [1974],more than twice as many occurrences are presently known, the number gradually increasing through time.
Most importantly, mud volcanoes occur along convergent plate margins where fluid-rich sediment is accumulated in deep-sea trenches at high rates. Such deposits then enter the subduction factory, where liquids andvolatiles are released due to increasing compactional stress and temperature. Studies of geophysical data and samples of mud volcanoes have considerably improved the understanding of the mechanics, driving forces, and evolution of the features through the most recent Earth history [e.g., Barber et al., 1986; Brown, 1990]. In addition, deep ocean drilling and submersible studies shed crucial light on eruptivity, emission of volatiles, and potential hazard originating from violent mud extrusion [e.g.,Robertson et al., 1996; Bagirov et al., 1996a; Kopf, 1999]. The wealth of results attests that mud extrusion predominantly occurs in collisional settings, with mostly pore fluids during early (often marine)stages and with hydrocarbons at later stages (often on land [e.g., Jakubov et al., 1971; Tamrazyan, 1972; Speed and Larue, 1982]). Although quantication of fluid and mud discharge in mud volcanoes is not easy because of their short-lived nature and inaccessibility on the seafloor, first-order estimates regarding flux rates have recently been attempted for various features and regions [e.g., Henry et al., 1996; Kopf and Behrmann, 2000; Etiope et al., 2002]. When put into a broader context, such estimates indicate that mud extrusion contributes signicantly to fluid back flux from the lithosphere to the hydrosphere
NATURE OF MUD VOLCANISM
The term “sedimentary volcanism” refers to the similar geometry of many mud extrusions and igneous volcanoes, and only very rarely are MVs connected with igneous activity [e.g., von Gumbel, 1879; White, 1955; Chiodini et al., 1996]. More often (and this is especially true for deep-seated features), MV occurrences have the following aspects in common: (1) an origin from thick, rapidly deposited sequences of marine clays; (2) a Tertiary age; (3) a structural association due to tectonic shortening and/or earthquake activity; (4) sediment overpressuring and accompanying fluid emission ( methane gas,,gas hydrate water, or, rarely, oil); and (5)polymictic assemblages of the surrounding rock present in the ejected argillaceous matrix [e.g., Ansted, 1866;Higgins and Saunders, 1974; Fertl, 1976; Yassir, 1987]mud with clay contents between 45 and 90%. Active extrusion of soapy blue muds as well as gas bubbling has been reported from the nineteenth century and apparently caused fish to die in coastal waters [Bristow, 1938]
WOW! This study is 56 pages long but worth the read with a lot of graphs and pictures and all the mud volcano locations the Sink Hole area is one!

I think it is a possibility that the area may be re-awakening Volcanically.

it certainly seems that way, doesnt it...

i wonder if there are any more recent indications of volcanic awakening in the south island..

They don't give me much more information but we really don't need anymore details.. do we...

I have the energy flow over New Zealand but i still don't like the fact Japan hasn't had much release.

I have read over all the posts and I must say.... what a great group that has evolved here....

I had to do a few things for the goats this week, but i also stopped in New Jersey to help my Sister and Brother inlaw... they came back to their house only to find a big tree threw their roof that smashed all the way down into their dining room table........ something similar with some of us.... they have 2 autistic teenage boys (twins) that i dearly love....

Hi Sis, How far away is the river from the hot springs? Reason why I say methane. When we go fishing her in the river and the water is down and no rain, we get a lot of methane bubbles, which do occur naturally. When you walk in the muddy river, along the edge, in the water, you will get releases similar to that. This being an eq. that would shake the mud up intensively and you would have methane release look like boiling water...
