Untill your robot is smart enough to be directed by TV propaganda - they can´t be trusted.
And when they are smart enough to not follow said directions - they will be illegal.
Get it? Nobody is going to let YOU have one anyway.
Its already started, whitness the ´lead story´ here, which say between the lines;
1 Robots bad.
2 People stupid.
3 So if you have one >YOU ARE DANGEROUS<.
4 Only the Government can be trusted with robots.
5 We (and our bots) will protect you.
