Hi Tauranga, You miss out because you are on a concrete slab..:-). A friend near here also slept thru it.. she is on a slab foundation.
We were in bed, and it was long and strong.. we were just lying there talking about it when towards the end there was an increase and a big lurch and things started falling of the bookshelf.. alarm clock, a few books and ornaments.. its a tall shelf and was rocking. ( it is tied to the wall..) and that go us jumping out of bed to try and save things.. but it stopped.

Interesting that you see a building pattern. I will pay more attention. Certainly got a wakeup call....:-).

This morning's magnitude 5.8 quake was felt widely throughout the country not only because of its size but because of the tectonic plate it happened on.

The 5.8 quake struck at 7.19am and was felt as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Southland.

It was 175 kilometres deep and centred 20km south east of Tokoroa, in the region of the Pacific Plate, one of the most active tectonic belts in the world.

It is not unusual for quakes of this magnitude and depth to occur on that plate boundary in the Tokoroa region, GeoNet duty officer, seismologist Anna Kaiser, said.

It was typical for such quakes to be felt throughout the country and particularly on the east coast, she said.

"It's typical with these types of earthquakes because it's occurring within the subducting slab. The waves travel along this material which means it can be felt at the surface or throughout quite a wide area."

A 7.3 quake which triggered a one-metre high tsunami in Japan yesterday was understood to also on the Pacific plate margin, Kaiser said.

New Zealand's 5.8 quake has been followed by at least 10 smaller tremors in the same region.

Nearly 10,000 people reported feeling the 5.8 quake on the GeoNet website.

A Greymouth resident described the quake as a "constant rolling motion", which lasted for about 10 seconds.

Amber, who is based in Hawke's Bay, said her kids rolled a marble down the hallway, so she assumed the piles had moved as well as the house.

Peter Fraser, based in Belmont Hills in Wellington, said it felt like a digger had gone past the house, and Laurel Baird, in nearby Tawa, said it felt like a huge truck at first, but then got "louder and louder".

"Then the rolling began. It felt like a long time," Baird said.

The quake wasn't described as violent, but people have said beds shook against walls, some ornaments fell from shelves and they were frustrated at being awake - having hoped for a Saturday sleep in.

The magnitude 5.8 quake was one of dozens of quakes, ranging from magnitude 1.2 to 5.8, so far today, according to GeoNet. Most would have been unnoticed but GeoNet described some as weak and the 5.8 as moderate.

GNS head of volcanology Gill Jolly said there was no concern that this morning's quakes would increase the risk of an eruption at either Ruapehu or Tongariro.

A swarm of earthquakes beneath Tongariro preceded the August eruption and a series of quakes have also occurred near Ruapahu in recent months, but seem to be dying down, Jolly said.

It was felt widely throughout New Zealand, particularly in the central North Island and in Wellington, where people reported it as being moderate or strong, GeoNet reported.

It was felt as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Southland, where it was described as "light".

Rachael Hurrell wrote on the Manawatu Standard Facebook page: "Felt in Palmy. I always fly outta bed coz you never know if it will intensify. Paranoid with good reason, we moved from Chc for less action!"

Five of those quakes have been centred near Tokoroa.

A 3.7 tremor which struck just four minutes after the 5.8 quake, was also widely felt throughout the North Island. It was centred 15km east of Tokoroa and was 198km deep.

Five more quakes have followed, another magnitude 2.6 quake was centred just north of Tokoroa and a 2.9 quake which struck at 7.31am was 15km south of Tauranga.

Smaller quakes were centred near Whanganui and Murupara.

Whoa, I dreamed about all of this when i was napping around 11 pm est. Had no idea anything was actually going on over there. No proof to show anyone but I'm pretty weirded out right now.

there are lots of people all over the world having the same doom dreams as each other

including lots of children

there must be a reason for this

either it is collective unconscious awareness on a spiritual level of what is to come to pass soon

or it is some sort of collective programming that is being implemented by tptb, via our dreams..

i am unsure which it is, but i do think that tptb are very likely using the whole 2012 doom thing to their advantage, to herd up the sheeple into frightened submission

the 2012 thing is much bigger than just the mayan prophesy which i believe was prophesicing massive changes to our sun and therefore our solar system, etc

but it wasnt just the mayans who went to immense trouble to leave a message to humanity at this time, other cultures also tried to leave timeless warnings for us to recognise now

The island of Rarotonga in the southern Pacific is the emergent summit of a Pliocene - Pleistocene volcanic complex built by effusive and pyroclastic eruptions of mainly mafic magma. Petrographically the basaltic rock types are ankaramite and basalt, which range in chemical composition from alkali basalt to nephelinite. Phenocryst assemblages suggest two igneous series, one with a relatively simple equilibrium assemblage of olivine, titanian augite and magnetite, and one with olivine, diopside-augite and titanian augite in which the phenocrysts show disequilibrium textures. These variations reflect fractionation, assimilation, and recharge processes in the upper part of the magmatic system that produced the volcano. The final stages of volcanism at Rarotonga were pyroclastic eruptions of phonolites and effusive eruptions of foidal phonolites, both representing late stage fractionation products. Detailed mapping, together with geochemical work, has prompted a revision of the stratigraphy of the island based on the concept of a single cycle of magmatic activity rather than the Hawaiian style multi-phase evolution favoured by earlier workers. and what do you think about what looks like regular volcanic activity at kermadec (btw it looks steamy there again today, which it often does, this steaminess showing on the webcam seems to correlate to the volcanic episodes that show on the graphs very frequently)

A strong and deep 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck North Island of New Zealand on December 7, 2012 at 18:19 UTC. Epicenter was located 18 km (11 miles) SE of Tokoroa, New Zealand, 27 km (16 miles) SW of Rotorua, New Zealand and 39 km (24 miles) N of Taupo, New Zealand at coordinates 38.334°S, 176.044°E. Recorded depth by USGS was 167.2 km (103.9 miles). Both USGS and EMSC reported magnitude 6.3. EMSC reported depth of 146 km.

Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate

The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most seismically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.

Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 M8.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 M8.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults’ strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again.

North of New Zealand, the Australia-Pacific boundary stretches east of Tonga and Fiji to 250 km south of Samoa. For 2,200 km the trench is approximately linear, and includes two segments where old (>120 Myr) Pacific oceanic lithosphere rapidly subducts westward (Kermadec and Tonga). At the northern end of the Tonga trench, the boundary curves sharply westward and changes along a 700 km-long segment from trench-normal subduction, to oblique subduction, to a left lateral transform-like structure.
