Blurry photos aren't very conclusive, especially when taken from different cameras and locations. But, take a photo of Venus, one of Jupiter, and one of the mystery object, at the same time and place with the same camera, and that'd be something to work with.

August 7, 2012 – ITALY - Strombolian activity continues at varying levels. Following a phase of weak activity during 4-6 Aug, an increase of activity was observed at the Bocca Nuova during the night 6-7 Aug. Also in Italy, the activity at Stromboli (Eolian Islands) has been at relatively high levels over the past days. The number and size of explosions from the summit vents has increased. Popocatépetl in Mexico: About 1 explosion occurs per hour, and strong glow is visible at night. A relatively powerful eruption late on 6 Aug sent ash to up to 30,000 ft (10 km) altitude.–Volcano Discovery

August 7, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – Ash from New Zealand’s Mount Tongariro covers houses and farmland in this still image taken from video, August 7. A New Zealand volcano dormant for more than a century has spewed boulders and spread an ash cloud over the center of the country, disrupting air traffic but causing no other damage or injuries. A volcano quiet for more than a century erupted in a New Zealand national park, spreading thick ash for several miles and causing some residents to evacuate their homes. Some domestic flights were canceled Tuesday. Mount Tongariro spewed ash and rocks for about 30 minutes late Monday night after a few weeks of increased seismic activity. It didn’t cause any injuries or damage in the sparsely populated central North Island region. Tongariro National Park has three active volcanos, is a popular tourist destination and was the backdrop for many scenes in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. Some residents left their homes as a precaution, and authorities temporarily closed roads. National carrier Air New Zealand canceled or delayed domestic flights to towns near the mountain, though by Tuesday afternoon, it said it was resuming service to locations where the ash cloud had cleared. No international flights were affected. Police said a witness to the eruption described flashes and explosions followed by a cloud of ash coming from a hole in the north face of the mountain. The Department of Conservation said three hikers were staying in a hut on the opposite slope of Mount Tongariro when it erupted but they walked out of the area safely. Steve Sherburn, a volcanologist at the government agency GNS Science, said the eruption spread a layer of ash one or two inches thick for several miles. He said he’d heard reports of ash traveling on wind currents to coastal towns 60 miles away. He said the eruption was likely caused by steam pressure building within the mountain. The nation’s civil defense ministry said eruption activity was subsiding though it still urged caution for people who were in the vicinity of the volcano. The park has closed hiking trails and sleeping huts on the mountain for now. -CSM

Aug 8 2012 - White Island update
Meanwhile, at the other erupting volcano...

A darker plume was visible this morning at White Island.
Tremor has dropped sharply overnight at around 11:30 pm. It is unclear if there was an explosion associated with it - there is some acoustic signal on our instruments, however it's not clear if it is wind noise or not.

There was another short burst of tremor around 3 am and again some kind of acoustic signal.

The Crater Rim camera appears to be splattered with mud/ash this morning so it seems there has been some kind of burp.

The plume out of the crater lake from the Factory camera also appears darker and maybe more ash rich.

It appears the nature of activity at White Island might be changing somewhat.

Around 11:30 pm on August 7 volcanic tremor at White Island sharply decreased to levels seen prior to the current episode of unrest in late July. A few hours after this drop in tremor, the colour of the plume changed from white to light brown, indicating more ash is now in the plume. Visual observations in recent days show that a small cone is being built in the lake, around the main area of degassing.

This is the first time ash has been produced from White Island since 2000 and may represent the start of a new phase of activity at White Island.

Visitors to White Island are now at the highest level of risk since the end of the 2000 eruptions. Additional hazards to visitors to the island now include the health effects of ash and acid gas exposure, including respiratory issues, skin and eye sensitivity to acid gases. These hazards increase significantly towards the Crater Lake rim. Eruptions can occur at any time with little or no warning. We advise a high level of caution should be taken, if visiting the island.

The ashfall prediction plot for 6:00 pm today indicates where volcanic ash may be deposited if ash continues to be produced from the volcano.

GNS volcanologists plan to visit the island this week to assess the situation and undertake further sampling and measurements.

What to do in a volcanic eruption
Active craters and the near-vent effects of Monday night’s eruption at Te Māri craters were observed this morning during an observation flight to Mount Tongariro. Current activity is weak with some steaming vents visible below the cloud level. Explosions at a new vent area below the Upper Te Māri crater have thrown blocks out more than 1.5 km. Current eruptive activity is low level but could re-commence at any time. The Aviation Colour Code is reduced to Yellow, which recognises that activity has decreased but renewed unrest is possible.

A brief period of good weather this morning allowed GNS Science and Department of Conservation scientists to make an observation flight to Mount Tongariro. Seismic activity remains at a low level with only a few small events being recorded today. These observations and current monitoring data do not change the prognosis for future eruptions. Actively steaming vents were visible at a new crater area below Upper Te Māri crater but low cloud prevented any views above this elevation.

No vents have opened in or around the Lower Te Māri crater, or at lower elevations on the mountain. There are no new vents or craters at the Ketetahi thermal area. Previously steaming ground at Ketetahi and Lower Te Māri crater appears more vigorous, but there were no obvious major changes there.

Blocks of old lava and hydrothermally altered lava up to approximately 1 metre size have been ejected by the eruption. There are extensive areas to the east and west of the new vents where falling blocks have formed impact craters in the ground. No burnt vegetation was seen. No steaming hot blocks were visible and all appeared to be angular shapes more typical of existing old rock, rather than fresh lava or scoria. Most blocks were covered by grey ash but many on the western slopes were not, which suggests that they were ejected after the main ash-producing phase of the eruption had finished. Blocks had reached 1.5 km to 2 km from the Te Māri craters area.

A flow of rock and soil debris generated by the eruption partly fills a stream valley draining north-west from Upper Te Māri crater area. The deposit has blocked some stream tributaries but most water appears to be diverted around the edges. Ash has slumped from the banks into this stream valley and in other stream valleys ash has been re-mobilised in slurry flows. No lahars were generated by the eruption.

New rock falls were visible around the walls of the new vent area and Lower Te Māri craters and in some stream valley walls near the craters. This is a sign that significant ground shaking took place during Monday night’s eruption.

August 8, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – The Department of Conservation says three new lakes have been created by Mount Tongariro’s eruption on Monday night. The weather improved enough on Wednesday morning for a helicopter carrying a team of scientists to fly over Te Maari craters for the first time since the eruption. DoC’s Nic Peet says a stream that flows from the crater has been dammed by material from the volcano, forming three new lakes. He says heavy rain may cause the lakes to overflow and for water to head down the mountain. But it is estimated there is only up to 10,000 cubic metres of water that is dammed, which is smaller than the crater lake atop Mount Ruapehu. GNS Science says there was also a debris flow streaming 2 km from the crater that destroyed everything in its path. No further volcanic activity has been noted on Mt Tongariro but steam is still billowing from the Te Maari craters that erupted on Monday night, and authorities remain on alert. Reporting from the base of the mountain on Wednesday morning, a Radio New Zealand reporter said steam was pouring from vents around the craters about one and a half kilometres from Ketetahi Hut. GNS Science says three new vents formed in the eruption. One is thought to be at the northern end of the mountain peak and two are close together at the southern end. Tape and traffic cones are blocking access to the Ketetahi carpark, as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is currently closed, as are four huts on the mountain. Weather conditions improved enough on Wednesday morning to allow an observation flight to go up and give scientists their first proper look at the mountain since the eruption: low cloud had prevented earlier efforts. GNS Science vulcanologist Craig Miller says they hope to gather data that can be compared to data in recorded before the eruption. He says a vehicle on the road below the mountain will also be taking readings from the plume of steam coming off Tongariro to measure the concentration of gas and what type of gases they are. The official threat warning was lifted on Tuesday afternoon, but the mountain is still steaming and scientists say it could erupt again at any time with little or no warning. –Radio New Zealand

The newly-released image, taken by the Suomi NPP satellite, shows the ash plume emanating from Tongariro at 12:55 a.m. New Zealand time on Aug. 7 (12:55 p.m. UTC Aug. 6). This was the volcano's first eruption in 115 years.

The eruption was a short-lived phreatic one, New Zealand volcano monitoring authorities said. hreatic eruptions are stream-driven eruptions that happen when water beneath or above the ground is heated up, potentially causing it to boil and "flash to steam," creating an explosion, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
