New submarine volcanic eruption off Turkey’s coast suspected

January 4, 2013 – TURKEY – A new submarine volcanic eruption might have recently started off Turkey’s west coast in the Marmaris Sea between the mainland and the Greek Island of Simi near Rhodes. Scientists from Istanbul’s Technical University announced that they have found evidence of 2 active vents at about 200 m water depth along a north-south trending fissure of 2.5-3 km length. According to local newspapers, a rise in sea temperature was detected which suggests that lava might be erupting from the vents. According to Prof. Ahmet Ercan, it might take 1-3, or 20 years for the volcano to surface if at all. The area is located at the eastern end of the volcanically active Hellenic Arc and volcanic activity here would not be a huge surprise, in fact. Possibly preceding the eruption, as magma was rising through the crust, the area was affected by a series of seismic swarms during the past months. Pronounced climate extremes continue across hemispheres: Tasmania has hottest day on record

January 5, 2013 – AUSTRALIA - Australia’s southern island of Tasmania has experienced its hottest day since records began, with the capital Hobart sweltering at 41.8 Celsius (107.2 Fahrenheit) on Friday. The Bureau of Meteorology said the temperature in Tasmania, where records have been kept since the early 1880s, beat the previous high of 40.8 Celsius set in January 1976. “There are only three or four (days) on record over 40 degrees so it’s quite rare,” said Melbourne-based Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Murray Keable. Southern Australia has been experiencing a heat-wave that has seen bushfires destroy several buildings in Tasmania, and the temperature rise to 45 Celsius in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Further inland Wudinna, on the Eyre Peninsula, hit 48.2 Celsius and a string of other South Australian towns topped 47 Celsius. In Australia’s biggest city Sydney, thousands headed to beaches to escape the heat but the temperature was much milder, hitting a maximum of just 29 Celsius in the city centre. –Space Daily

Up in flames: In Tasmania, east of Hobart, fires destroyed as many as 65 buildings at Dunalley and 15 at Boomer Bay. There were also unconfirmed reports that one life had been lost. Fires burned out of control in Victoria and South Australia where temperatures were well above 40C and strong southwesterly winds worsened conditions. Tasmanian fire authorities were making comparisons to the conditions that led to the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria that left 173 people dead, state fire chief Mike Brown declaring “we reached catastrophic fire danger ratings at times this afternoon.” Deputy Police ommissioner Scott Tilyard said a team of experts had been sent to Forcett, near Dunalley, last night to verify a report that a person had died. “We’ve got people flying into the area at the moment to do an assessment of the Dunalley township in particular,” Mr Tilyard said. “That particular township … has been the hardest hit this afternoon by the fire that started at orcett“We have a report of about 50 people on the waterfront at Boomer Bay who are quite safe – there’s a fair bit of smoke in the area so there’s obviously concerns in relation to potential smoke inhalation, and we’ve got plans in place to, if necessary, evacuate those people by boat.” The buildings destroyed in Dunalley, by a blaze started in nearby Forcett, include a primary school, petrol station and the RSL. Resident Peter Crocker told the ABC: “To my knowledge, I know of at least two houses between myself and Dunalley that have been lost and I know of a couple of houses at Copping that have been destroyed by fire. “We’re going to try and go back into the area and see what’s there and see if we can salvage anything out of it or put any fires out, if the house is not already gone.” Tasmanian fire authorities upgraded a warning for another fire near Bicheno on the island’s east coast where campers were being evacuated and residents encouraged to act on their bushfire plans or leave. Fires are also burning on the mid-north coast of NSW near Forster and in western parts of Queensland. Inland Australia can expect temperatures above 40C for the next week, a prolonged heat-wave that will leave southern Australia on high bushfire alert. Meteorologists are describing the blast of hot air as unusual, given the size of the area it is affecting. Birdsville, in Queensland’s far west, had a high of 47.3C while Hobart reached a record 41.8C – one degree hotter than the record set in 1976. But it was South Australia that bore the brunt, with the wheat-town of Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula recording a high of 48.2C and 20 people admitted to hospital with heat-related illness. Earth in crisis: Is the planet on the verge of a ‘meltdown’?

January 5, 2013 - PLANET – Conditions on the planet continue to deteriorate, particularly in respect to more pronounced climate extremes seen across hemispheres, and the number of volcanoes that are now continuously erupting. The planet is undergoing dynamic change, whereby we’re seeing early evidence that the physical dynamics of the planet is moving towards a spectrum of greater instability. This is happening, as the planet’s magnetic field continues to abate in strength. This is suggestive that we’ve passed the rubicon in this internal process of a geological shift that has been brought on by an anomalistic fluctuation of thermal gradient in the planet’s outer core. Consequently, change is now uniform, and these Earthchanges can now generate events which will affect the entire planet. We had a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in Falcon, Venezuela on January 4, 2013 and that earthquake was immediately followed by a 4.3 earthquake in the Ceram Sea and a 4.9 in Halmahera, Indonesia. Both points on the globe are on exact opposite ends of the planet. We call it an antipodal tangent. On January 5, we had a 5.1 magnitude earthquake on the Mid-Indian Ridge and that was followed approximately 4.5 hours later by an earthquake near the antipodal point of the Cascadian fault with a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in southeastern Alaska. What this means is the entire planet is now starting to resonate from this heightened state of seismicity. The Bible prophesized in Isaiah 24:20 there would come a time, in the very near future, where the Earth would be reeling to and fro or back and forth like a drunkard. This is a state of resonate seismicity resulting from the impact of very large cluster earthquakes or what we refer to in geology as an earthquake storm.

Breaking bad: In April of 2012, a leading earthquake scientist warned in the Croatian Times that the planet could be cracking up after a series of massive quakes in just 48 hours. Expert Gheorghe Marmureanu – from Romania’s National Institute of Earth Physics – says 39 quakes hit the globe within two days in April. The series started with two massive quakes in Indonesia measuring 8.6 and 8.2 on the Richter scale, rapidly followed by three more only slightly smaller in Mexico within hours. “There is no doubt that something is seriously wrong. There have been too many strong earthquakes,” said Marmureanu. He added: “The quakes are a surprise that cannot be easily explained by current scientific knowledge. With the Indonesian quake for example, statistically, there should be one big earthquake in this part of Asia every 500 years. However, since 2004, there were already three quakes with a magnitude of over 8, which is not normal.” In September of 2012, scientists said the Indo-Australian plate near Indonesia was in the early stages of breaking in pieces. 1

Moral degeneracy: And it’s not just a physical crisis the planet is suffering from. Civilization, as a whole, appears to be on the verge of unraveling. We saw the increase in violence, rise in ethnic strife, and moral degeneracy that plagued Rome before the empire began to unravel. A near endless bloody civil war continues in Syria that has claimed nearly 60,000 human lives. Economic hardships, high unemployment, austerity measures, and crushing debt loads plague many countries, including the world’s three largest economies: the U.S., China, and Japan. Mass shooting incidents appear to be on the rise in the U.S. Violence has become pandemic in many regions of the world from China to Brazil, even as gun sales continue to set records in the U.S. Just this week, a sergeant in Saudi Arabia’s Air Force was jailed in Las Vegas on charges that he pulled a boy into a hotel room and sexually assaulted him the morning of Sin City’s big New Year’s Eve fireworks extravaganza. Mazen Alotaibi, 23, faces charges including kidnapping, sexual assault with a minor and felony.2 Gang rapes and violence against women occur frequency across India, Afghanistan, and many regions of Africa, where women have very little or almost no rights in male-dominated societies. Some of the cases coming out of India speak of unmitigated horrors. The suffering of a university student and her male friend who were brutally attacked aboard a bus in India’s capital did not end after the woman was gang-raped and both were savagely beaten for 2 1/2 hours on December 16, 2012 in New Delhi. Dumped naked on a roadside, the pair encountered shocking apathy as passersby offered only cursory looks and police debated jurisdiction for 30 minutes before taking them to a hospital, where the man received no treatment as he sat without clothes on the floor for hours, the friend recounted in a television interview. If you think that was an isolated incident, consider the fact that 25 cases of assualt were reported across India during the week of the New Delhi incident.3

Scientists seek foolproof way to predict earthquakes using magnetic waves

January 6, 2013 – CALIFORNIA – Twenty-three hundred years ago, hordes of mice, snakes, and insects fled the Greek city of Helike on the Gulf of Corinth (map). “After these creatures departed, an earthquake occurred in the night,” wrote the ancient Roman writer Claudius Aelianus. “The city subsided; an immense wave flooded and Helike disappeared.” Since then, generations of scientists and folklorists have used a dizzying array of methods to attempt to predict earthquakes. Animal behavior, changes in the weather and seismograms have all fallen short. One theory is that when an earthquake looms, the rock “goes through a strange change,” producing intense electrical currents, says Tom Bleier, a satellite engineer with QuakeFinder, a project funded by his parent company, Stellar Solutions, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. “These currents are huge,” Bleier said at the AGU meeting. “They’re on the order of 100,000 amperes for a magnitude 6 earthquake and a million amperes for a magnitude 7. It’s almost like lightning, underground.” To measure those currents, Bleier’s team has spent millions of dollars putting out magnetometers along fault lines in California, Peru, Taiwan, and Greece. The instruments are sensitive enough to detect magnetic pulses from electrical discharges up to 10 miles (16 kilometers) away. “In a typical day along the San Andreas fault (in California), you might see ten pulses per day,” he told National Geographic News. “The fault is always moving, grinding, snapping, and crackling.” Before a large earthquake, that background level of static-electricity discharges should rise sharply, Bleier said. And that is indeed what he claims he’s seen prior to the half dozen magnitude 5 and 6 earthquakes whose precursors he’s been able to monitor. “It goes up to maybe 150 or 200 pulses a day,” he said. The number of pulses, he added, seems to surge about two weeks before the earthquake then drop back to background level until shortly before the fault slips. “That’s the pattern we’re looking for,” he said. –NG

GNS Science Volcanologists today lowered the Volcanic Alert Level for White Island to level 1 and the Aviation Colour Code to Yellow. This reflects the end of the current period of eruption which involved the growth of a small lava dome in the crater.

The lava dome that was first observed in late November by tour operators has been monitored over the last 6 weeks. The most recent visit was on 1st January 2013 and this showed that the dome had not grown since previous visits on the 10th and 20th December 2012. As such we consider that the current episode of eruption to have ceased.

Lava dome temperatures measured on the 1st January were at around 200-240°C and the nearby hot lake was 70-80°C. These temperatures are similar to those made previously. GNS Science Volcanologist Nico Fournier said that “the dome looked exactly the same as it did on our previous visits. Good viewing conditions allowed us to get some remote temperature measurements using an infrared thermometer. The hot lake was really fizzing, lots of gas coming through it”

Results of airborne gas measurements from 20th December showed that White Island is emitting volcanic gases at the rate of approximately 400T/d SO2, 1300T/d CO2 and 10T/d H2S.

Seismicity continues to show elevated levels of tremor.

Observers of the GeoNet webcams may notice a slight glow in the night time images which is related to the relatively hot dome and gases.

Even though the current episode of eruptive activity is over White Island still remains in a heightened state of unrest and future eruptions are still possible with little or no warning.

GNS Science continues to closely monitor White Island through the GeoNet project.

Background
The Volcanic Alert Level ranges from 0 to 5 and defines the current status at a volcano. Level 1 indicates departure from typical surface background activity.

Aviation Colour Codes are based on four colours and are intended for quick reference only in the international civil aviation community. A reduction to Code Yellow from Orange indicates volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.

Volcanoes can erupt in many different ways. They can erupt explosively like Tongariro in 2012 when rocks and ash were hurled into the sky. They can erupt effusively with lava flows like Ngauruhoe in 1954 or in Hawaii. A lava dome is a type of effusive eruption.

The GeoNet project is funded by EQC and provides monitoring for all of New Zealand’s volcanoes.

January 7, 2013 – ITALY - According to a recent report by INGV Naples, the ground deformation of the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) near Naples has increased considerably lately. During the last 12 months, the ground in some places near the town of Pozzuoli was uplifted by about 8 cm. The largest uplift, recorded by GPS devices, occurred during the months of July-August 2012 and since December. The trend appears to be continuing at the moment. Such (sometimes dramatic, totaling up to several meters in a few years) ground uplift and subsidence have been known in the Phlegraean Fields since antiquity and are not a new phenomenon. They can usually be explained by normal pressure, temperature and density variations of the giant hydrothermal system of the Campi Flegrei caldera and may not necessarily indicate an imminent eruption. However, in addition to the detected ground deformation, scientists also measured increased numbers of micro earthquakes, a rise in temperature and in particular, an increase in the proportion of the gases of magmatic origin at fumaroles in the Solfatara crater. As the hydrothermal system is closely connected with the underlying complex magma chamber of the Phlegrean Fields, new magma movements could in fact be the culprit for the observed changes. Whether these, and if so when, will lead to a new volcanic eruption is currently uncertain. A much larger increase of such observed changes should probably be expected if in fact should new volcanic activity was to announce itself. The last volcanic eruption occurred after a rest period of about 3000 years in the year 1538 AD and built a new cinder cone, the Monte Nuovo (“New Mountain”) near Pozzuoli. Strong ground uplift, earthquakes and changes in springs and fumaroles preceded the eruption according to historical sources. Even though it was – geologically speaking – a rather small eruption, the effects of a similar event today would be devastating for the very densely populated area. It should be hoped that the residents and all involved are spared such a scenario, at least for the near future. –Volcano Discovery

January 7, 2013 – VENEZUELA – The as-yet-unexplained disappearance last Friday of the plane carrying six passengers and crew, including Italian fashion mogul Vittorio Missoni, has prompted some to blame the “Los Roques curse.” The label has been attached to a series of mysterious plane crashes and “vanishings” over the past decade or so between the Caribbean archipelago of Los Roques and the Venezuelan capital Caracas, 140km to the south. Inevitably, comparisons have been made with the infamous Bermuda Triangle, the area between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico that has long had a reputation for unexplained disappearances of ships and planes. To date, no wreckage of Missoni’s plane has been located since it took off from Los Roques for Caracas. A hotel owner on the islands said he last saw the plane – a twin-engine BN-2 Islander built in 1968 – entering a bank of clouds. Meanwhile, the Missoni family said it was not ruling out the possibility that the plane had been hijacked by local drug smugglers. Venezuela’s civil aviation authority said the aircraft’s last recorded position was 18km south of the Los Roques. Since the mid-90s, there have been at least 15 reported incidents in which small aircraft have crashed, disappeared or declared emergencies while travelling through the area. In 2008, 14 people were killed when a plane making the same journey as Missoni’s crashed into the sea. No wreckage was ever found and only one body was recovered. Speculation about possible explanations for the “curse” has ranged from basic pilot error through to the release of methane hydrates from the sea floor. The lack of evidence only fuels speculation. Such mysteries are, of course, fodder to those with a conspiratorial mind. Other areas that have become renowned for unexplained disappearances include the Formosa Triangle, the Michigan Triangle, the Sargasso Sea, and the Devil’s Sea off Japan. But Nick Wall, editor of Pilot, says pilots are a pragmatic, rational lot who don’t get distracted by talk of triangles and curses: “There’s always some explanation for these things – even if it takes many years to uncover the answer. Pilots prefer to concentrate on the things that genuinely will help them live longer such as fuel gauges, weather reports and engine inspections. They are increasingly aware of previously unknown meteorological phenomena such as coastal wind shearing and mountain waves, which can cause sudden turbulence. But it is too early to know for sure what caused this latest incident.” –Guardian
