October 24, 2012 – VIETNAM - A series of tremors measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale broke out in the district at 9:42 pm Monday and lasted for about three seconds, said Le Van Tuan, chief of the district People’s Committee’s Secretariat. Thousands of locals rushed out of their houses in panic after they heard loud blasts and felt the ground shaking, houses’ walls cracking, and things inside the houses falling, Tuan said. “Many items on a table in my house fell down to the floor and my children cried and screamed when hearing explosions that sounded like the sounds of bombings,” he said. This quake could be felt by people living in districts nearby such as Nam Tra My, Tien Phuoc, Phuoc Son and Nong Son, he added. Vu Duc Toan, deputy head of the Hydropower Management Board No. 3, said that the earthquake accelerator installed at the hydropower plant area indicated a ground acceleration of 98 cm/s2. This data has been reported to the Global Physics Institute. The quake’s statistics are being handled by the Institute and the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Toan said. Last night Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong, deputy director of the center, confirmed that the quake was 4.6 degrees and its epicenter was 7 km below ground. This is the strongest quake to hit the area since 1957, the center said. The second strongest quake in the area so far occurred on September 3, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale. As previously reported, the first earthquake observation station in the district was put into operation on October 19. More than 20 quakes have occurred in the region in the past several months. This is the first among five planned stations to be built in the district to monitor such quakes, which experts say have been induced by the plant’s reservoir, authorities said. The station will record all seismic developments of any reservoir-induced earthquakes, irrespective of how minor they are, in the area, said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, head of the Global Physics Institute. -Tuoitrenews

On the more recent maps clicking on an individual icon will open a small popup tag inside the map frame giving the detail information for that quake.
Once you have finished reading that tag you can simply click in the background map to close that tag and select another if you wish.
You can also move the map around inside the frame by clicking and holding down the left button of your mouse on the map itself, rather than having to use the up/down/left and right arrows.

You can see the earthquake maps in various versions, ie map, satellite, terrain and even Google Earth.

At the bottom of each map is text saying "see larger map". This will open a new page with the same map, but with the icons and magnitudes also as a list. The list is in a ascending time order. You can click on an icon on the map or a magnitude number on the list and a detail balloon (tag) will pop up on the map from the location of the event.

From here you can also click on the "View in Google Earth" button which will open the kml file in the real Google Earth rather than inside the Google Maps i-frame. This can be handy when you want to see multiple years events together.
You may have to zoom in on the map if you are looking for details of an icon that is in a cluster.

October 25, 2012 – HAWAII – The past decade of eruptions of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano may have acted as a pressure-relief valve for neighboring Mauna Loa, according to a new model suggesting two of the planet’s biggest volcanoes connect deep underground. Scientists know each of the two Hawaiian volcanoes has its own plumbing —separate, shallow magma chambers. Such chambers are the source of Kilauea’s rising lava lake, which is threatening to spill over. But 50 miles (80 kilometers) down, in a part of the Earth’s mantle layer called the asthenosphere, Mauna Loa and Kilauea are dynamically coupled, said Helge Gonnermann, a professor at Rice University in Houston, who is the lead author of a new study showing the link. “It’s like groundwater in an aquifer or oil in an oil reservoir,” Gonnermann told OurAmazingPlanet. “We know that there is melt that extends beneath both volcanoes. Changes in pressure can be transmitted to both volcanoes.” The Hawaiian Islands are hotspot volcanoes, formed as the Pacific plate moves over a plume of hot magma in the mantle. Pressure changes in the pooled magma in the mantle could rapidly affect both volcanoes, the model indicates. The model helps explains some intriguing observations: When one volcano inflates, the other starts to bulge about six months later. At times, such as in 2005, both volcanoes inflate at the same, GPS data show. The study suggests that Mauna Loa’s and Kilauea’s opposing pattern — when one is active, the other is quiet — occurs because eruptions at one volcano release pressure in the other. The model suggests Mauna Loa, which produced its most recent blast in 1984, had accumulated enough magma for another eruption, but its pressure was relieved by Kilauea’s heightened activity. “The hypothesis coming out of this model is that if we hadn’t seen this increased activity at Kilauea, then we would not have seen this pressure relief,” Gonnermann said. The summit of Kilauea has recently started inflating, giving the researchers a real-world test. “If Kilauea continues to inflate like it is right now, and if our model holds water, we should also see another period of inflation at Mauna Loa in about half a year,” Gonnermann said. The scientists also hope to test the model in other hotspot volcanoes, such as those of the Galapagos. -MSNBC

30 Kiwi students headed out to NZ's northern most territory, the Kermadec Islands (about 1000km NE of Auckland city) on board the HMNZS Canterbury. This trip of a lifetime was organized by the Sir Peter Blake Trust and was hosted by the NZ Navy.
Joined with some of NZ's most outstanding leaders, marine scientists, journalists, TV crew and a virtual field class of thousands. They experienced these remote pristine islands for themselves....I had the privilege of filming their "in water" experience.

First sighting responsible for undersea eruption

New Zealand scientists are investigating active undersea volcanos, north of New Zealand. New images reveal the impacts of a significant eruption on the seafloor.

NIWA research vessel Tangaroa has just mapped the Kermadec volcano that erupted 800 kilometres north east of Tauranga, on 19 July 2012, producing a pumice raft the size of Canterbury.

Tangaroa recently embarked on a 23-day voyage of discovery in the Kermadecs, north of New Zealand, to study the volcanic chain that stretches for 1000 kilometres north from Bay of Plenty.

"When we mapped the area yesterday", says NIWA ocean geology scientist Dr Joshu Mountjoy, "we found a new volcanic cone which has formed on the edge of the volcano, towering 240 metres above the crater rim.
