I used to drive an early 80's VW diesel that was rated 40mpg. No computer, simple injection system.

70mpg cars are quite common here

Basic BMW diesel engines are capable of that
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 475310

But the gas is much more expensive, so i'm thinking there's no big difference (We're all equally fucked).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 428255

The big difference is the benefit to the environment, due to less fuel being burned. In the USA, they don't want us to have such technologies because it would actually HELP protect the environment. It's completely unacceptable that the US is still driving these inefficient cars, while the rest of the world has access to much higher standards! Bull shit! I'm so fed up with this crap!

a little off-topic but I thought I read somewhere that new technologies are not allowed to exceed 35% of the current EPA average MPG. this was brought up during the hydrogen car debate a few months ago.

does anyone remember hearing something along these lines?

Emission laws?
 Quoting: BRIEF

safety laws
continue adding weight as crash protection, crumple zones, side bars, etc and the cars get heavier

many countries do not hold our safety standards
and it makes us

That's not the point. Why aren't these cars available in the US?

Our high fuel prices are due to tax.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 475310

Can you not really figure it out?

Really? Really? Really?

It very simple.

Having such cars take money away from the Oil and Gas giants.

These same companies that are owned by politicians who then invent wars to further their profits.

Simple to understand.

There is technology was beyond this tech available. Has been for years.

Google the Tesla Model.

And the Austin Model.

Taxes on energy is just another method to extract wealth from the People.

Since the context of this thread in the US, the Government derives its power from the People.

Thus, any resources taken and used from the Geographic area of the United States of America, and not the United States, should be of the Public Trust.

Gaddafi had this mindset in Libya, in regards to the proceeds derived from Oil production.

Maybe that is another reason why ZATO took him out.

It's true. Emission rules in USA esp California are more strict than other countries that tend to ruin fuel efficiency.
 Quoting: AlcoholicRunner

Somehow this just seems backwards to me. Ya know?

You'd think if a car got 70mpg, rather than 28mpg, it would be less polluting. I just can't for the life of me understand the emission law thing when it comes to mpg.

I guess I'm brain dead blink
 Quoting: Éireann

It has to do with the chemistry...when HC, CO, CO2 and Nox come out of the engine as a result of combustion, the catalyst reaction turns them into CO2 and H2O with some O2 left over...see how simple that is? grinning
 Quoting: BRIEF

Well, yes, Brief. I know that part of how an engine works, but isn't it also true that to get the higher MPG what would have been exhaust is recycled back into the engine as fuel which means that there are less emissions?

Or am I totally missing it?

No, if you are thinking of a turbo, the spent gasses just run an air compressor to ram more air into each cylinder but you still end up with oxides of nitrogen (Nox) due to high compression...the only way to clean that up is with a catalytic converter...

It does not matter if you make a car that has 100 MPG. Stop wasting your time worrying about what other people have. If America allows a car that gets 100 mpg, America will just charge 20 dollars a gallon.

Folks,,, Simple,,, all the other parts of the world have found a happy balance between clean air and good mpg..

Our EPA,, went way beyond common sense and is the reason why our cars get 1/2 of what they could get.. After all if we used 1/2 the fuel where would the TAXes come from to fix the roads?????????

Its all a big game to dig deeper in our pockets..

Sodbust
 Quoting: Sodbust 15777811

Catalysts here in the US are "supposed" to help clean the environment but in my 2002 Monte Carlo the cat became so clogged at 100k miles that the mileage had dropped below 20 MPG. I "took" care of the issue and I'm getting over 34 MPG and the car is running better than it was when we got it with only 65k miles on it and the most we ever got in highway MPG's was 29.5.
So tell me the cat is cleaning the air while screwing up MPG's and ruining the engine by making it run hotter!
It runs hotter and causes the engine to wear faster and the oil won't last 2500 miles much less the 6000 they "suggest" you change it in!
Frackin EPA sucks IMO!
No catalysts overseas on their cars and they drive more than 60mph upwards of 100mph usually and their cars last much longer. Makes you wonder doesn't it?
