It's called accountability. What are you doing with the resources God has entrusted you? The answer is no.
 Quoting: SevenThunders

I don't have a bible verse to shoot at you, but don't you think you should give when asked, regardless of the cause?
 Quoting: Borian

Yeah right, support all the druggies and alcoholics and bums who have ZERO pride and will ask or beg for a buck . . . forget the good people down on their luck who are too proud to beg.

I think one should not assume or pass judgement, if they are asking and you have it to give... then give. You never know, that day they may really need a bite to eat or a bottle of water. :)

Re: Would you give a meth addict a buck if he asked?
First if someone asked me for a $1 how would I know what they were going to do with it?

I don't run with meth addicts so my friends who might ask for a $1 wouldn't be druggies.

Second it's not my place to judge.

I give to guys waiting on exit ramps. But it's usually food.
I will give $ if the sign says homeless vet. Sure they could be lying but that's on them.

No, you can usually tell the tweekers from the rest of the bums.

On a side note, I laughed out loud at a sign a young hitchhiker whipped out in front of the liquor store on my drive home yesterday.

It read:

"I won't lie, I need money for beer."
Because he made me lol, I gave him a dollar.

Not just 'NO' but "HELL NO!"

Why, oh why, would a person let a meth head get physically close enough to him to hand him anything???

Maybe most folks here have never dealt with The Walking Dead -- because that is what meth heads are.

I have. As a social worker. Many of them.

They are nothing but predators. All concience, all humanity is dead as a doornail.

Would you hand a piece of fried chicken to a shark, or to a bear?

No. You would know that you would suffer injury as a result. Because the shark or bear is simply a predator that cannot distinguish a human from a piece of meat, and take your arm off.

Meth heads are no longer human in any sense of the word.

We are nothing but a way to get another fix to them.

My dad is the same way. He was a smoker for about 50 years and just decided one day he was going to quit
. Never smoked again. I have a friend who has been trying to quit for years now, she will quit for a few months but then go back to it. I really do believe it is all in the mind. Having self respect and knowing what you want goes a long way in changing. :)

Oh, how great that your father quite smoking AFTER you were grown - but he subjected you to it while you were growing up?

Yeah, real self-respect.

Many "parents" did that and didn't give a damn about the environment that their own children were exposed to.

It is called child abuse.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15767042

hahahahahahahah I never knew my father until I was about to graduate from high school. I didn't even know where he lived. I grew up with my grandparents after both my parents up and left me at the hospital after I was born. I had to write to his mother to get a letter to him saying I wanted to meet him. So no, I was never inconvenienced or harmed in any way by his smoking. :)

Re: Would you give a meth addict a buck if he asked?
Giving to an addict - of any kind - is tantamount to being party to a slow murder of another. In handing over money you've entered into that agreement. We're as responsible and accountable to our selves/god as much as we are to others. So if I wouldn't give money to a friend or family member who's an addict due to 'tough love', why would I think any less of an identified street addict? Life's tough enough for those who've made the addict choice, without me adding to their woes.
Now giving of food is a different matter...although in my part of the world it needs to be opened first or the person begging will often try to return it to the store for cash (esp if they're an addict)or sell to other homeless/addicts.

I do not believe God would want us to condone or help in the destruction of another person's health. We have been commanded to love and to help the poor. Helping the poor is not giving drugs to those who cannot afford them. We are to feed the poor.

But you'd be helping the old lady he would mug, if you didn't give him a buck ;)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15710854

lol Believe it or not, I have considered this very issue. And again, I will say, I have never felt led to give money. I have never, to my knowledge, come across a drug addicted homeless person. If I had, I did not know. If I had, I would have prayed for guidance as to how I should help. If I were led to give money, then of course, that is what I would do. It is sad many people will be harmed due to drug use. It is a fact of life that I believe we can change. We can change it only if there are more people who cared for others and truly loved others as themselves or as their family. There is a saying, it takes a village to raise a child. The same holds true to crime and drug addiction. It takes a community to help those in need of help.
 Quoting: CarrieRosie

I usually don't take this route, but "Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." KJV 5:42.

I usually look at the begger and hopefully tell the honest ones from the bad one. I usually do get a feeling from them.

Re: Would you give a meth addict a buck if he asked?
I have had this same reasoning with a friend of mine who has issues with my giving a dollar to those who ask for money.

It seems to me many people have some serious control issues even when it is only a dollar...

My friend will say "how do your know how they will spend it? If they get alcohol or drugs?"

First off it is only a dollar.

Secondly, I will often see someone asking for money before they see me and I ask for guidance, and often I am guided (by the Holy Spirit) to bless the individual. I make eye contact, and often say "blessings". And more often than not am blessed by those whom I have given to.

It's only a dollar, but to someone who is poor - it is often in the receiving, much more than that dollar.

OneLOVE

(don't forget the LOVE)

This I can agree with. I'll never miss the dollar.
