No worries. We outnumber them by a longshot, not to mention most of the military wouldn't back the idea of enslaving the world.
 Quoting: S0L4RN1GHTM4R3

It would be quite easy to pass off a solar induced EMP as an EMP nuclear attack. With no internet or TV, the sheeple would rely on rumors.

And, in a strange coincidence, a significant radio personality was just talking about EMP attacks out of the blue, priming his listeners for such a possibility. Most of them would first think attack rather than solar event now that he has planted that idea.

If the people think it is an attack, the people would back up any military action.

I expect this latest volley of activity will be doomless, as in previous months. At least as far as grid and communications go.

I've a feeling these events affect people psychologically though, often to negative effect. Enhancing and fuelling bad events such as wars and the like.

Great thoughts from the two previous posters.

I, personally, feel this could produce a high enough X-class flare to do some real damage, just remember 1429, and 1476 dwarfs 1429 and it produced an X5.4.

I guess time will tell.

Stay tuned for an update.

EDIT

It already peaked, a small C-class.

Another intersting note, I witnessed "Venus" get really dim last night, for about a minute, and then it brightened back up, what seemed to be brighter than before. However, it could of just appeared to be brighter because of it dimming waaay down.

Thoughts?

CHANCE OF FLARES: Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing even stronger blasts. The sunspot's 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Eruptions in the days ahead will likely be geoeffective as the sunspot turns to face Earth.

And the solar winds are currently at 500+ km/s.

That pair of CMEs must be arriving.

For all the idiots who claim these flares can't touch us, let me remind you of one simple fact you all tend to forget:

Our magnetosphere is weakening more and more everyday.

It certainly can, and will if big enough, cause damage.
 Quoting: S0L4RN1GHTM4R3

I agree and after putting peak oil into the equation and economy I think you find us in a bad situation where maintenance of structures will occur less often due yo the lack of availability. Leaving us open for CMEs amongst other things

Anyone here have night sweats during solar flares? I am generally freezing all the time, but when solar activity is increased, I wake up sweating like hell at least 3 times a night.

I have a hypothetical question for anyone with amore knowledge than myself. Is it posible for an x5 or greater solarflare to 'peel' away part of venus's atmosphere and hurl it towards earth. If so, what kind of damage could we expect?

Interesting question.

Personally, I think it'd do more damage to venus than any possible outcome it would have for earth.

I mean, maybe if it were somehow disintigrated and hurled chunks of venus at us. Other than that, I don't think we'd have anything to worry about in those terms.

Here is an interesting thought as well.

I know some say Venus is so bright right now because of this "ribbon" we're going through, however, what if it were brighter because "something" is pulling it closer into the sun? Maybe something like another planet in our solar system?

SOLAR ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES: Huge sunspot AR1476 is crackling with M-class solar flares and appears to be on the verge of producing something even stronger. The sunspot's 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for X-class flares, the most powerful kind. Earth is entering the line of fire as the sunspot rotates across the face of the sun. Solar flare alerts: text, phone.

Earlier today, amateur astronomer Thomas Ashcraft of New Mexico detected strong shortwave radio bursts coming from the sunspot. Click to hear the "solar static" that roared out of his loudspeaker:

Dynamic spectrum courtesy of Wes Greenman, Alachua Radio Observatory

"The strongest burst so far occured around 1631 UT on May 9th," reports Ashcraft. "I am observing at 28 MHz and 21.1 MHz. As I send this note I am hearing more bursting, indicating powerful magnetic dynamism within active region 1476."

Solar radio bursts are caused by plasma instabilities that ripple through the sun's atmosphere in the aftermath of powerful flares. With AR1476 poised for more eruptions, this 'radio activity' is likely to continue for days. Stay tuned.
