Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9867771 Its Indonesia and corrupt as F, for sure with the vast amounts of cash involved in potential sales they'll want to keep it quiet right up until they can't any more. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 15430038 United Kingdom 05/09/2012 01:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sketchy details but I just heard from an unofficial source they found the wreck at 3,000ft near a waterfall on Gunung Salak , we will probably get official details in the morning. Quoting: northerntomcat I have some other details but I will wait now for the official version but it doesn't sound good. From the PPRN [link to www.pprune.org] Unless a issue with the altimeter, this shows fuel exhaustion or a complete failure of the aircraft. Given it was cleared down to 6000ft, there's only one way it got to 3000ft and that was it's descent kept on going. Had it been flying at the intended height the crash site would be nearer 5000-6000ft if not slightly higher. |

There's no reason for the requested descent other than a photo op of the mountain they probably hit, strange as aircraft consume more fuel at lower altitudes. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11213272 United States 05/09/2012 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If it crashed it could be seen for miles. Fire causes smoke and I"m sure that the airliner would send up a pretty good sized smoke plum that would be highly visible. Quoting: Gabriel's Sword That would depend on how much fuel was on board. Perhaps the pilot knew ahead of time he wasn't going to make it and dumped all the fuel. Seems the only hope right now that maybe there might be survivors. |

northerntomcat User ID: 13843244 Canada 05/09/2012 01:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Indonesian air transport officials stated that the aircraft was flying at about 10,000 feet near Mount Salak at 3:30pm local time when the crew requested a descent to 6000 feet. The request was granted by local air traffic control; this was the last contact that they had with the aircraft. Radar contact was lost as the aircraft descended in a right hand turn at the previously requested height between Mount Salak and Mount Gede. Mount Salak is 2,211 meters (7254 feet) high, nearby Mount Gede is 2,958 meters (9,705 feet) high. This is what may have happened,i saw a post on PPRN from another pilot saying ATC almost flew her into the same mountain. If you cross country ski, start with a small country. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11213272 United States 05/09/2012 01:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The most important thing I've seen posted in this thread is the fact the plane was only suppose to be about 50 minutes long, yet they say they lost contact with it after 1 1/2 hours so it was in the air 40 minutes longer than it was suppose to be at that point. Strange stuff. |

Strange stuff. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11213272 Yea, that was CRAZY indeed! Maybe thats where they got the idea it could have been hijacked. Anyway, for some reason they did NOT return to the airport at the time they were suppose to return and stayed in the air 40 minutes longer. Gotta be a reason. If mechanical problems..seems they would have at least been headed back to the airport. Apparently that wasn't the case. |
Freckles User ID: 689201 Puerto Rico 05/09/2012 01:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay this doesn't make sense either. Quoting: Freckles The plane ride was supposed to be over in less than an hour.. and yet 90 minutes later they lost contact with it. Hmmmmmm.
