Yeah...i think it will be dangerous alright....we are so small here and yet our hazards are huge!

I was thinking maybe Gore and Invercargill. They are virtually earthquake free ( aside of feeling quakes centred elsewhere of course ) and far enough away from the volcanoes... Looking at the main fault line and thinking which parts are subducting where, I would also pick extreme south east areas and extreme north west areas as being safest. Also some altitude and distance from the sea would be safer - perhaps. Scale of events will determine whether there are larger or smaller safe areas, which is why if it must be, I hope for gentle and not what (for example) Taupo is known to be capable of. Must go now. Now Taupo WOULD be doom for NZ! I must go too...but now a little bit of research to post before i leave... Quakes off East Cape, over 3.0 magnitude, Since 01/01/2012 Unfortunately as there are quakes on top of quakes you dont get the true picture of just how many there has been, but definitely shows how compact the area is that the quakes have struck.. [ link to img35.imageshack.us] Its a shame it cant capture the real quantity as well but theres too many that you can't see because they are one on top of the other.
