Fracking Causes Earthquake Swarm In Australia Nov 29, 2012

Published on Dec 1, 2012 by thebarcaroller
A strong earthquake swarm produced 26 individual earthquakes Near Innamincka, South Australia from Nov 25-29, 2012, the highest measured to Magnitude 3.9, the only other earthquake activity in the region was in 2003 where a similar earthquake swarm occurred where it was revealed that the government permitted a coal seam mining project in spite of a magnitude 2.7 earthquake that occurred during early-phase drilling, according to industry experts. Both earthquake swarms are a direct result of fracking.

Planetary Alignment / X-Flare Watch Dec 17-18, 2012

Published on Aug 30, 2012 by thebarcaroller
Two strong celestial alignments on December 17-18 which involve (Jupiter-Earth-Mercury) and (Venus-Mercury-Sun) as well as combined astrological aspects and harmonic resonance from a Ceres-Earth conjunction may indicate a potential for a large solar event (X-Class Solar Flare or Major Solar Eruption) or a 7.5 Magnitude earthquake on either one of these forecasted days.

This is my own analysis using Heliocentric Imagery, geocentric portrait and harmonic translations to predict possible effects here on earth. i am using astrology in this forecast in-conjunction with lunar modulations.

Aprox 77 minutes ago a quake in new Zealand started a chain reaction of quakes that has woken the dormant volcanoes that are Washington state with a notable jolt ... Waking the giant ... With the current state that this continent is In ( with the sink hole plus seismic activity ) and the storm front. In fact this monster storm could be a geological storm with lava landslide floods avalanches and what could end up ripping the country in twain ... The quake that started this ironiclly struck Washington state 69 minutes after the new Zealand quake ... That in theory mean the current of the molten material is traveling at a speed of more than a thousand miles an hour ( 3500mph) ten times the speed of yesterday's quake that hit the new Madrid . The difference is the depth ... Yesterdays were a combined depth of 960 km where as today's were a combine depth of 360km. The depth determines the direction of the current the magma flows ... Yesterdays slid under the Nevada faults .. But today it hit right above the 500km line ... Sending the current north and into the volcanic mountains of Washington .
If any body can even see the top of mt Rainer ... ( weather out there right now is historic) check and see is there smoke rising from the top . If there is ..... Get out of there .

Tectonic summary by USGS

Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate

The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.

Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 M8.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 M8.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults’ strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again.

North of New Zealand, the Australia-Pacific boundary stretches east of Tonga and Fiji to 250 km south of Samoa. For 2,200 km the trench is approximately linear, and includes two segments where old (>120 Myr) Pacific oceanic lithosphere rapidly subducts westward (Kermadec and Tonga). At the northern end of the Tonga trench, the boundary curves sharply westward and changes along a 700 km-long segment from trench-normal subduction, to oblique subduction, to a left lateral transform-like structure.

Australia-Pacific convergence rates increase northward from 60 mm/yr at the southern Kermadec trench to 90 mm/yr at the northern Tonga trench; however, significant back arc extension (or equivalently, slab rollback) causes the consumption rate of subducting Pacific lithosphere to be much faster. The spreading rate in the Havre trough, west of the Kermadec trench, increases northward from 8 to 20 mm/yr. The southern tip of this spreading center is propagating into the North Island of New Zealand, rifting it apart. In the southern Lau Basin, west of the Tonga trench, the spreading rate increases northward from 60 to 90 mm/yr, and in the northern Lau Basin, multiple spreading centers result in an extension rate as high as 160 mm/yr. The overall subduction velocity of the Pacific plate is the vector sum of Australia-Pacific velocity and back arc spreading velocity: thus it increases northward along the Kermadec trench from 70 to 100 mm/yr, and along the Tonga trench from 150 to 240 mm/yr. Trampers Flock to Tongario after Eruption

Opening ceremony at Mangatepopo 29 November 2012

Tourism operators in the Tongariro National Park are attributing a jump in visitor numbers to the recent volcanic activity.

Just over a week after the latest eruption, the Tongariro northern circuit track and part of the Tongariro alpine crossing have reopened today.

Tourism operators have reported a huge spike in business since the earlier eruption in August and say the volcanic activity has been great promotion for the tracks.

Mount Tongariro's eruption on November 21 saw flights cancelled, a Civil Defence alert issued, a three-kilometre exclusion zone set up around the mountain and Department of Conservation tracks closed within a three-kilometre radius of the crater.

The mountain is currently on a Volcanic Alert Level of one, which indicates signs of volcano unrest, and GeoNet indicates Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu continue to be closely monitored for renewed activity.

The section of the crossing from Oturere Junction to Ketetahi Road remains closed at this stage and a protective restriction remains in place around the highest risk area within 1km of the Upper Te Maari Crater.

All other facilities, activities and alternative walking tracks are fully operational within the 80,000ha Tongariro National Park.

Tongariro Northern Circuit to re-open

The Department of Conservation plans to re-open the Tongariro Northern Circuit and part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on Thursday.

New signage and barriers will be in place in time for the tracks to Emerald Lakes and Oturere Valley to be open Thursday morning.

DOC’s Ruapehu Area Manager Jonathan Maxwell says staff have been working continually since last week’s event at Te Maari, looking at the science and potential hazards to have a current risk assessment and the confidence to re-open. GNS has also provided some advice.

“Visitor and staff safety in and around the park is paramount and that has always been our priority.

“The tracks being re-opened can not only be used safely but will provide visitors with an amazing enhanced national park experience.

“Tongariro National Park has world heritage status for it’s natural and cultural values. It is an active and living landscape and the recent events have left more exciting active features for people to view, film and photograph,” Jonathan says.

“Volcanic landscapes around the world including Tongariro are first class tourism venues attracting thousands of visitors each year. Tongariro with this recent activity may have just jumped up the world-wide must do list, to perhaps the top,” he says.

The department has continued to work closely with Ngāti Tūwharetoa through local hapu Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro, and community and business leaders to re-open tracks as the eruption risk management area has been revised.

A blessing ceremony, Te Whakapainga (the journey to make right), will take place at Mangatepopo Road car park, on Wednesday in preparation for the re-opening to the public.

Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro spokesman Te Ngaehe Wanikau says the mountain has spoken again. It is very important that we have listened to what the maunga has said, and before we re-open the maunga (mountain) and the whenua (land) to the people, that we respect and honour it with a blessing.

A Rāhui (protective restriction) remains in place around Upper Te Maari Crater area having been placed there in mid October by Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro. The Rāhui upholds a traditional Maori custom (Tikanga Maori) to ensure the safety and protection of all people entering the region. The Rāhui covers the highest risk area within 1km of the crater and remains closed by DOC.

Members of Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro hapu will continue to support the re-opening by welcoming trampers to the maunga and whenua at Mangatepopo car park. They will talk to visitors about the cultural significance of the maunga (mountain) and the land (whenua) as well as sharing some of the stories of our people says Te Ngaehe.

The Eruption Risk Management zoning has been reduced to a distance of 3kms around Upper Te Maari Crater. Facilities remain closed within this area, with the exception of the short distance of track to Emerald Lakes, the junction of the track in Oturere Valley, and down into Oturere Valley. This means that people can traverse the volcano via the Tongariro Northern Circuit around Mt Ngauruhoe.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing as a whole will take longer to re-open with the section of track from Oturere Junction to Ketetahi Road remaining closed at this stage. It will be re-opened as soon as the current risks are assessed by DOC as being sufficiently low to ensure public safety. This assessment will be based on the probability of significant hazards from further eruptions.

“We are working with the whole community – iwi, hapu, business leaders, tourism operators and agencies –to provide safe public access to one of New Zealand’s most special places,” Jonathan says.

All other facilities, activities and alternative walking tracks are fully operational within the 80,000ha Tongariro National Park.

Plans to reopen part of Mt Tongariro Thursday

Sam Thompson, Newstalk ZB November 26, 2012, 2:34 pm

The Department of conservation is planning to reopen part of Mount Tongariro to the public on Thursday. The Tongariro Crossing was evacuated after the Te Maari Crater erupted briefly on Wednesday.

DOC Spokesman Jonathan Maxwell says the risk of another volcanic eruption has been further downgraded by GNS Science.

"We're planning to open part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, up to Red Crater and Emerald Lake and that will include the northern circuits. That's a great opportunity for concessionaires and public to get back in there, but staying outside that exclusion zone."

VOLCANIC ALERT BULLETIN: TONG – 2012/34
TONGARIRO VOLCANO
Volcanic Alert Level: 1 (changed from Level 2)
Aviation Colour Code: Yellow (no change)

1.30 pm Monday 26th November 2012

Volcanic Alert Level lowered to Level 1, activity low at Tongariro.

No further volcanic activity has occurred since the eruption on Wednesday. Gas flux has decreased and seismic activity remains low. GNS Science continues to closely monitor the situation. GNS volcanologist Brad Scott said; “GNS Science has now lowered the Volcanic Alert Level from Level 2 to Level 1. This is based on the lack of further eruptions, no volcanic ash in the plume, decrease in gas output and continuing minor seismic activity. Conditions are now similar to before the November 21 eruption. The Aviation Colour Code remains at Yellow”.

While we were able to recognise the onset of the state of unrest at Te Maari, we cannot recognise useful precursors to eruptions like last week. Over the next week, the scenario considered most likely is that there may be further eruptions and these could occur with no warning. Despite the reduced gas output a gas odour can expected downwind from Tongariro.

Background
GNS Science usually measures volcanic gas output from a plane. Gas sensors installed inside the aircraft can detect and quantify the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). Successful gas flights are dependent on suitable weather conditions. Such conditions are often not very favourable at Tongariro. The Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) sensors can be operated from a vehicle driving along a road beneath the plume, but we do not obtain such a complete data set as flying. Yesterday’s Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) measurements were vehicle based. Examination of the ash confirms there are small amounts of fresh volcanic glass in the eruption deposit, being consistent with the inferred presence of molten material at shallow depth below Te Maari. This is consistent with other observations from the August eruption and observations since then like the gas flux. We do not see evidence for substantial recharge of the system beneath the Upper Te Maari crater. GNS Science uses a range of tools to monitor volcanoes. Seismometers record earthquakes, GPS stations record ground swelling. Acoustics sensors record air-waves such as those produced by an eruption. A new acoustic sensor was added at on Tongariro on Friday.

The Volcanic Alert Level ranges from 0 to 5 and defines the current status at a volcano. Level 1 indicates volcanic unrest, with departures from background levels. Aviation Colour Codes are based on four colours and are intended for quick reference only in the international civil aviation community. Code Yellow indicates that volcanic activity has decreasedsignificantly but continues to be closely monitored.

24 November 2012

The Conservation Minister is assuring tourists that Mt Tongariro National Park is still open for business despite the mountain erupting for the second time this year. The Te Maari crater sprang to life for about five minutes on Wednesday, and experts warn it could erupt again at any time. But MP Kate Wilkinson says that apart from a three day exclusion zone, it is business as usual. “Only some of the tracks are closed, and if there’s no increase in volcanic activity by say mid next week, they’re confident they’ll reopen that part of the alpine crossing,” she says. The volcano is still spewing out gas, but scientists say it is not a danger. Meantime, there has not been any significant volcanic activity at Mt Ruapehu overnight, although there are still concerns an eruption could happen without warning over the next few days. RadioLIVE

Recent Seismicity Offshore Gisborne Region

[link to info.geonet.org.nz]

For those of you following current New Zealand seismicity on GeoNet Rapid, you might have noticed a number of recent events just off-shore of the North Island, eastwards of Tolaga Bay.
This region of the North Island is one place where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Australian Plate. It is common for this region to experience very shallow earthquakes in the overlying Australian Plate, deeper events in the subducting 'slab' of the Pacific Plate, or intermediate depth earthquakes on the interface between the two. Since October 1, GeoNet has located four events in the region with magnitudes over 4.0. This swarm-type activity is not uncommon in the area. In the past few years there have been a few periods in which seismic activity was such that it could be considered a swarm. Swarms are different than typical mainshock-aftershock sequences in that there is no obvious mainshock. In a typical swarm, a region experiences numerous similarly-sized events in a short period of time.

The area between Mahia and Tolaga Bay has had three swarms since 2009. Prior to the current activity, the most recent swarm was in April 2010. The global seismology community is conducting ongoing research to determine the underlying physical mechanism for these types of earthquakes. Previous swarms have been linked to recently discovered slow-slip events (SSE) along the Hikurangi margin. The questions we are attempting to answer are:

Are the swarms related to a response in the subducting plate to changing stresses caused by slow slip along the plate interface?
Do they result from breaking isolated 'asperities' (strong local features on the fault surface) embedded in the surrounding weak slow-slip area?
Are they are an upper plate response to changing stresses related to the SSE?
The most recent swarm has noticeable differences from the 2009 and 2010 sequences. Both of those swarms were close in time and space to documented slow-slip events. The slow-slip events were recognised by a change in the position of continuously recording GPS receivers that are part of the GeoNet network. Currently, GPS data show that there is no known SSE associated with the current activity. The epicentres of the events are located slightly farther offshore than the 2010 swarm. This difference in location could prove to be significant in understanding the implications of the recent earthquakes.

Earthquake locations can be much more accurately determined when the events occur within the seismic network rather than outside of it. Currently, our ability to provide precise locations for these offshore events is limited because we are reliant on land-based seismometers. As part of a joint research project between GNS Science and the Earthquake Research Institute (University of Tokyo), four ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) have been deployed offshore in this region. These research OBS do not deliver real-time data, so we will have to wait for the data to be retrieved during a servicing mission in April 2013. These data will allow us to provide very accurate hypocentral locations, with the main benefit being the improved depth accuracy. This is necessary to understand in which part of the subduction system the events are occurring and ultimately to help us refine our model of earthquake hazard along the active Hikurangi Margin.

While there is still only a minor risk of an earthquake capable of generating a tsunami, residents and visitors to the coast should remember to seek higher ground if there is strong earthquake shaking (i.e. it is hard to stand up) or weak, rolling earthquake shaking of unusually long duration (i.e. a minute or more).

Major study finds ice sheet loss at both poles increasing

[link to thewatchers.adorraeli.com]

In a landmark study published on Thursday, November 29, 2012 in the journal Science, 47 researchers from 26 laboratories report the combined rate of melting for the ice sheets covering Greenland and Antarctica has increased during the last 20 years. Together, these ice sheets are losing more than three times as much ice each year (equivalent to sea level rise of 0.04 inches or 0.95 millimeters) as they were in the 1990s (equivalent to 0.01 inches or 0.27 millimeters). About two-thirds of the loss is coming from Greenland, with the rest from Antarctica.

An international team of experts supported by NASA and ESA has combined data from multiple satellites and aircraft to produce the most comprehensive and accurate assessment to date of ice sheet losses in Greenland and Antarctica and their contributions to sea level rise.

This rate of ice sheet losses falls within the range reported in 2007 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The spread of estimates in the 2007 IPCC report was so broad, however, it was not clear whether Antarctica was growing or shrinking. The new estimates, which are more than twice as accurate because of the inclusion of more satellite data, confirm both Antarctica and Greenland are losing ice. Combined, melting of these ice sheets contributed 0.44 inches (11.1 millimeters) to global sea levels since 1992. This accounts for one-fifth of all sea level rise over the 20-year survey period. The remainder is caused by the thermal expansion of the warming ocean, melting of mountain glaciers and small Arctic ice caps, and groundwater mining.

The study was produced by an international collaboration — the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE) — that combined observations from 10 satellite missions to develop the first consistent measurement of polar ice sheet changes. The researchers reconciled differences among dozens of earlier ice sheet studies by carefully matching observation periods and survey areas. They also combined measurements collected by different types of satellite sensors, such as ESA’s radar missions, NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and the NASA/German Aerospace Center’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE).

“What is unique about this effort is that it brought together the key scientists and all of the different methods to estimate ice loss,” said Tom Wagner, NASA’s cryosphere program manager in Washington. “It’s a major challenge they undertook, involving cutting-edge, difficult research to produce the most rigorous and detailed estimates of ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica to date. The results of this study will be invaluable in informing the IPCC as it completes the writing of its Fifth Assessment Report over the next year.”

Professor Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom coordinated the study, along with research scientist Erik Ivins of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Shepherd said the venture’s success is because of the cooperation of the international scientific community and the precision of various satellite sensors from multiple space agencies.

“Without these efforts, we would not be in a position to tell people with confidence how Earth’s ice sheets have changed, and to end the uncertainty that has existed for many years,” Shepherd said.

The study found variations in the pace of ice sheet change in Antarctica and Greenland.

“Both ice sheets appear to be losing more ice now than 20 years ago, but the pace of ice loss from Greenland is extraordinary, with nearly a five-fold increase since the mid-1990s,” Ivins said. “In contrast, the overall loss of ice in Antarctica has remained fairly constant with the data suggesting a 50-percent increase in Antarctic ice loss during the last decade.”

Rarotonga

[link to www.pacificislandtravel.com]

Since Rarotonga is the youngest island in the Cook Islands southern group it is physically unlike its other volcanic neighbors where erosion and periodic submersions have reduced mountains to gentle hills. Rarotonga's central massif is the eroded remains of a once mighty volcanic pyramid whose crags now form sawtooth peaks and razorback ridges covered with tropical jungle. These are separated by streams running down steep valleys.

The island stands 14,750 feet (4500m) above the ocean floor. It is 20 miles (32k) in circumference. At a depth of 13,000 feet (4000m) the volcano is some 31 miles (50k) in diameter. The highest peak is 2140 feet (658m) above sea level and the island is surrounded by a lagoon which extends several hundred yards to the reef which then slopes steeply to deep water.

the nz volcano graphs are not looking good, a lot of red and other colour changes are appearing on quite a few of them

this usually means a large nz or pacific quake is imminent

Malabar beach glows blue following red algae invasion

[link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

December 4, 2012 – AUSTRALIA – After the eastern beaches coastline resembled the Red Sea last Tuesday, the “night lantern” visited Sydney’s Malabar beach that evening. These photos have not been digitally enhanced – in fact, photographer Dr David Psaila said the water was an even more spectacular color blue than that shown in these images, the Southern Courier reports. “The organism responsible, Noctiluca Scintillans known as “night lantern” is very aptly named, as it will luminescent a bright blue when it is disturbed by waves,” he said. The Chifley scientist said the red algae that crept along the east coast last week contained a chemical called luciferin which was a common protein found in bioluminescent animals. “It’s a chemical reaction that causes light,” he said. “It is often found in deep sea creatures and is the exact same chemical that causes fire flies to glow.”Dr Psaila said although he had seen this effect before but never to this degree. “The reason why there are probably not seeing it at other beaches is that those beaches would have a lot more lights around so it’s really hard to see whereas at Malabar – you see the waves rolling in and they are all blue,” he said. –News
