The Brisbane District Court was told Liberian national Tamba Sahr, 17, was with a group of "young African'' men when he taunted, robbed or assaulted a series of commuters at the Fairfield Railway Station, on Brisbane's southside, on October 28 last year.

Prosecutors had demanded Sahr, who fled to Australia as a refugee five years ago, be jailed for up to three years.

But, Sahr was handed two years' probation and 80-hours' community service when his lawyers convinced the court the teenager and his family had been the victims of war atrocities while living in their war-torn homeland.

Sahr, a full-time student, today pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one each of robbery with violence in company with others and attempted armed robbery with actual violence.
