More than 3,500 people evacuated to emergency shelters in Fiji as the biggest cyclone in 20 years swept across the Pacific island nation today, three days after the storm killed four people and destroyed thousands of homes in nearby Samoa. Tourist resorts on many of Fiji's palm-fringed islands have been evacuated and authorities warned people to remain in shelter as Tropical Cyclone Evan battered the country, blowing over trees and destroying houses. Authorities said Cyclone Evan had generated destructive winds, torrential rains and was likely to lead to flooding due to a storm surge as it passes to the northwestern side of the main Fiji islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, with wind gusts up to 170 mph. Fiji's weather bureau said cyclone Evan was rated a category four storm, the second highest level, and was moving only at about 11 mph, meaning the destructive winds could last several hours.

Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama ordered public servants to stay at home and he put emergency services on standby. Hospitals and health centres have been closed for all but emergency patients. Power supplies have also been cut to some areas as a precaution against falling power lines, including in the main tourist town of Nadi. Airlines grounded flights to and from Fiji, stranding about 1,900 visitors in the country. "I cannot stress enough how serious this is. Every Fijian will be affected but we must take preventative steps now," Bainimarama said. Residents and businesses stocked up on food and put up shutters to protect shops and offices. Major roads have been closed and authorities are warning that bridges could be swamped by flood waters. Schools throughout the country were also being used as evacuation centres, with authorities saying more than 3,500 people had sought shelter by late on Monday. The Fiji Times reported rough seas and ferocious winds had forced a bulk carrier to run aground on a reef near the capital of Suva. Australia and New Zealand offered support to Fiji ahead of the storm and have search and rescue personnel on standby.

Seismicity has increased dramatically at Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador. Given the open-vent state of the volcano, eruption is hours to days away according to EarthquakeReport. Tungurahua volcano showed a decrease in explosive activity, seismic activity and rate of SO2 emissions since September. However, in recent months there was an increase in internal pressure manifested by a gradual inflation of its upper flanks. Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) is in full eruption today complete with locally heavy ashfall and pyroclastic flows which, combined with rainfall, generate a potential lahar hazard in drainages surrounding the volcano. The Tungurahua seismogram (station RETU) has been saturated with strong volcanic tremor since early this morning. EPN reports at least two large explosions today which generated ash clouds that rose to above 7 km height.

Cyclone Evan has hammered Fiji's second largest city, Lautoka, with destructive winds which have ripped roofs off buildings, toppled trees and sent a house flying through the air.Tourist resorts on many of Fiji's palm-fringed islands have been evacuated and authorities set up more than 60 evacuation centres ahead of the biggest cyclone in 20 years to hit the Pacific island nation.

The west of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, had "taken a beating", Fiji Times editor-in-chief Fred Wesley said.

"Lautoka city looks like a war zone - trees all over the place, roofs off buildings. It's something a lot of people there never expected. They didn't expect the cyclone to hit them to that extent," Wesley said.

"According to people on the ground ... they have never seen anything like this.

"Very, very strong winds, waves, rain, but I think what's worrying was the very, very strong winds," he said.

"For buildings to lose their roofs like that, it's a reflection of how powerful the cyclone was."

So far there had not been any reports of casualties as a result of the storm.

Evan peaked with wind speeds of 110 km/hr (nearly 70 mph), causing major damage in the Samoan capital of Apia and leaving three people dead and seven missing. Evan left about 3,000 people in shelters. Evan is expected to slowly strengthen before it affects Fiji on Sunday.

According to latest report by Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), Tropical Cyclone Evan was located approximately 495 nm northeast of Nadi, Fiji, has tracked west-southwestward at 10 knots. Animated infrared satellite imagery depicts an expanding central dense overcast feature with intense deep convection over the low-level circulation center. Animated water vapor imagery depicts good poleward outflow enhanced by strong northwesterly flow over the Fiji region. However, vertical wind shear has increased slightly to moderate levels (20 knots). Over the past twelve hours, Evan has weakened slightly and Dvorak current intensity estimates have decreased slightly to a range of 77 to 102 knots. The initial intensity is assessed at 90 knots based on an average of these Dvorak estimates.

Evan is tracking along the northern periphery of the subtropical ridge and is forecast to track west-southwestward through next 48 hours. The system is forecast to turn more southwestward as a mid-latitude shortwave
trough erodes the western periphery of the subtropical ridge. Evan is forecast to peak at 110 knots by the next 24 to 36 hours then gradually weaken due to land interaction and then undergo a more significant weakening phase due to cooler SST and strong vertical wind shear.

According to Fiji Meteorological Service, severe Tropical Cyclone Evan [960 hPa] Category (CAT) 4 centre was located near 12.6 S and 174.5 W or about 790 km east-northeast of Labasa or 980 km northeast of Suva, at 1pm DST Saturday December 15. It is now moving towards the west-southwest at 30 km/h. The cyclone is still intensifying and may attain Cat 5 status in the next 24 hours to 48 hours. Close to the centre, maximum sustained winds are estimated around 90 to 100 knots (170 to 185 km/h). Damaging gales extend to about 185 km to the south of the cyclone centre.

TC Evan should move close to or over Wallis and Futuna from tonight till tomorrow morning and keep just to the north of Fiji throughout Sunday December 16, still as a CAT 4 or possibly CAT 5. However, at this stage, it is anticipated to move over and along the Yasawa and Mamnuca groups by Tuesday. Damaging heavy waves/swells, generated by the combined effect of TC Evan and an intense area of high pressure to the far south of Fiji, are still expected. The resultant wave attack on our coastal communities, especially in Northern Lau, Taveuni, Vanua Levu and nearby smaller islands, as well as northern Viti Levu and Yasawa and Mamnuca, is expected to be severe

At this time, maximum sustained winds near the centre of the cyclone, whilst just north of Fiji, are anticipated to be around or above 170 km/hr with momentary gusts over 230 km/h. Rain will be frequent and heavy especially along and close to the track. Flooding including sea flooding of coastal areas is expected. Though the projected track of TC Evan has now shifted just to the north of Fiji, all communities in Fiji should still be prepared, heed warnings, and act responsibly, to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and/or property.

We’ve seen a couple spectacular images of explosions from Ecuador’s currently noisiest volcano, Tungurahua. This rejuvenated activity in December has promoted evacuations of people living near the volcano as both ash fall and pyroclastic flows are a very real hazard. The plume reached as high as 3 km / 16,500 feet over the weekend and seismicity remains high — all of which has the volcano on Orange Alert by the national civil defence agency of Ecuador.



Indonesia

Across the globe in Indonesia, Lokon has also been keeping active with numerous explosions, like this one from earlier today. That same brief Reuters report claims that Lokon has experienced over 800 explosions over the last 6 months, an impressive number to say the least. The plumes from the explosions are reaching 3-4 km / 11-14,000 feet. Lokon is joined by Paluweh in this week’s Global Volcanism Program Weekly Volcanic Activity Report and another 6 volcanoes are on Orange Alert status according to PVMBG.

Russia

The eruption of Tolbachik is still ongoing as this recent Terra image shows. Even with its remote location on the Kamchatka Peninsula, the eruption is drawing tourists – and I suppose it isn’t a shock considering how impressive the lava flows are (see below — be sure to check out all the images in the KVERT gallery). Some people are also trying to connect this fairly small eruption to my favorite, the Maya Apocalypse, claiming a sign of the end will be eruptions. Of course, as we all know, eruptions occur all the time, so why is this eruption in one of the most volcanically-active places on the planet a harbinger of doom? It isn’t. The latest GVP Report has the lava flows stretching 17-20 km from the vent, quite the distance for any lava flow, and the alert level remains at Orange. [link to www.wired.com]
