A 4.4 earthquake jolted the lower North Island early this morning.
The quake, which was centred 30km southwest of Whanganui, struck at 1.44am and had a focal depth of 19 kilometres, the GeoNet website reported.
It was felt throughout the western side of the North Island, between New Plymouth and Wellington, according to reports sent to GeoNet.
Early yesterday morning a 4.7 earthquake struck in the same area..
The earlier quake struck at 2.37am, was 35km deep and centred 25km south-west of Whanganui.

The earthquake struck at 2.37am, was 35km deep and centred 25km south-west of Whanganui. Geonet reported the intensity of the quake as moderate.
The quake was felt in several places around Taranaki including, New Plymouth, Oakura, Waitara, Urenui, Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera.It was reported as far north as Auckland and as far south as Picton.
