another thought, maybe it is maori land?

if so, the owners would be knowledgeable and therefore would already be keeping an eye on this

[link to news.tangatawhenua.com]
someone at this site^^^^ might be able to give us some information, they have the articles i posted the other day about maori having been aware for ages that central plateau and rotorua/okataina volcanic areas coming to life etc

and about how they have always known that our volcanoes are an interconnected system

and the other article i posted from this site was about iwi meeting with gns after the august tongariro eruption because of their concerns of volcanic uptick, and dicussions about maori people wanting to evacuate the central plateau area due to the heightened risk we now face

Tongariro eruptions could go on for nine months – GNS

[link to www.nbr.co.nz]

Mt Tongariro could keep erupting for up to nine months, GNS volcanologist Brad Scott says.

Based on the mountain's last cycle of eruptions in the 1890s, it could keep blowing its top intermittently for weeks, or months, the scientist said this morning.

The August eruption was a "vent-clearing blast and naturally more explosive", he says.

Now that there is an open vent, it is easier for eruptions to occur.

GNS volcanologists are meeting this morning to assess the situation.

---------------------------------------

Nov 21 / UPDATED: Lake Taupo’s annual cycle challenge is under way, with Mt Tongariro’s latest eruption looking "just like another cloud".

GeoNet says the mountain erupted at 1.30pm today – almost four months since an eruption in the same area on Te Maari crater.

Air New Zealand says flights operating to some airports east of Mt Tongariro may be delayed or cancelled as a result of the eruption.

The earlier eruption closed the Tongariro alpine crossing until Labour weekend.

The Lake Taupo cycle challenge began at midday with the enduro riders starting the first of their eight laps of the lake.

Within minutes of the eruption, organiser Hayden Dickason had more marshals out on the course to warn the cyclists of the volcanic activity and to check which direction the wind was blowing.

He says he needs to keep a watch on any ash, because he does not want riders breathing it in.

Mr Dickason told NBR ONLINE he has a contingency plan in place.

The majority of the 8500 entrants will ride just one lap of the lake on Saturday.

“For event day itself, in the unlikely event something big happens we’ve definitely got contingency plans in place to alert people straight away.

"Obviously, we also work with civil defence and police. Should the untoward happen when we need to hold the ride, we’ve got destinations around the lake where people can gather.”

Mr Dickason says he saw the eruption from his office window and because the mountain was covered in cloud at that stage,it just looked like another cloud peeping out the top.

Civil defence has issued a volcanic activity warning and says light volcanic ash fall can be anticipated downwind of Tongariro and may affect Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty.

Civil defence says more information will come later in the day from the Department of Conservation and other local authorities with up on the mountain.

Air New Zealand says it is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority, the MetService and other authorities to keep up to date with ash movement and forecasts.

General manager airline operations and safety, Captain David Morgan, who is also chief pilot, says they are working with the relevant authorities to safely make adjustments to flight routes to ensure aircraft remain clear of any ash.

Passengers are advised to check the Air NZ website for flight arrivals and departures information.

What a twat! As if you can say or predict how long the eruptions will go on for...they can say this is what happened in 1890 but thats all they can say. To try and predict what will happen based on only one other event ( when this volcano has been forming for hundreds of thousands of years) is just ridiculous. Why not be truthful and say that they have no idea what the future will bring.

Small Pacific island undiscovered

A team of Australian scientists discover that an island in the Pacific, which appears on maps and weather charts, doesn't exist.

Most explorers dream of discovering uncharted territory, but a team of Australian scientists have done the exact opposite. They have found an island that doesn't exist.

The island, named Sandy Island on Google Earth, also exists on marine charts and world maps and allegedly sits between Australia and New Caledonia in the South Pacific.

But when the voyage's chief scientist, Maria Seton, and her crew sailed past where the island should be, they found nothing but blue ocean.

“We became suspicious when the navigation charts used by the ship showed a depth of 1400 metres in an area where our scientific maps and Google Earth showed the existence of a large island,” Dr Maria Seton, a geologist from the University of Sydney, said.

"Somehow this error has propagated through to the world coastline database from which a lot of maps are made."

The missing island has regularly appeared in scientific publications since at least 2000.

"Even onboard the ship, the weather maps the captain had showed an island in this location," Dr Seton said.

Neither the French government - the invisible island would sit within French territorial waters if it existed - nor the ship's nautical charts, which are based on depth measurements, had the island marked on their maps.

Dr Seton had no idea how the island came to be on so many maps, but she is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Steven Micklethwaite from the University of Western Australia said, “We all had a good giggle at Google as we sailed through the island, then we started compiling information about the seafloor, which we will send to the relevant authorities so that we can change the world map.”

The discovery took place onboard the RV Southern Surveyor, Australia's Marine National Facility research vessel, during a 25-day research trip in the eastern Coral Sea.

Large fragments of eastern Australia split from the mainland as the Tasman Sea formed about 100 million years ago, when Australia split apart from the super continent Gondwana, which included Antarctica, India and Africa.

"This dispersed all the continental fragments in the area, which subsided and [went] below sea level," Dr Seton said.

"We went to find those fragments of our country," she said.

The team collected 197 different rock samples, more than 6800km of marine geophysical data and mapped over 14,000sqkm of the ocean floor.

They also recovered limestone, which forms from near surface coral reefs, from a depth of three kilometres.

"That means we've had this massive drowning of the area. That's was a surprising discovery," said Dr Seton.

Business as usual for Tongariro National Park

[link to www.3news.co.nz]

The Conservation Minister is assuring tourists that Mt Tongariro National Park is still open for business despite the mountain erupting for the second time this year.
The Te Maari crater sprang to life for about five minutes on Wednesday, and experts warn it could erupt again at any time.
But MP Kate Wilkinson says that apart from a three day exclusion zone, it is business as usual.
“Only some of the tracks are closed, and if there’s no increase in volcanic activity by say mid next week, they’re confident they’ll reopen that part of the alpine crossing,” she says.
The volcano is still spewing out gas, but scientists say it is not a danger.
Meantime, there has not been any significant volcanic activity at Mt Ruapehu overnight, although ther are still concerns an eruption could happen without warning over the next few days.

Kids scramble as mountain rumbles into life

[link to www.bayofplentytimes.co.nz]

As Mt Tongariro started rumbling, children and trampers on the mountain turned to run, fearing the worst.

Not a second later, a thick grey plume of smoke erupted from Te Maari vent and those closest looked at each other to see what the other was doing.

In one of the school groups on the mountain to walk the Tongariro Crossing, some children cried while others reached for their cameras.

The five-minute eruption sent ash 4km high into the sky without warning and was followed by 15 minutes of volcanic activity, but it was smaller than the August event.

But scientists have predicted that another eruption of similar size could be expected at any time during the next few weeks, though the activity was not expected to escalate.

Paul Cowan, a teacher from Auckland on holiday, was about 1km to 1.5km away from the 1.25pm eruption. He said there was nowhere to run because smoke was coming out of vents all around them.

"It was fantastic but it was actually a bit scary and everyone started running," he said.

Lynn Donovan, a tourist from Ireland, said that after they heard the rumble they turned around and "all of a sudden" a great tower of thick smoke poured from a crater.

"It was a little nerve-racking and some people started running but a guide from another group calmed us all down and told us what was going on," she said.

During the last eruption, the mountain spewed rocks into the air so they were told to be careful, but otherwise they were safe and there was no need to panic.

Principal John Petrie of Gulf Harbour School, which was doing the crossing with a group of 20 Year 8 students and 10 adults, said they didn't hear anything but some of the children started to notice the billowing cloud of rising ash.

"Initially the kids started getting their cameras out and were quite wowed by it, but as it continued to rise it got quite high and then the apprehension started creeping into all of us," Mr Petrie said. "Some of the kids started crying but others were quite captivated by it."

Last night, continued minor eruptive activity meant Mt Tongariro's Volcanic Alert Level remained at 2.

GNS duty volcanologist Nico Fournier said a northeast wind dragged the ash cloud over Lake Taupo. A light dusting of ash yesterday fell across part of State Highway 46 and towards Turangi.

"We're talking a matter of hours not days for it to fall," Dr Fournier said.

Meanwhile, tourism operators were excited about the eruption.

Adrift NZ tour guide Stewart Barclay, who chairs a group of 30 users of Mt Tongariro, said some school groups had cancelled tours but in the long run the eruption would be "fantastic for business".

He said they had been busier this November than the last because of the eruption in August.

"People just love being near it, they come to gawk at a truly active volcano ..."

Great Lake Taupo spokeswoman Leola Abraham said they were trying to focus on the positive impact of the eruption - that it put the region in the international public eye.

And the 8500 people taking part in the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge this weekend shouldn't change their plans - it will still go ahead.

Event director Kay Brake said they were monitoring the situation closely and there were contingency plans in place.

Minister briefed on Tongariro

[link to www.nzherald.co.nz]

The Minister for Conservation has been briefed on the current state of activity at Mount Tongariro.

Kate Wilkinson visited the area yesterday along with Taupo MP Louise Upston following Wednesday's eruption.

DOC and GNS scientists briefed them on possible future scenarios for the mountain's Te Maari crater.

They also met with community leaders to discuss the best way forward to support the community and businesses who rely on tourists coming to the area to walk the currently closed Tongariro Crossing.

Ms Wilkinson says she's pleased to see DOC working hard with GNS to monitor volcanic activity so any re-opening in the future is done without compromising staff or public safety.

Rare algae bloom turns waters near Sydney’s Bondi Beach blood red

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

November 27, 2012 – AUSTRALIA – Tourists heading for world-famous Bondi Beach were left high and dry today after a rare natural phenomenon turned the water blood red. Bondi was among several popular beaches in and around Sydney, Australia, which had to be closed after a huge algae bloom transformed the sea into something resembling a scene from a Jaws movie. But despite the warnings a number of intrepid beachgoers were seen venturing into the water and swimming through the red surface, Ten News Sydney reported. Known as Nocturnal Scintillans or sea sparkle it has no toxic effects but people are still advised to avoid swimming in areas with discoloured water because the algae, which can be high in ammonia, can cause skin irritation. British tourists were among large groups of visitors who were told by lifeguards not to enter the water until the all-clear was given because the algae can irritate the skin and cause other health problems. Ken Roberts, 23, from Birmingham, England said: ‘Perhaps I’m just in the wrong country – I thought the Red Sea was somewhere in Asia.’ Local lifeguard Bruce Hopkins said: ‘It has quite a fishy smell to it. ‘It makes the water look like it has a coating of tomato-sauce coloured oil.’ The algae has already disappointing thousands who had headed to the coast to cool off as the summer Down Under finally gets under way of a prolonged cold period. The New South Wales (NSW) Office of Water has been carrying out a series of tests to discover what caused the bloom. One theory is that it was caused by an upwelling of colder nutrient-rich water. –Daily Mail

Major earthquakes can trigger faraway ‘slow-slip’ events

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

November 28, 2012 – GEOLOGY - Major earthquakes might set off incredibly slow earthquakes thousands of miles away, new research suggests. These findings, detailed online Sept. 11 in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Solid Earth, shed light on how earthquake zones might communicate with each other over large distances, scientists added. The cluster of devastating earthquakes that rocked the globe during the past decade from Japan to Sumatra to Haiti is one reason why scientists are investigating whether temblors in different parts of the world are linked to one another. Although research to date suggests that major quakes aren’t likely to trigger other massive quakes around the globe, they can set off tremors worldwide. Now researchers find that large quakes might also trigger mysterious slow earthquakes thousands of miles away. One kind of slow earthquake known as a slow-slip event can last for weeks, shifting the Earth as much as an ordinary earthquake of magnitude of 7 would in mere moments. The investigators focused on the magnitude 8.8 Maule earthquake that struck Chile in 2010. They found it generated surface waves that, within hours, set off tremors in the Guerrero region of southwestern Mexico 4,140 miles (6,660 kilometers) away. Data from GPS stations also revealed the earth there began moving southward at the same time tremors there began. The tremors and movements of the GPS stations lasted for about six months after the 2010 Chile quake. “Such an observation may indicate that the Maule earthquake triggered a slow-slip event in Guerrero,” said researcher Dimitri Zigone, a seismologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Near Guerrero lies a subduction zone, where a tectonic plate under the Pacific Ocean is diving under the continental North American plate. The seismic energy from Chile apparently increased the stress in the segment of the subduction zone near Guerrero, which may explain the resulting slow-slip event. “The fact large quakes can have effects so far away could be important because it may change the recurrence time between earthquakes in a specific location,” Zigone told OurAmazingPlanet. “Usually we assume that the seismic cycle — the recurrence between earthquakes — is regional, on a single fault system or at a plate boundary, for example. If these large-scale interactions exist, it may indicate that even at large distances, a mega-earthquake can modify the conditions in another region.” -MSNBC

Details of Supervolcano
VEI Index: 7
Name: Reporoa Caldera
Volcano ID: 0401-06-
Country: NZL
Location: Taupo Volcanic Zone
Diameter: ~100 km
Last Eruption: 230,000 years ago

The Reporoa caldera is a 10 km by 15 km caldera in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It formed some 230,000 years ago, in a large eruption that deposited the approximately 100 km3 Kaingaroa Ignimbrites. It contains three rhyolitic lava domes (Deer Hill, Kairuru and Pukekahu) and the active Reporoa geothermal field. The Waiotapu geothermal area lies just north of the caldera rim, while the Broadlands thermal area lies to the south. The Waikato River runs through the southern half of the caldera. In April 2005, a large hydrothermal explosion occurred in a cow paddock within the caldera, creating a 50-metre crater. A similar explosion took place in the area in 1948, and smaller explosions have occurred in the intervening years.

Mystery lights in sky spark UFO claims (+video)

video

Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty have been a hotbed of unusual aerial activity, with multiple sightings of strange phenomena in the region's skies.

On Monday or Tuesday night on October 29 or 30, at least four people at the Challenge petrol station on Malfroy Rd witnessed five glowing orbs move slowly across the road toward Sunset Rd for about 30 seconds before they disappeared behind trees.

A Challenge petrol station employee, who only wanted to be known as Michelle, said she and at least three others watched the orbs, which appeared about 8pm just before dark.

"A customer came in and asked 'can you see that?', we were all wondering what was going on.

"They were all perfectly round with a larger orange-coloured orb leading about four smaller orbs all in a line about the same distance apart. They were moving on an angle before they disappeared behind some trees."

Michelle said the glowing orbs were in the sky about 200m to 300m away from the service station forecourt and they watched them for about 30 seconds.

"There's no way they were lights from a plane, they were too big and were not flashing. Our first thought was it was something military but there was no noise and they were just floating there.

"We were all a bit freaked out but we weren't imagining things. I'm not one to sensationalise things ... I was reading the paper every day to see if anyone else had seen them."

Michelle said they all knew they had seen something strange but she had not talked about it since.

"People might think I'm a bit mad, but I was in the air force and I know what an aeroplane looks like," she said.

In another recent sighting, a Lake Tarawera resident who wished to remain anonymous, said he photographed a bright orange orb as it slowly moved across the lake about two months ago.

The man, who lives on Spenser Rd, said he and his wife watched a colourful floating orb for about five minutes before it floated off to the right of Rainbow Mountain heading toward Tauranga.

"We saw it heading from roughly a southern position heading north low in the sky. It appeared to be a rotating ball with varying colours. It was not along any flights paths that I see airplanes on either.

"It continued going north at a steady, relatively slow speed, so I had time to get out the camera but unfortunately the picture isn't that great."

The man said he was left with a strange feeling he had seen something out of the ordinary.

During a number of separate sightings this month a rural Rotorua resident filmed what he described as a "blinking ufo object and big bright sphere object" as well as a "bright light ufo, strange skies ufo and fireballs".

The man uploaded his films to the video sharing website YouTube identifying himself as horsefarmer1000.

In one of the videos there is also an obvious meteor shower at the end and satellites in the sky. But, there are some floating, flashing lights in the videos which do not look like an aeroplane or helicopter.

One of the videos has had more than 3280 views with the filming taking place on November 4 and November 8.

Horsefarmer1000 declined to be interviewed by The Daily Post but links to his films were sent to New Zealand UFO investigation organisation Ufocus NZ.

Ufocus director Suzanne Hansen said she had watched the videos but said without speaking to the person it was difficult to say what was going on.

"I did not see anything that could not be explained in conventional terms.

"If people believe they have captured a UFO on film, we are able to send it to the United States for photographic data analysis with either a physicist and optical data analyst, or a retired Nasa scientist, who assist Ufocus NZ in our work.

"We think this is a more credible way of ascertaining its veracity than posting it on YouTube."

However, Ms Hansen said the organisation had received some very detailed sighting reports in the Rotorua/Tauranga/Kaimai area in the past year.

"In December 2011 we received a report from a small group of witnesses who observed an object, which was not an aircraft, which came to within 15m of their position and "followed" them for a couple of kilometres.

"In March of this year, we received a report from a scientist who had a similar experience at a Northland beach and who provided an identical description to that given by the December 2011 witnesses.

She said in June, a person onboard an aircraft approaching Tauranga from Rotorua saw a silver/white disc-shaped object at a low altitude above the treetops and in July a retired commercial pilot saw a large silver spherical object accompanied by two white/silver V shaped objects over Tauranga Harbour.

Ms Hansen said there had been numerous reports in the Bay of Plenty and throughout the country, of very large orange balls of light.

"It is interesting to note that when the December 2011 witnesses first sighted an anomalous light, it was a large orange orb. As it came closer they were able to see the object within this orange glow.

"At close proximity the object had "switched off" the glow and the witnesses were able to see considerable detail."

Ms Hansen said the organisation had received more UFO sighting reports this year than in any other year.

If you have had an encounter or sighting of a UFO you can contact Ms Hansen here.

map

December 2, 2012 – VANUATU - A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake has struck off the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, but no tsunami warning was issued. Seismologists say the quake had a relatively shallow depth of 34 kilometers. The quake struck just before midday local time, and was centered 108 kilometers northwest of the capital, Port Vila, the United States Geological Survey said. There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury. Vanuatu lies on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a zone of frequent seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates. It has been rocked by several large quakes in recent years, averaging about three magnitude 7.0 or above incidents every year without any major damage. –NST

Earthquake strikes Romania: An earthquake occurred on Saturday night in Vrancea region of eastern Romania, with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, according to Romania’s National Institute for Earth Physics. There are no reports of casualties, injuries or major material damage for now. The quake struck at 10:52 p.m. local time (GMT 2052) at a depth of 67 km, near Reghiu of Vrancea County, some 210 kilometers northeast of Romania’s capital Bucharest. Yet, according to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale and the epicenter is at a depth of 93 kilometers. The quake was felt in Bucharest. Vrancea is one of the most active seismic areas in Europe. It is known for its intermediate-depth (70-200 kilometers) earthquakes, which can reach a magnitude of 7.0-7.8. This earthquake reminds people of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake in March 1977 that killed 1,600 people in Romania and damaged 8,500 buildings. -EE

Heavy seismicity: Alaska as also experienced it share of earthquakes over the weekend and they don’t appear to be slowing down any. A 5.1 quake struck off the coast of Central America. A 5.0 earthquake struck Tonga. A magnitude 4.5 hit Iran three hours ago, 4.6 slapped Romania, Hawaii received a very mild jolt today. Indonesia was hit with a mild 4.6 magnitude seismic, South America had a 4.5 quake, a 4.4 hit Afghanistan and Alaska took it last hit nine hours ago with a 4.1 earthquake. An earthquake also hit the Alaska region earlier on Saturday with Alaskan’s reporting that this quake seemed to last for several minutes and was one of the strongest quakes they have encountered The earth moved Saturday in the Jujuy Province of Argentina, the US Geological Survey announced in an emailed alert. China received a fair jolt near Sichuan, China, with a 4.8 ground rumble, and Baja California, near Mexico was toughed with a 2.7 quake. As it stands, there have been 20 earthquakes today, 207 earthquakes in the past 7 days, 822 earthquakes in the past month and 17,474 earthquakes in the past year. –Guardian

Experts warn dangerous build-up of magma occurring at many of Japan’s 110 active volcanoes

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

December 3, 2012 – JAPAN – Japan should brace for a catastrophic volcanic eruption at some point, say experts, citing a massive buildup of magma at many of the nation’s 110 active volcanoes. The last particularly serious eruption in Japan occurred in 1914, when Mount Sakurajima in southern Kagoshima Prefecture blew its top. According to study by volcanologists, Japan, which lies on the Pacific Rim of Fire, has been shaken by more than 1,000 volcanic eruptions over the past 2,000 years. “The possibility of a major eruption in the future is real,” said Yoichi Nakamura, a professor of volcanology at Utsunomiya University who has been analyzing volcanic eruptions with a team of researchers. To be classified as active, a volcano must have erupted within the past 10,000 years or still be spewing gases, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The active volcanoes include sites in the disputed Northern Territories off northeastern Hokkaido, as well as undersea volcanoes. Of the 110 active volcanoes, the agency monitors activity of the 47 around the clock to detect signs of an imminent eruption. When offshore Mount Sakurajima erupted, it spewed out so much lava that it created a land bridge with the Osumi Peninsula. Volcanic ash even fell on eastern Japan. The researchers said seismic activity surged at 20 active volcanoes around Japan, including Mount Fuji, after the magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake struck last year. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes on record. It struck with such force that the Japanese land mass shifted. Over the past century, volcanic eruptions around the world were apparently triggered by magnitude-9.0 or stronger earthquakes that struck several years earlier. Nakamura also is involved with the nonprofit Vocanological Society of Japan. He said the study was intended to help local officials prepare for a contingency resulting from a major eruption by assessing the risks posed by volcanoes around the country. Particularly worrisome, he said, was a lack of data pointing to a reduction in magma. In the absence of a really huge eruption for a century suggested there was a massive buildup of magma, which at some point will inevitably spew from a volcano with tremendous force. According to the study, 1,162 eruptions have occurred in Japan over the past 2,000 years. Of these, 52 were major events that spewed a massive volume of ash and lava over a short period. It amounts to a large-scale eruption occurring every 38 years. Records show that three volcanic eruptions in the 17th century, including one at Mount Hokkaido-Komagadake in Hokkaido in 1640, spewed out the equivalent of 1 billion cubic meters of ash and lava. Two similar eruptions occurred in the 18th century, one of which involved Mount Fuji in 1707. The study showed that relatively large eruptions occurred 124 times. There were 562 instances of medium-scale eruptions, or one every 3.6 years. These included the eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugendake in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1991 and the eruption of Mount Usuzan in Hokkaido in 2000. Of the 1,162 eruptions, the 47 volcanoes consistently monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency represent nearly 90 percent of the activity, or 1,012 of those events. Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture is the most active volcano with 167 recorded eruptions, followed by Mount Asama straddling Nagano and Gunma prefectures, at 124; Mount Sakurajima, at 91; Mount Izu-Oshima in Tokyo, at 77; and Mount Kirishima straddling Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, at 70. Mount Fuji has erupted 38 times. –AJW
