I have a mole coming out of its hole regularly when we are there 3 feet away, eyes open looking at me showing no fear. I don't know how common is this, I was just about to make a thread about it.

He (?) seems to be kinda playful, keep going back and forth, sometimes even comes all the way out, tears some weed and taking it down to his nest.
It is really funny to watch:-))

I wonder if this is normal?

moles around my house don't last long
enough for me to find out if they are
friendly or not.

my dogs see to that ;)

they dig them out of the ground
and have a nice lunch.

You don't mean it harm, it doesn't mean you harm. Besides, moles are pretty much blind. I think you're being still, or peaceful enough that it's okay with you.

If you don't mind it being there it'll more than likely give you some fun wildlife to watch.

PS the pic is cool though OP

Thank you guys...glp is great for education, too, not just for news and entertainment. Now, the question is if the groundhogs are this friendly normally, or something is off?

Moles aren't blind, either. They just have really bad eyesight and no optometrists...

No. Wild animals losing fear of humans when they have not been tamed is a sign of severe sickness.

It is happening with wild birds in Japan and the sick seals in Alaska. Both of those have been in the news.

I wonder what moles eat?

I don't know about moles, but I've got a mama squirrel that will come down out of the tree and just about jump in my lap for a pecan when I'm outside sitting in my lawn chair.

She shows almost no fear of me and is almost bold. When I have no nuts, she just walks around under my chair and looks up at me as if to say "got anything to eat?" She even sniffs my shoe.

I've never seen a squirrel act this way.
