Over 1,300 Tubes Damaged at Calif. Nuclear Plant from Mysterious "Vibration"
[link to abcnews.go.com]

"More than 1,300 tubes that carry radioactive water inside the San Onofre nuclear plant in Southern California are so damaged that they will be taken out of service, the utility that runs the plant said Tuesday."

"At issue has been the integrity of tubing that snakes through the plant's four steam generators, which were installed in a multimillion-dollar makeover in 2009 and 2010."

"The company is drafting a plan under which the reactors would run at reduced power, at least for several months, because engineers believe that will solve a problem with vibration that the company believes has been causing unusual wear in the alloy tubing."

BUT THEY STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT THE VIBRATION IS

"Activists viewed the new figures as another alarming sign following a tube break in January, which prompted Edison to shut down the Unit 3 reactor as a precaution. Traces of radiation escaped at the time, but officials said there was no danger to workers or neighbors.

Unit 2 was taken offline in January for routine maintenance, but investigators later confirmed accelerated wear on tubing in both units.

"It seems that these new steam generators are falling apart and Edison doesn't know why. It would be foolhardy to restart, even at reduced power, under the current circumstances," said Daniel Hirsch, a nuclear watchdog who lectures on nuclear policy at the University of California, Santa Cruz."

the weird thing about this story tho is that it comes accompanied with a video that announces "RADIATION FINALLY HUTS CALIFORNIA COAST"

the way they report this it makes one think that radiation is hitting california from fukashima for the very 1st time NOW.
i reloaded the page to see if the same video would again play and it did. i thought maybe the video was a mistake and something from long ago, but no, here it is, a video stating radiation is reaching california finally NOW from fukashima. telling everyoen not to go buy iodide pills and claiming there is none anyway, they are all sold out.

WEIRD.

Protesters call for shutdown of San Onofre nuclear plant

The protesters also called for the permanent decommissioning of the plant that sits just south of San Clemente.

Evelyn Treais receives a rose from a masked man named Mark. He prefered to keep his identity secret. They were at a "Shut Down San Onofre" rally at San Onofre State Beach south of San Clemente Sunday. Mark said he was doing "random acts of kindness" for people that support an issue "that is important to us all". The protestors were trying to raise awareness of safety issues at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and called for shutting it down.

The group wanted to "increase awareness of the worse nuclear plant in the country as far as safety is concerned," said Gene Stone of Residents Organized for a Safe Environment. "We just want people to wake up."
The idle plant has had a series of recent problems.

SONGS has the worst safety record of all the nuclear plant in the country. One major accident there will effect 8.6 million people that live within a50 mile radius.

I remember reading something about that situation. apparently during an engineered upgrade to the steam turbines more tubes were added to it to increase power. Somehow this led to an imbalance in the system that resulted in high vibration levels. The only recourse is total shutdown and reconfiguration which results in $$$$$$$ loss.

Re: Over 1,300 Tubes Damaged at Calif. Nuclear Plant from Mysterious "Vibration"
It was most likely a resonance frequency that was damaging the tubes.

*****

In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system to oscillate at a greater amplitude at some frequencies than at others. These are known as the system's resonance frequencies (or, erroneously, resonant frequencies). At these frequencies, even small periodic driving forces can produce large amplitude oscillations, because the system stores vibrational energy.

they shut it down because it is leaking radiation.

Many of the Radnet sites are staffed by volunteers. It does tend to have a bunch of sites at any one time that are not functioning--and the results for those sites will be "0" for counts. The other problem is that the filters don't get changed like they are supposed to be. This leads to higher and higher counts at that location--until the filter gets changed and it drops immediately back to normal. Falsely low counts have not been documented, to my knowledge. The volume of air that passes through the filters is about 60 cubic feet/hr.--about the amount of air a person would breathe in 3 days.

I have no link or any way of knowing if this is true or spin, but I heard this a few days ago on the local news: They said if there was a major grid failure over several states (due to earthquake, solar, etc) that they could not bring the grid back up without San Onofre. doom on.

I live in San Diego and have felt (what I perceived as) tremors or an extreme thickness of air here lately at times.
Almost like there are frequencies being passed through the air that are not conceivable by our human ears.

Would not be surprised if what I have been feeling are vibrations of sorts.
"People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? Merely vague concepts ... their "reality" may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?"
