believe it or not, we didn't even feel it here (although i was still in bed)

we seem to be in an area that doesn't feel these central north island volcanic quakes, although they are felt up the coast a bit from us

Well this mornings quake was a blinder...
Got woken up by it when i was in bed, whole house shaking for about 30 seconds and about 10 seconds in it got quite violent to the point where me and my partner were about to make a bee-line for door.
Cupboards were shaking but luckily nothing feel down or over.
Curious who else felt this quake? Wbu TGA?

we just dont seem to feel them here, we didnt feel the 6.5 taupo quake a few months ago either, even though that one was also felt in most of the country

December 7, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND - An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.3 struck New Zealand’s North Island today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The temblor’s epicenter was 12 miles (19 km) southeast of the town of Tokoroa and 214 miles (345 km) north-northeast of the capital Wellington. It originated 103 miles (167 km) deep and struck at 7:19 a.m. local time Saturday (1819 UTC Friday), the USGS reports. Earthquakes of this size can cause significant damage, especially with poorly built structures. Even well designed buildings can be damaged or, in some cases, destroyed depending on the severity of the quake and a building’s proximity to the epicenter. Earthquakes of this size are sometimes followed by significant aftershocks. Amber, who is based in Hawke’s Bay, said her kids rolled a marble down the hallway, so she assumed the piles had moved as well as the house. Peter Fraser, based in Belmont Hills in Wellington, said it felt like a digger had gone past the house, and Laurel Baird, in nearby Tawa, said it felt like a huge truck at first, but then got “louder and louder.” It was then, “the rolling began. It felt like a long time,” Baird said. December 7, 2012 – JAPAN - A strong quake centered off northeastern Japan shook buildings as far away as Tokyo on Friday and triggered a one-meter tsunami in an area devastated by last year’s Fukushima disaster, but there were no reports of deaths or serious damage. The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and thousands of coastal residents were ordered to evacuate to higher ground, but the tsunami warning was lifted two hours after the tremor struck. The March 2011 earthquake and following tsunami killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years when the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant was destroyed, leaking radiation into the sea and air. Workers at the plant were ordered to move to safety after Friday’s quake. Tokyo Electric Power Co, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, reported no irregularities at its nuclear plants. All but two of Japan’s 50 nuclear reactors have been idled since the Fukushima disaster as the government reviews safety. The quake measured a “lower 5” in Miyagi prefecture on Japan’s scale of one to seven, meaning there might be some damage to roads and houses that are less quake resistant. The scale measures the amount of shaking and in that sense gives a better idea of possible damage than the magnitude. The quake registered a 4 in Tokyo. The one-meter tsunami hit at Ishinomaki, in Miyagi, at the centre of the devastation from the March 2011 disaster. Five people in the prefecture were slightly injured. “I was in the centre of the city the very moment the earthquake struck. I have the radio on and they say the cars are still stuck in the traffic. I’m planning to stay here for the next couple of hours.” There are vast areas of Ishinomaki that still have not been cleaned up since last year’s tsunami. Many houses lie in ruins, full of rubble. Workers by the shore still sort through thousands of cars that were swamped and destroyed. The cars are piled up and being taken apart for parts and scrap. Narita airport outside Tokyo was back in action after a brief closure for safety checks. There were small tsunamis, measuring in the centimeters, elsewhere near the epicenter. Tokyo, with a population of 12 million, sits on the junction of four tectonic plates: the Eurasian, North American, Philippine and Pacific. Japan earthquake: eyewitness describes shaking buildings

Telegraph reporter Julian Ryall describes how buildings shook for more than a minute as an earthquake struck Japan's east coast.

A tsunami measuring slightly over 3 feet high hit the Ayukawa district of Ishinomaki at 6.02 pm local time, although there were no immediate reports of injuries. More tsunami warnings were in force for the rest of Miyagi Prefecture, as well as Aomori, Fukushima and Iwate prefectures.

Warnings had been issued on television and radio channels immediately after the magniude 7.3 quake struck at 5.18 pm and residents of coastal regions and low-lying areas had been ordered to evacuate to higher ground.

The quake was the most severe since much of north-east Japan was devastated by the magnitude-9 earthquake on March 11, 2012, and inevitably caused concern among local residents.

Train services across much of north-east Japan were suspended for safety checks while aircraft scheduled to land at Sendai Airport - which was severely damaged and flooded after the last earthquake - were diverted to alternative airports.

The operators of the Fukushima nuclear plant reported that the quake had no impact on efforts to bring the crippled reactors under control. It was reported that emergency teams working at the reactors were temporarily evacuated from the site.

Freak tornado kills 3 in Auckland, New Zealand

December 6, 2012 – AUCKLAND – A freak tornado hit Auckland Thursday killing three people and causing “utter devastation” as wild weather ripped apart homes and caused flash flooding in New Zealand’s largest city. The storm, packing gusts of more than 110 kilometers (70 miles) per hour, struck suburban Hobsonville in the afternoon, toppling trees, ripping roofs from houses and sending debris flying. Civil Defense said three people died and seven were hospitalized, with two of the fatalities believed to have been caused by a concrete slab that landed on the cabin of a truck and the other by a falling tree. About 150 homes were badly damaged, many rendered uninhabitable, forcing residents into temporary accommodation at a nearby air force base. Resident Suzanne McFadden said the storm roared through in “five minutes of utter devastation.” Police urged people to stay indoors as flash floods blocked roads and falling trees brought down power lines, blacking out about 1,300 homes. The Met service weather agency said the tornado was created by a series of intense thunderstorms that lashed the city through the day, largely dissipating by early evening, although there were fears the winds could pick up overnight. Prime Minister John Key expressed condolences to the families of the dead and praised the efforts of emergency services, who swiftly sealed off an area of about one square kilometre (0.4 square miles) that was worst affected by the tornado. -TN

Hi Tauranga, You miss out because you are on a concrete slab..:-). A friend near here also slept thru it.. she is on a slab foundation.
We were in bed, and it was long and strong.. we were just lying there talking about it when towards the end there was an increase and a big lurch and things started falling of the bookshelf.. alarm clock, a few books and ornaments.. its a tall shelf and was rocking. ( it is tied to the wall..) and that go us jumping out of bed to try and save things.. but it stopped.

Interesting that you see a building pattern. I will pay more attention. Certainly got a wakeup call....:-).

Swarm of quakes rattles New Zealand

This morning's magnitude 5.8 quake was felt widely throughout the country not only because of its size but because of the tectonic plate it happened on.

The 5.8 quake struck at 7.19am and was felt as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Southland.

It was 175 kilometres deep and centred 20km south east of Tokoroa, in the region of the Pacific Plate, one of the most active tectonic belts in the world.

It is not unusual for quakes of this magnitude and depth to occur on that plate boundary in the Tokoroa region, GeoNet duty officer, seismologist Anna Kaiser, said.

It was typical for such quakes to be felt throughout the country and particularly on the east coast, she said.

"It's typical with these types of earthquakes because it's occurring within the subducting slab. The waves travel along this material which means it can be felt at the surface or throughout quite a wide area."

A 7.3 quake which triggered a one-metre high tsunami in Japan yesterday was understood to also on the Pacific plate margin, Kaiser said.

New Zealand's 5.8 quake has been followed by at least 10 smaller tremors in the same region.

Nearly 10,000 people reported feeling the 5.8 quake on the GeoNet website.

A Greymouth resident described the quake as a "constant rolling motion", which lasted for about 10 seconds.

GNS head of volcanology Gill Jolly said there was no concern that this morning's quakes would increase the risk of an eruption at either Ruapehu or Tongariro.

A swarm of earthquakes beneath Tongariro preceded the August eruption and a series of quakes have also occurred near Ruapahu in recent months, but seem to be dying down, Jolly said.

A magnitude 5.8 quake was felt widely throughout Manawatu and much of New Zealand this morning and was followed by a swarm of smaller tremors.

The larger quake struck at 7.19am. It was 175 kilometres deep and centred 20km south east of Tokoroa.

The magnitude 5.8 quake was one of 28 quakes, ranging from magnitude 1.2 to 5.8, so far today, according to GeoNet. Most would have been unnoticed but GeoNet described some as weak and the 5.8 as moderate.

Five of those quakes have been centred near Tokoroa.

A 3.7 tremor which struck just four minutes after the 5.8 quake, was also widely felt throughout the North Island. It was centred 15km east of Tokoroa and was 198km deep.

Five more quakes have followed, another magnitude 2.6 quake was centred just north of Tokoroa and a 2.9 quake which struck at 7.31am was 15km south of Tauranga.

Smaller quakes were centred near Whanganui and Murupara.
