Volcanic action likely to mean busy summer in Tongariro National Park

The Department of Conservation says it is expecting a busy summer season in Tongariro National Park following heightened publicity after the recent volcanic activity.

DOC says summer is always a peak period for the park and the recent activity on both Mt Tongariro and Mt Ruapehu has increased the region’s profile.

DOC’s Ruapehu Area manager, Jon Maxwell, said that a wide range of hiking, mountain biking and sightseeing activities are available on both mountains and much of the popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track remains open.

He says the mountains have been attracting big crowds recently and staff are gearing up for even more visitors over the next few months.

“Tongariro National Park offers visitors the unique opportunity to tackle world class walks whilst traversing a vibrant and dynamic active volcanic landscape,” said Mr Maxwell.

Mr Maxwell advised visitors that the Te Maari section of the Alpine Crossing closest to the most recent eruption will remain closed due to on-going volcanic activity, as will the recommended no go zone around Ruapehu’s Crater Lake.

“Gas and steam are still coming from Te Maari crater and GNS scientists tell us this area is still a potential risk for increased volcanic hazard in the foreseeable future. The Ruapehu crater lake activity is still not at normal background levels and is being closely monitored by GNS science. The Department will advise when the access recommendation changes.”

The Mangatepopo road and carpark are temporarily closed to the public, to relieve congestion issues while the Te Maari section of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is closed. Visitors are encouraged to arrange their bus transport to the Alpine Crossing with bus operators from Taupo, Turangi, National Park Village, Whakapapa Village, Ohakune and SH 47 before leaving for the Crossing.

For the rest of the park it’s business as usual.

“Much of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is open, including what most consider the most scenic leg past Ngauruhoe and up to the Emerald Lakes, with its stunning volcanic landscape, and there are dozens of other tracks on both mountains to explore.”

DOC says GNS Science indicates the heightened volcanic state of Te Maari may continue for some months and the department will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Trampers Flock to Tongario after Eruption

Tourism operators in the Tongariro National Park are attributing a jump in visitor numbers to the recent volcanic activity.

Just over a week after the latest eruption, the Tongariro northern circuit track and part of the Tongariro alpine crossing have reopened today.

Tourism operators have reported a huge spike in business since the earlier eruption in August and say the volcanic activity has been great promotion for the tracks.

Mount Tongariro's eruption on November 21 saw flights cancelled, a Civil Defence alert issued, a three-kilometre exclusion zone set up around the mountain and Department of Conservation tracks closed within a three-kilometre radius of the crater.

The mountain is currently on a Volcanic Alert Level of one, which indicates signs of volcano unrest, and GeoNet indicates Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu continue to be closely monitored for renewed activity.

The section of the crossing from Oturere Junction to Ketetahi Road remains closed at this stage and a protective restriction remains in place around the highest risk area within 1km of the Upper Te Maari Crater.

All other facilities, activities and alternative walking tracks are fully operational within the 80,000ha Tongariro National Park.

Weird eerie green light emanating from where volcano is. This webcam is usually just pitch black at night anyone have an idea what this is? Click on the pic to increase size.

December 20, 2012 – GUATEMALA CITY – Pacaya Volcano, located 47 kilometers south of the capital, has had increased activity in recent days with ash and gas being released into the air, said the Institute of Volcanology (Insivumeh). On Wednesday, the institute issued a preventive alert and recommended the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conrad) to keep monitoring the 2,500-meter-tall volcano, located between the departments of Guatemala City and Escuintla. “The activity yesterday [Tuesday] was a manifestation of reactivation, so people should be aware of developments in coming days,” Insivumeh experts said. Conrad also released a statement on its website that recommends people “to keep informed and be aware of official information provided by authorities.” The last eruption of Pacaya occurred in May 2010 when a powerful explosion sent ashes to three departments, including the capital, and forced the closing of La Aurora International Airport for five days. The country’s Geophysical Institute says incandescent rock shot from the crater of the 16,479-foot (5,023-meter) high mountain fell about half a mile (a kilometer) down its flanks. Explosions early Wednesday rattled windows 9 miles (14 kilometers) away, while rain-borne ash has been falling to the southwest of the crater. Regional emergency director Lourdes Mayorga says that about 100 families are staying in shelters away from the danger zone, though they return during the day to work their fields. Unstable sea slab near Barrier Reef could cause monster tsunami in north Queensland

December 21, 2012 – AUSTRALIA – An enormous slab of sea floor is in the early stages of collapse off north Queensland, and could generate a tsunami when it finally breaks off, researchers warn. The one cubic kilometer slab – dubbed the Noggin Block – is the remains of an ancient underwater landslide, and sits perched on the edge of the continental shelf. Researchers discovered it while mapping the sea floor around the Great Barrier Reef. James Cook University marine biologist Robin Beaman says the slab will eventually break away from the Great Barrier Reef and when that happens it could generate a huge tsunami. “It’s actually up on the top of the continental slope in about 350 meters of water,” Dr. Beaman told ABC radio. “It’s a pretty big chunk of sea floor (and) is in the very slow, early stages of starting to break away from the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. If it were to break away catastrophically, that is break away really quickly … it would actually cause a tsunami. “That tsunami would travel across the Great Barrier Reef, it’s about 70 kilometers offshore, and it would impact the local area, the North Queensland area. It’s estimated it would take about an hour for any tsunami to hit coastal areas such as Mourilyan Harbour and Clump Point, south of Cairns. But Dr. Beaman says it’s still very stable, and something like a very large earthquake near the site would be needed to trigger a catastrophic collapse any time soon. “That is very unlikely. But we should be aware that these things exist. We don’t really know when such a block might collapse. All I can say is sometime it eventually will.” –News

Cyclone Evan has hammered Fiji's second largest city, Lautoka, with destructive winds which have ripped roofs off buildings, toppled trees and sent a house flying through the air.Tourist resorts on many of Fiji's palm-fringed islands have been evacuated and authorities set up more than 60 evacuation centres ahead of the biggest cyclone in 20 years to hit the Pacific island nation.

The west of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, had "taken a beating", Fiji Times editor-in-chief Fred Wesley said.

"Lautoka city looks like a war zone - trees all over the place, roofs off buildings. It's something a lot of people there never expected. They didn't expect the cyclone to hit them to that extent," Wesley said.

"According to people on the ground ... they have never seen anything like this.

"Very, very strong winds, waves, rain, but I think what's worrying was the very, very strong winds," he said.

"For buildings to lose their roofs like that, it's a reflection of how powerful the cyclone was."

So far there had not been any reports of casualties as a result of the storm.

December 22, 2012 – VANUATU – A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Saturday, December 22, the US Geological Survey said. But no immediate tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck at a depth of more than 200 kilometers at around 9:30am (2230 GMT Friday) some 130 kilometers north of Santo, USGS said. “It’s quite deep … so there’s no tsunami,” said David Jepsen, a seismologist with Geoscience Australia which measured the quake at 6.6 magnitude. I think it’s well away from (the capital) Port Vila… but it’s closer to some of the islands further to the northwest, but they would have had some moderate shaking really,” he told AFP. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive tsunami was not generated, based on the earthquake and historical tsunami data. Vanuatu lies on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a zone of frequent seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates. It has been rocked by several large quakes in recent years, averaging about three magnitude 7.0 or above incidents every year without any major damage. – Rappler
