Imperial gallon is 1.21 US gallons. Im pretty sure that 44mpg VW would be rated at 53mpg in the UK. Also, the US semi fleet is 3x the size of Europe's. They use the diesel that in Europe would be used by cars. Europeans also use a manual transmission while people in the US go with automatics.

No American would spend 2500 dollars more for a smaller engine with less horsepower. So why even offer it.

Americans just arent that interested in MPG because if they were then small cars would be the majority of what you see on the road.

Can't squeeze 400+ HP out of some tiny rice burner piece of shit and still get high mileage...

In 1985 the Average Fuel Efficiency of US Passenger cars was 27.6mpg, in 2011 the average was 33.8. An outstanding 6.2mpg increase. In comparison look at any other technology out there. With the progression of computers one would think a vastly larger increase in fuel efficiency.

Our Gov does not want us to get good gas mileage. Less money in taxes and less money we are spending in gas and going to the gas station buying gas.

Less money for the oil companies and less money for the gas stores.

Our Gov passes new laws all the time to force us to spend money to comply with new legislation. For example here on the farm we now have to buy DOT tags for the trailor trucks, pick up trucks, trailors etc etc.. We cannot pull certain equipment now unless we install special breaks and hitches. We have spent thousands to comply with the new law here in Ky.




They do this all the time. We have a Gov that is doing everything possible to force you to have it as hard as possible. Poor people cannot afford high priced shit and rich people see it as no problem at all and it does not affect them in any way.

THE why is because THE USA wants to sell gallons and get those taxes,and more importantly ,The Oil Companies that run this Country won't allow it or any other competition to survive, such as electric,alcohol,hydrogen,etc. They are so Big They just simply buy them up and close them !

I checked the KIA Rio for the US and UK ..
The UK gets 88 mpg and the US gets 40 mpg.

You'd think if a car got 70mpg, rather than 28mpg, it would be less polluting. I just can't for the life of me understand the emission law thing when it comes to mpg.

22k dollars for a polo vs 9000 for a nissan versa. who in their right mind would spend 13k more adding 275 dollars/mo to the car payment to save 100/mo in fuel.

It has to do with the chemistry...when HC, CO, CO2 and Nox come out of the engine as a result of combustion, the catalyst reaction turns them into CO2 and H2O with some O2 left over...see how simple that is?
