Re: Advanced degenerative disk disease
I have a herniated disc and when I have a crisis this is what I do

Fish oil for inflamation
Turmeric for inflamation
Lots of water
I laid flat on a yoga mat on the floor
Get yourself a tempurpedic mattress
an inversion table or a nubex

Yoga

I have DDD. Do these things above. I've tried everything & steroid injections almost killed me. Do your research please. Commit to natural remedies.

I'm on turmeric, fish oil, Vit C....lots of supplements.

Stretch, and do not get surgery unless you have no other options. I've been through this.

Take care of your muscles too. Drs won't know how muscles affect the DDD pain, as well. Massage therapy is your best friend.

Does anyone else have this? I was diagnosed last month with degeneration in my cervical spine. They never checked the rest of my back. No MRI or anything. Today i'm having severe nerve pain above my lumbar. The doctor gave me flexerial and told me to take tylonal for pain.
I cant move with out crying. So found some lortab 10s laying around the home and popping a few beers with it. Why are doctors so crappy.

So if you have this as well what are some good back and ab exercises to add to my routine? I dont plan on exercising today. Not until the pinched nerve pain goes away.

Any other natural ways to heal this? I've took 3 HOT showers and had the heat pad on the area.

I dont understand why he did not xray the rest of my spine or look further into it. I told him the pain radiates from my neck, shoulders and middle spine most days. Or and he gave me diflonimac. All these seem to be like placebos or something. Not that I am addicted to pills. Id just rather not take something that does not work and add to the toxicity in my body.

I was wondering what some good herbs for pain and muscles might be. Tried and true. crytissue

You went to an MD instead of to a Chiropractor. I wish I could say that all Chiropractors are good, but you'll have to find one that works for you. They can work miracles. A regular MD will just give you drugs to mask the pain.

zyflamend is an herbal supplement designed to help manage inflammation. It has many of the herbal ingredients others have mentioned and has helped with my DDD pain. It seems only those of us who have experienced this agony first hand can truly understand, don't expect the sympathy you deserve!

Sleep, what ever will make you sleep. Sleep is the one thing that lets your spine relax and stretch on it's own. Is usally the only way to get over the pain. Then if after sleep you still are in a lot of pain, hosipital for a shot... is sometimes the best thing if it gets really bad... and the guy is right...no one has any idea the pain you can feel from this. tylonal is crap and bad for the liver.....

Several supplements might be useful in your unhappy situation:
selenium tablets, one 100 i.u. tablet a day.
boron tablets, one 4 mg tablet a day.
Tissuesalts,nr 2 calcium, 9 sodium phos in conjunction with 11(silica)
magnesium chloride for stronger adhesion within bonestructure.
Vitamine C in combi with E.
And ofcourse for cartilege renewal, glucosamine, chondroïtine, must be combined with msms, methylsulphonylmethane, a natural sulphuric compound, for better absorption and result.
For any of the above supplements, always combine with msm for best results.
Good luck with alleviating your disability OP !

A cold compress works well for things like this. Get some of those large leak proof plastic freezer bags. Fill them so when laid flat there is about 1/4 inch of water. Keep a few in the freezer and when your back flares up put the ice bag right next to the skin over the pain. Do not take pain killers routinely, but only during the most unbearable times.

Re: Advanced degenerative disk disease
i also have cdd-- (with arthritis as well) and i find that a mix of peppermint and lavender oil applied directly to my painful areas helps a lot, almost instant relief.

FYI:
Benefits of therapeutic grade essential oils:
(excerpted from the Essential Oils Desk Reference, 3rd edition)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) Essential Oil
Anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antiparasitic, antibacterial, gall bladder/digestive stimulant, pain-reliever, curbs appetite. Peppermint is also used for – rheumatism/arthritis, respiratory infections, cold sores, obesity, viral infections, fungal infctions/Candida, digestive problems, headaches, nausea, itchy skin, eczma, psoriasis, dermatitis, and back problems.

Peppermint’s Fragrant Influence:
Purifying and stimulating to the conscious mind. Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati found that inhaling therapeutic grade peppermint essential oil increased mental accuracy by 28%.

Alan Hirsch,MD, researched peppermint’s stimulation of the brain’s satiety center (ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus) to curb appetite.

When inhaled, peppermint improves/restores the sense of taste by stimulating the trigeminal nerve. The University of Kiel researchers found that peppermint blocked headache pain in a doubleblind placebo-controlled cross-over study.

hf

Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) Essential Oil
Antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, relaxant, anit-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on skin. Lavender is also used for – respiratory infections, high blood pressure, menstral problems/PMS, skin conditions (perinial repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring), burns, hair loss, insomnia, and nervous tension.

Lavender’s Fragrant Influence:
Calming, relaxing, and balancing, both physically and emotionally. University researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration. Diffused Lavender resulted n 20% fewer errors.

University of Miami researchers found that inhalation of Lavender essential oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation. Lavender also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance (Diego et al.. 1998). A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that Lavender essential oil reduced mental stress and increased alertness (Motomura et al.. 2001).

 Quoting: Sako

Ibuprofen works best for me.

Dr. said I would have less chance of walking after surgery than before so....

Enjoy the pain, sort of reminds you you are alive.

What did you want him to see, a broken back? Stop lifting weights, until your back completely heals. NO SURGERIES. They do not work, they only tell you this after the fact. The only time you should have surgery is if there is a danger of your back breaking. Surgery will NOT get rid of the pain. Repeat surgery will not get rid of the pain. Flexeral is nothing but a muscle relaxer. Take 4 200 mg Ibuprofen every 4 hours. And see how that works. I'd bet a buck the pain goes away.

What makes me an expert? My wife is a Quad caused by a doctor doing neck surgery on her, why - because of extreme pain, morphine worked just fine. But we are all assholes - why - because we don't want to get addicted to pain meds. Bullshit, it's all bullshit. We went to Stanford and talked with the best - the above is what he told us. NO SURGERY unless the back is unstable.

And stop with the herbal crap - if it worked on pain we would all know about it. It doesn't, it won't and if it does that mean you are are already healed. LEAVE YOUR BACK ALONG and it will heal itself.

Dont give up OP

I have struggled with lower back pain since 2008

Finally I seem to be getting somewhere with massage, osteopathy and paracetamol to help out with the pain when it gets bad
I was taking heavier drugs to cope

Re: Advanced degenerative disk disease
I have been dealing with degenerative disc in neck and lower back - 6 discs affected. I have been doing physical therapy at home (no therapist). I went once at 150 bucks, the therapist gave me all of the exercises I needed to do at home to recover and strengthen all of the affected areas. Really simple stuff too that really helps (adds oxygen, lubrication and blood flow). Google bridges, Knee to chest stretches, lower trunk rotation stretches, pelvic tilts, hamstring stretches (really works), and piriformis (supine). Also walking and biking, but the best thing I've found is walking in a pool or swimming. It's painful the first few times you do them, but after that each time gets better and the extra chemicals you get from the exercise gives you a high that lasts for at least an hour. Also Turmeric and curcumin (sp?) are great for this as well... hope you get to feeling better soon. Also on a side note, my husband suffers from the back pain but isn't a huge proponent of floor exercises, he more prefers running and weights (all are things that can exacerbate the pain. However, even though I don't smoke myself (I am apparently allergic to THC or any real high for that matter, I don't seem to tolerate the loopiness, a lil' weed never hurt anyone ;).
