Imagine if you had told him this 50 years ago; you would have 50 year old unused stock items which had spoiled.

The above is not correct. Canned goods would still be ok to eat , not spoiled. Might taste like hell.

Same as self canned goods. They tested some canned food over 100 years old from an old ship once and it was edible still.

Sex has absolutely NOTHING to do with why he doesn't want to prepare for a catastrophe. Our sex life is fine and good. Let's just take that bit off the table because it isn't relevant in this circumstance. It may be in some, but not here. It's his refusal to deal with current events that may have a bearing on our future. He lives for the day - can't blame him for that and I wish I could do the same, really.

It sounds like you're saying if I give the man a blow job he will give me whatever I want. If that worked, I'd have a new wardrobe and drive a Jaguar.

say what you wish, but any man unconcerned about his mates or his families worries or securities, has spent his worry currency somewhere else.
Youre somehow unable to state your case with conviction, or he doesnt care if he, or you, survives, for some reason you are yet unaware of.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11132818

Now that makes sense. And, it's cause for pause and thought. I may not be stating my case with conviction because I don't want to seem like I'm on the crazy train - but still...why wouldn't he care about survival? That is the question here. Why does he not want to know or do anything to protect himself or "us"?

Seems this is a case for a professional, really. Something has to be running pretty deep there. It makes no sense to me otherwise.

Thanks.
 Quoting: Serendipitous

being that i am a professional in this, i'm doing my best to get you on track. YOU must first deal with the anchor line you find yourself tangled up in before you can save others. Your frustration is understandable, but there is another reason you are so frustrated with your partners refusal. You seem to need his approval for something that you should be able to do for yourself, by yourself, something that any being should do automatically, which is to work towards your best interests now, and in the future.
What is it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11132818

I get that, but we are married so I can't just save myself. I'm trying to save both of us (when and IF). I could just keep stocking up a little here and there, but shouldn't he be involved in our mutual well-being? There may be no need, but if the possibility is there shouldn't he take measure to keep us safe? I could just leave and take care of myself but that doesn't abide by the "better or worse" vow.

Everything else in our relationship is fine, no arguments ever - discuss everything...but this. And this seems pretty darned important to me. If it's important to me, shouldn't that be enough? Again - not asking for anything major, just some awareness would be a good start.

I am so tired of trying to convince my husband that we should at least stock up on some extra water & canned goods - let alone listen to anything I'm trying to tell him about what's going on. He just does not want to know. So, I just told him this, "Ok, so if something happens I don't want to hear how hungry or thirsty you are. If you are prepared to die, fine."

What the hell is wrong with people? Why not stock up just in case something does happen? Should I have to stay here and die with him???

If I were to tell people that a big solar flare is going to come, it's a matter of time...they'd think I was a nutcase. I can't even talk to my husband about it. Where do you go from here - just die with them? (no kids btw)

Maybe you should make a separate food storage list for your husband... Get him the most bland tasting, unappetizing stuff.... Get yourself the best stuff you can think of.... Then, when the SHTF, you can still have peace of mind in knowing that you had the forethought to prepare for both of you, but then you can also rub it in his face when he's eating his saltines and you're enjoying your soups & pastas. : )

My biggest issue on stocking up - how to deal with loved ones who won't listen, but will, no doubt, come knocking on my door when the time has come.

Just their luck, and I'm hinting to it right now: I don't have the money or other means to stock up for them as well, so tough luck. It will be just me and my pets, I have barely enough for us. But maybe they can come work on my farm and earn their part.

Since you're married, it's all the more difficult. Stock up anyway. I don't know if you should keep trying to wake him up, it might have an adverse effect, but know that he'll be grateful and humble when TSHTF and he may never, ever doubt anything you say, ever again! rofl

in truth, her hubby is no conservative. A bollocks conservative calls himself a conservative, and preserves himself, making him a liberal in fact.
A functional conservative conserves the basic family unit, and makes sacrifices to their survival.

One has to choose, whether to live in the land of lies or be judged by his actions.
In any event, the op is more likely to want to win at something, and who better than some internet stranger.
I assumed I would get a response to the contrary as a face saving gambit, so, that's where I'll leave it.

Re: Why do people like their heads in the sand?? Husband won't listen.

I don't know if you should keep trying to wake him up, it might have an adverse effect, but know that he'll be grateful and humble when TSHTF and he may never, ever doubt anything you say, ever again! rofl

Just remember that preparation goes far beyond physical supplies. It also involves ethical, emotional, and spiritual preparation. These are probably much tougher than the physical.

I'm working on those as well, I guess... I kind of feel I'm more ready to face that music than I am facing the world of today, where everybody is still desperately denying anything is wrong. What does the ethical/emotional/spiritual preparation mean to you?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1989632

The whole story is probably too complex for GLP. But what brought the issue to mind was the part I bolded in your original post. Who will we turn away, and who will we not turn away.

In a way, we already face that issue in today's society. There are those who have more than enough, and there are those who have less than enough. Who will those with more than enough turn away because of selfishness or fear?

he's a liberal. Nothing you can do. they are incapable of learning, or assimilating contrary evidence, so all evidence to the contrary must be ignored or mocked, depending whether a bit of the old inout is the possible outcome or not.
But he probably claims that poor old dear leader isnt getting a break from the republican press, either
I'm right again, arent I?

Wish I could say you were, but he's a staunch conservative. Hated Obama from the get-go. However, with the inability to learn amidst contrary evidence? Bingo.

OP - this self-professed "professional" doesn't sound professional to me.

in truth, her hubby is no conservative.

Aside from your first response (which was less than helpful to say the least and I will forget I read), you did make some good points. And maybe his is not as conservative as he lets on given his actions in this circumstance. I'm not trying to win at anything, just seeking useful advice from an audience that most likely can relate to the situation. The only thing I've disagreed with wholeheartedly is your first assumption regarding our physical relationship. Beyond that, you were helpful. And I thank you.

I thank everyone who replied with insight and intellect. I have gotten a much better perspective on the situation and I can say I will deal with it far differently now. I will take care of both of us as best I can. I'm sure if he knew the gravity of the situation he'd do the same for me.

if he can't even talk about stocking up on supplies, which should be a basic thing that everyone does, he is ruled by fear and will turn into the biggest pussy you've ever seen when tshtf.

a generation ago EVERYONE kept a supply of food, water, and other daily goods.

to the moran who said if you did this 50 years ago, that you'd have 50 year old crap that was never used - you do realize food and water can be consumed? that you can stock up, use what you have before it's expired, and you don't run the risk of running out of anything?

i swear it seems people are so dumb they won't even NOTICE when it really gets crazy.

Re: Why do people like their heads in the sand?? Husband won't listen.
Op,

Perhaps your husband can understand being practical in an uncertain world and one thinks better in stressful times with food in their belly and clean warm clothes on their body.

My husband has a greater understanding of economics than I do however, three years go he thought I was irrational purchasing items such as a Berkey water filtration system, propane heaters, Volcano II collapsible stove with a propane attachment and freeze dried foods.

I ignored him then one day about almost two years ago, he came into my computer room and looked and what I had acquired bit by bit and asked how long would what we have hold us. He became an outright enthusiast when we lost power for over a week and the generator for power the heaters for warmth the easy to prepare food and not to forget stored water for drinking and washing and the runoff from the roof for the toilets we were comfortable.

Apparently, he took a long hard look at our society and where it was headed, along with naturally occurring problems and decided that it was a good idea to be prepared for what might happen economically.

I work slowly speak my mind but had to wait until he realized that being prepared is better than the alternative and if jobs are lost we have extra everything including clothing, shoes and it is that much less we have to worry about and nothing goes to waste.

Why don't you just leave him... It's clear you don't love him.

If I didn't love him I wouldn't care and would have been gone long ago. Thanks for such a thoughtful, caring reply.

Because they're afraid to. Though... could be a thought process like " omg it's happening there, it'll never happen here... EVER!"

Rewatched The Day After Tomorrow and noticed that this was put into alot of scenes in that movie ( like the tornadoes in L.A. quote " This is L.A. What weather?! " )... Which is true for alot of people in the world.

The funny thing is, though that despite of all of the sophisicated technology that we have... in the end anything can happen.
I dug up some info on Earthquake history and faultlines in my state awhile back and was amazed that we have had a history of earthquakes in the past, while now the faultlines here seems sort've dormant.
But that doesn't mean that they'll remain so, they still do earthquake emergency drills here in schools... atleast did when I went to school.

With the freaky weather and large earthquakes that we've been having around the world, I wouldn't be surprised if TSHTF sooner.

It's better to be prepared than be sorry if such a scenario happens. Or hope that you'll die a quick pain-less death...

Serendipitous,

My husband doesn't believe either, spiritually, he laughs
when I say we are in the end of times, a few moments away
from the Great Tribulation.
